I am from Europe, i've endured 1 and 2 euro coins for ten years know and no, I haven't gotten over it, it still sucks. On another note, fertilizing economic groth via consumer spending is that every logic that got the world into the current crysis. Apparently our is already way too productive for it to be working out in the long run, we should not try to accelerate it further.
I agree on the pennys though, they really suck. Badly. Ever tried paying exactly 1.99$? Cashier wasn't happy.
In the Netherlands we have 5 euro coins AND 5 euro bills, but we can only use the coin in our own country and they're not accepted everywhere. But the coins are a LOT easier to pay with, because they don't rip apart so easy.
Omg if they got rid of the pennies I would be rich because they stop making copper Pennies so I started collecting them so oneday when they stop making pennies I can melt all the copper. 20 dollars of copper pennies is 60 dollars melted and craped for copper
i agree slightly with this, but how would you lug around $100 in coins? you could argue that we could just go digital and plastic only with our money.
The $1 and $2 coins are the best thing that ever happened to buskers! People don't think of them as real money, so they part with them readily. They look rather insignificant in the case, which can encourage sympathy coins, but they add up fast. As for the rest of it, dealing with anything smaller than a quarter after busking is a royal pain in the backside. The bank tellers dread my arrival to make deposits for the charities I play for.
It's also true that people like to "get rid of all this shrapnel" as they say when they pay in coinage at the supermarket. People Spend Coins. It's a fact.
If we didn't have the penny, then we would be forced to change the price of ALL GOODS AND SERVICES THAT DON'T END IN A ZERO OR FIVE. DO YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EVERY PRICE MUST END IN A ZERO OR A FIVE? ALL OF THE 99 CENT STORES WILL BE CLOSED DOWN!!!
@foodforthoughtFEAST Only if you only paid in cash. Things in NZ still cost like "9.99" or whatever, we just don't have a coin to represent that cent.
This gentleman is very annoying. I will never watch another of his videos. I don't hate him yet, even though he makes a bit of sense in a crazy USA. But I would explode if I watched another of his videos. Call me crazy if you will. PS: Make the $2 COIN larger than the $1 COIN. Unlike here in Australia.
I felt really scared when John told me to read The Great Gatsby, because I was assigned by English teacher to read the first 6 chapters by Wednesday...
As a Canadian the only time I have been inconvenienced, by our 1 and 2 dollar coins, was at strip clubs and tipping in the dominican republic. I get US 1 dollar bills for those things.
to bad dollar coins look very awesome but bills are more convenient.
i still want the pennies to stay as i collect them then change them for bills, every time i see them on the street i pick them and i become $0.01 richer.
however there no need to make pennies every year maybe every 2 years or something.
No, no, no, a million times, NO! I HATE coins, I never carry them unless I get change from buying something and they immediately leave my pockets the moment I arrive home. Once every one or two months I exchange those useless, heavy, noisy coins for light, portable, convenient bills. In fact, i would go as far as to say we need to replace those annoying coins with bills.
@nsaneone I like what you have to say. 1 cent paper bills sounds cool. And just think about it! No noise. But this discussion will go out the window in 2013 when inflation in the USA renders the $1 bill equal in value to todays 1 cent coin (Penny). But don't worry. Just go out now, convert all you wealth to 1 cent copper coins and in a few years you net real wealth will have tripled! PS: Triple means "times 3". I don't know what's wrong with just saying triple. Ok. I'll see you in a fortnight!
im a 15 year old living in the US and i now switch all my money to dollor coins when i get it for all the reasons you listed (the bankers hate me), plus it makes me feel a bit medieval which i love, and it looks awesome when i go to get some money and i whip out a chest with gold coins in it haha, its not inconvienienced cause i usually have a backpack on i can keep it in plus i use it for spending money on minor things, not like shoes or clothes or anythin over like 15 bucks...love your channel
I think all of nerdfightaria (over the age of 18) should come together and vote for John green to be president, if we do this country would be in a much better economic state and also, John green is awesome. DFTBA

this is so true! at work today, a customer GAVE me a one dollar coin because she "didn't want it." SHE GAVE A STRANGER A DOLLAR BECAUSE IT WAS IN COIN FORM. i won today. i won.
@KidGamerJoePWNS well when u spend them in stores, the stores deposit them into their banks then the gov't will take them away and replace them with coins
Meanwhile in Australia... we don't have pennies, and DO have $1 and $2 coins and have for quite a long time. We still have 5c coins, but I remember back in the day when you could actually buy something for only 5c so their use is not too far gone though ever using them in exact change is immensely rare and I have never done it as most prices are divisible by 10 (if rounded up because of the .99 thing)
My grandma saves pennies in two jars and last time she exchanged them in that machine at Publix and she got 30 bucks... they're kinda useful at being useless. Does that make sense? No? Okay, moving on!
Why don't you punch a hole threw your abe lincoln coin so that about half the material cost of each circulating coin goes down. the size of the hole would be large enough to account for a 85% percent point, difference in the value of the coin an equally big hole would be punched threw any larger unit of currency.

