Yes, it was STS-126. It was last November 14, 2008. I pretty sure it was because I was there. STS-123 was launched later. They don't always launch in number order.
I was on KSC near the VAB which is across the street from the VIP and press site. So that was close enough for me. You can't get any closer than that!
Thanks! The view was very close to the press and VIP site. We were directly across the street from them. The closest you can get to the launch is 3 miles away, and we were on KSC, so we had a pretty good view.
Thank you. I was fortunate enough to be there on business at KSC and stayed for a tour and was in the best place possible to view and record it. This is my first home video and I know it was shakey, but I think I got the best of the launch captured. I'll always have that to remember it by.
Thank you so much. It was actually my first time using a new video camera and I wished I had brought the tripod to keep it still. But I can't complain. It was awesome!
Amazing! One of the best launch videos I've seen. Esp. at 2:05
How do you find out about launch times, and can anyone go out there to watch? If I were to go to Florida for vacation, i'd love to time it with a launch because I've always wanted to see one live.
I work for NASA in Maryland and was down there for business. I had an awesome tour of the KSC facility that day and we were on Center near the Vehicle Assembly Building where they put the rocket boosters on it. The astronauts families and VIP's were sitting across the road from us. We were 3 miles away. This was one of the best days of my career working for NASA.

You're right. I found that out later. Though the hype at the time before this launch was that it was going to be the last one.

It was pretty loud and bright. We were as close as you could get which is 3 miles away. The VIP viewing stand was across the street from me.
