great performance in Prague last night by the GMO of this song.... I wish big bands would get much more popular again, although with having the GMO concert attendance a yearly thing for me, I have noticed the crowds getting younger, so it is a good trend to see the younger generation appreciate the swinging big bands....
I'm sure they have heard before that this is 'too fast'........but.....they are doing it in THEIR STYLE!........So try get some sophisticated knowledge and gain some WISDOM at the same time...!
Many more years to you, but to your knowledge has thought been given to letting a trumpet soloist improvise around the Bunny Berigan solo idea in place of the trumpet section verbatim rendering (as is done with "Marie")? Younger folks than I are probably unfamiliar with Berigan's solos anyway. I say this BTW as one who believes Bunny was without parallel as a swing era trumpet soloist.
Larry O'Brien has been leading the Glenn Miller Band for 20 some years. Warren Covington taught him to play trombone, who also led the Tommy Dorsey Band in the 70's Close knit family of musicians.
Thanks for the video! I have many recordings of Sam with his own groups--none like this. What a great guy he was. In this case, the tempo is a little too fast, though.
I saw this band at the Astoria Finsbury Park in London in 1964. The only difference is that Charlie Shavers was featured on trumpet. The vocalists included Helen Forest and Ralph Brewster from the original Modernaires. Sam Donahue also played section trumpet.
WHAT A WONDERFUL IDEA! STUFFING STYROFOAM CUPS INTO THE MOUTH OF YOUR TROMBONE. NOW WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?

When I heard this, I could've sworn the solo was a theremin!

Funny, they need five trumpets for compensating the loss of the great Bunny Berigan who has played the original solo in 1937.
The very same session featured his most famous solo at "Marie".
Thanks for posting this interesting video.

I didn't realize that they took Bunny Berigans solo and harmonized it for the band.

Did I see Sam Donahue, a sax man, move into the trumpets to make 5 of them, for the Bunny Berigan passage?

A rather mechanical reinterpretation of TD's classic. They're rushing it and the 'bone solo lacks TD's velvety touch.

Yes, this is a tad too fast. But still worth hearing.

You're right! Not only too fast it doesn't swing like the other version. Sounds like they were not together, like a runaway train?

Still sellout crowds at the GMO gigs. The band sounds great and logging many, many miles a year. We remain the busiest Big Band around.