@namedropper101 John was referring to the dollar. In Canada, we have one and two dollar coins. However, we do have bills starting at $5. While this makes Canada progressive and awesome....we still have the penny -_-
When I was in Europe over the summer I was having trouble adjusting to using one and two dollar coins, so I asked people if they find it strange or if they are used to it. The general consensus was that they hated it because it is hard to find in your wallet among the other coins, and it also weighs more.
I live in Japan... Up to (almost) five dollars is in coin... I find myself using every coin I can... including the 1 yen coin... so... yeah... I like coins
Also: National Health insurance... but that is a different topic entirely
Here's an idea to replace the dollars: the government could harvest the zinc from the dead pennies, if you were to pay citizens 5 cents (and thus get more dimes going around) per penny that dates from 2006 and later, assuming each and every penny were to be sent away, there would still be a 40,000$ profit, and no worries when it comes to a lack of coin-dollars. (Are there any real flaws in this plan? (other than the huge scale and rounding up))
I like pennies, just random pennies alone after one school year made me over $60. But I also prefer coins because the whole bills-over-coins thing so . . . can pennies stay if we go dollar coins so I can have a win-win?
Julie and Martha? Thhe two girls who had the boys who were the little kids who put the cylindrical pegs into the circular holes that spawned the idea for The Existentially fraught free Throws Of augustus Waters
From someone who takes public transit a lot, dollar coins are amazing. As a Minnesotan I never knew the coins existed (ok I did but I only collected them), now as a Californian I love one dollar coins and I wish bills would go away!
As much as i hate pennies, they do make it easier to be a teenager when all you have to do to get food is snoop around the couch for an hour and wala, enough money for a corndog. Plus if you're under 20 they don't judge you.
You know if you probably spun the dollar coin thing in a way that makes it seem like the US is falling behind (ex: "Well Canada has had this "technology" for years...") there would be a push to accept it. Mental games could probably work on a mass scale of sorts. :x
You could really spin it several ways to get at all the political views. However, most importantly it is sad that we are wasting money when we have none to waste on something that could be easily fixed.
why not move from "paper" bills to plastic bills (like most other countries)
(and because Polymer banknotes are an Australian invention, are harder to counterfeit are more robust (not as long as coins but longer than "paper"), can better use a colour code to see the currency at a glance and CHEAP to print)
@Unknownboi88 That's because Gold & Silver are traded as commodities now, since we've been off the gold standard. The dollar used to be set by law as a specific weight in gold, if we went back on the gold standard, the value of the dollar would rise and fall with the price of gold vs. foreign currencies.
Another thing about bills versus coins. Consider those who are blind. There is no way for them to tell the difference between a 1 dollar bill and a 100 dollar bill, while by size as well as what is on them, those who are blind can determine coin values much easier. I am all for switching to coins and removing the penny from the equation due to costing more than a penny to make a penny.
I want to go to a system where our money is coins, not only because it is more efficient, but because I'd feel like a badass carrying around a bag of coins.
@DrJustinS It wouldn't be in a bag lol. This is 2012! It would be stored in wallets/pockets/grandmas little tiny coin pouch. A bag is historical now...
@h0le2222 A pouch is a bag. Just like a purse is a bag. Not to mention grocery bags are bags, but it wouldn't be very smart to put coins in there I'd wager. Same with Book bags and beach totes. In any case, bags aren't historical.
HOLY CRAP. My friend put a picture of her signed copy of your book on facebook the other day, and I was instantly jealous. Then I saw this. Not jealous anymore. <3
-The Kid Who Always Checks the John Green Books Out of the Library (Sorry about that...)
first of all WE DONT HAVE ANY GOLD TO BACK IT UP...why? ask the dumbasses who run fort knox yeah i said it fort knox...what about fort know you might ask lets see THERE IS NO GOLD IN FORT KNOX now you know where the main problem is.
It is quite unfortunate that the government will not implement any of these plans since the government is irrational and in fact seems to like spending money for no reason.
@nightflyer9kpoplove I was thinking this too. I had to look at the dates of the two videos. I definitely saw this one first. There is good reason for that. This one was made first. Both have the same message. If that increases the chance that death shall become friends with the penny (and other denomination of currency that must go) then re-post on. DFTBA <3
@lyricalpraise I really hope you didn't think that I was blaming him for using his information without giving him credit :( ! I was just hoping that people would be interested in the other video to strengthen a hate that we should all have. Glad to see that other people know the same awesome person as I do! DFTBA!
@nightflyer9kpoplove Ah, no, no, no, no, no... That is not it at all. I was -really- thinking of what you said. I think we are in agreement here. Dead economic parasite currency = Yes, please.

Imagine throwing doller coins at strippers instead of dollar bills ; p.. just a thought!!

Unknownboi88 1 month ago
@Unknownboi88 Why not just move back to gold & silver?
1978atcarroll 1 month ago
@1978atcarroll Because the weight of Gold or Silver in a coin would not equal the value of the coin.
Unknownboi88 1 month ago
@Unknownboi88 That's because Gold & Silver are traded as commodities now, since we've been off the gold standard. The dollar used to be set by law as a specific weight in gold, if we went back on the gold standard, the value of the dollar would rise and fall with the price of gold vs. foreign currencies.

I guess the problem arises from the influence of belief in ancient superstitions on the US education system

A bag is historical now...
h0le2222 1 month ago
@h0le2222 A pouch is a bag. Just like a purse is a bag. Not to mention grocery bags are bags, but it wouldn't be very smart to put coins in there I'd wager. Same with Book bags and beach totes. In any case, bags aren't historical.

DFTBA <3
