@matthijsken3011 Check out my other version of this same piece. My tempo is somewhat slower, and not as choppy. I also play the natural E chord as originally written by Chopin. Look for the notice captured on the video for the E natural chord.
Very Very good! I have to analyse this for my uni! And you helped a lot! Cheers! loads of other versions that I found in youtube don't have good dynamics etc! and some of 'em are played on electric piano! You can't hear the melody at all on an electric piano!
Very nice. Friend of mine was moving, sold me his upright grand. I'm a guitar player and knew some piano. Got the sheet music for Chopins prelude and Could it be Magic. Not being proficient reading muic, I meticulously put the letter beside each note. (helped me learn to read music). Then I could see what it was F, C#, etc. Made it easier at the time. After some serious time, learned to play song outright.. Just checking vids Thanks for yours. Your piano sounds great.
This is MY interpretation - and if you can read previous comments here, you'd understand. With vocabulary like yours, I'm surprised you can read music at all picklehead50
but.... is the sheet music of liszt la campanella overthere because you can really play that or is it just for fun?;-) and if you can, have you got a video of that?
I liked Barry Manilow back in the day, but now he's just stale. Given the choice between Could it be magic and the ORIGINAL Chopin prelude, I pick the latter each and every time :)
My goodness, you are so talented! It really makes me wish that I stayed with piano when I was little. Bravo! I know its a bit late, but thank you for uploading this!
I think he did some really good stuff, but I can see why you might not like him...some of the songs he did were really bad. He truly inspired me to learn piano with his interpretation of this Chopin classic.
I chose to play it that way ... to hear it as written, see my other version. There is some controversy as to whether Chopin approved of this particular way I play it here...who knows for sure? The other version is more correct and I play it better but on a not so beautifully sounding Yahama Grand.
FlyBoy, I really enjoyed your version because the tempo you chose seems to feel right to me, regardless if it's not what Chopin wrote down into the sheet music.
The sound on that piano was very rich and deep. The sound of a grand always gets to me. Very excellent performance, I just got the sheet music for that piece.
Very nice indeed and what an amazing sounding piano.
Re: the perceived lack of expression and excessive pedalling, I think the recording process is partly to blame, and I'm noticing this in many of the home recordings. It has to do with Automatic Gain Control - the recording device is constantly trying to maintain an "average" recording level, which removes a lot of the dynamics/expression. I think if you had used a more professional recording device the result would be quite different.
Playing was decent, but I'm gonna have to say that the song DEFINATELY sounds better, for some reason, because of the scotch(or what looks to be scotch) glass sitting there... Going through some rough times?
Playing was more than decent and the pianoforte itself sounds great! I don't get the point about how it sounds better due to the scotch glass being there...Jabbers, you may be the one going thru rough times...ease up on the liquor baby.
Hahaha, I'm not the one pounding on the minor chords, baby! You did well, though. People usually play songs better when they're going through some rough times.
We studied this in my music theory class today. The best part is the second phrase at 00:33. The bass just going down chromatically so smoothly, you can barely notice.
I notice you play an Eb on the fourth beat of measure 3. Some teachers say it should b an E-natural because of the E-natural on the second beat.
However, there is a story that one of Chopin's students played an E-natural like a good little boy, but Chopin stopped him and marked an Eb on the score.
So Chopin made a mistake. Too bad they didn't have Finale and Sibelius programs back then; he could have caught his mistake in the playback.
Largo and Lento are not only Tempo indications but also character indications: Largo is slowly and stately; Lento is slowly and dragging. The prelude has to flow slowly not hesitating but stately, solemn.
There's a time and place for it, surely. It'd be a better idea, if that's how you feel, to avoid all songs of melancholy outright rather than playing them at a more cheerful pace.
I don't have a problem with his interpretation of the piece, by the way, I'm just taking you up on your perspective on the video. I have a lot of respect for the musician, and don't mean any personal disrespect towards you either as it goes.
Fair enough, and thanks! I must say that it's a pleasure to be able to have a civilised exchange on YouTube. There's far too much hostility on this site and I sometimes have to stop myself from falling into that trap. We don't all have to agree in order for us to treat each other with respect, after all. Glad you enjoyed the performance.

Manilow ruined this for many at the time. Yes too fast but worse than that...you're playing the dotted quarter like a quarter...coming off of it waaaaaay too fast, and then the 16th is placed too soon because o that. Try holding the dotted quarter for the count and a half. You'll love it.
Manilow ruined it for many at the time. Also, you're coming off the dotted quarter note WAAAAY to early. You're playing it like a quarter note, and it doesn't allow that nicely placed 16th note where it belongs.
The tempo was half a beat off, the expression was not quite expressive as it is expressively recommended to express, and the pedal, OMFG the pedal, I mean what is he, using the pedal? I like fuller tones so I don't!
PEOPLE?!?! It's just a guy who posted his pretty good playing for us to listen to.
If any of you were actual experts you probably would not be posting on youtube.
I wouldn't necessarily say this was too fast, on the whole, although you start off fast at the beginning then slow down. But from the recording (which admittedly on YouTube isn't that clear) it sounds like you're holding the pedal too long and blurring the chords. When I play this piece, I like to put the pedal down within the chords to give them a fuller tone, then change the pedal as the chord changes.
ahhh beautiful i love it i sang this in my choir- it's called "December's Keep." When I sang it, there was a beginning like an introduction. Are you familiar with this? It always had in introduction little melody. Or is this a different version? Because everything is the same except the beginning
OK - I'll try it again without so much pedaling...you're correct about the PP on the last line, it obviously didn't manifest itself in this version of mine! Also, in response to so many others - the 12th quarter note IS played here as a minor C chord - a choice I prefer to Chopin's first (supposed) publishing of this piece. I've heard that he changed it to a C minor chord which in my opinion sounds better.
I used my digital Kodak EasyShare DX7590 camera and used the movie function...Voila! Actually, my piano has an incredible sound that makes up for the less-than-ideal audio feature of the camera.
Hello, Steve! Very nice. I like it. I did not know that Barry Manilow had been inspired by this piece, and composed "Could It Be Magic". I like Barry Manilow, too. Looking forward to watching another video of yours in the near future. Good-luck.
