There is no reason why those people couldn't have just stood back and taken all the pictures or video they wanted. If the officers were wrongfully arresting someone then you'd have all the evidence you'd need instead of a face full of tears.
I have been in the grips of ottawa police and let me tell you WOMEN don't go out to a bar by yourself you become the laughing stock of the entire bar and a very easy target especially to the cops
That is freekin awsome...I love it. Lets rush in on the police in the middle of an arrest then cry our eyes out, first from the pepper spray then from our broken hearts
Yeah he sure did, who knows if they were about to attack them or not, and the other guy was resisting. I'm going to school for Police Foundations soon, I can't wait haha.
I'm definitely not a fan of the "Ottawa Police Service," as I have found most of their officers to be poorly educated, prejudice and to be lacking in any real intelligence ... But I am in full agreement here ... You do not rush an officer and his partner while they are arresting a suspect ... That's Just "common sense!" Even prejudice "bullies" have a job to do!
Of course they got sprayed! They're lucky that's all they got! You don't get in the way of police trying to make an arrest. If you have a problem with it, go ahead and make a complaint, but if you get in the way you will be arrested. It's a matter of safety for the officers. They deal with dangerous people every day and they don't know what a bunch of people rushing towards their partners are capable of. If they don't protect each other, there will be nobody around to protect you.
You protect yourself by not doing stupid shit. We have to have someone enforce the laws and there are ways to voice your concerns. If you think that we should be abolishing the police, you're far too ignorant for me to change your mind. Go ahead and keep interfering with the police and see what happens.
@ai49 At no point did I say we should abolish the police, nor have I EVER interfered with the police. Where are you getting this from? You're basically arguing with yourself.
what it comes down to is protection. Protection of theofficer and the suspect. IDK but if I saw thre people running towards me while I'm trying to arrest someone who may be dangerous, I would react the same way. Next time stand back and let them do your job. They're lucky the cop didn't arrest t fohemr Willful Obstruction of a Police Officer
When the police are arresting a guy on the road and have their backs turned to the crowd and 3 or 4 people are running towards them, the officer did the right thing and sprayed them. Interferring with an arrest is an offence.
Yes, there was one person who threw a balloon full of paint at one of the arms fair shuttle busses. This was a stupid move on their part, but if this was why the police turned their weapons (pepper spray and batons) on the whole crowd, were they really justified in doing so?
Also, the paint thrower was the *only* person who was arrested at the demonstration. He was promptly released from police custody, I don't know if he was charged.
Impartial opinion is an oxymoron. Everyone has their biases. Mine are based on the previous actions by the police at this protest and relationships with some of the people who were attacked, a history of senseless confrontation with Ottawa police officers, and support for the cause being demonstrated that day.
In case anyone didn't know, the guy being chased and arrested, just threw two containers of paint at a bus. I know because I watched him do it and got hit with the paint, along with several other people.
I can see a lot of comments congratulating the police. This video is completely out of context, how can you draw any conclusion, from either side?
As someone who was there, I can say that NOBODY attempted to attack the police. The protesters were rushed by the police without warning. The man in the purple t-shirt was there as a bystander with a camera, doing absolutely nothing which could have been considered provocation.
Watch some of the other videos before you judge the officers' actions.
Of course no one did anything, they never do, it's always just the vicious police punishing the innocent as usual. So what were the three people running up behind the cops for? Oh nvm, it's probably for their autograph i'm sure but they just jumped the gun again as usual.
Well, I can assure you that neither of those two are stupid enough to attack a police officer. People had been sprayed and/or beaten prior to the incident depicted in this video, and chances are those people were rushing to help.
Again, this video doesn't show much, try to get some context of the incident before you judge anyone's actions.
Really? That's good to know, i'm sure the cops knew that they were safe too. It sure didn't look like they were good natured when they tried to run up on the cops back. So what help were they going to give? You still haven't said that yet and by the sounds of it you know them personally, so why tell others to not pick a side when clearly you are? Sounds like you're a hypocrit.
The bottom line is people could have filmed the entire thing rather than jump in if they felt it was an injustice.
Many people there had first aid kits, which have eyewash devices. Do the math.
Also, the police were assigned for crowd control; there were *a lot* more than two of them. At such a small demo, I highly doubt they were afraid of being jumped.
As for picking a side, like I said earlier, I was there.
I have my biases, but I can see this and analyze it in its proper context. All I am asking is for you gather enough data to properly analyze this (or any) situation before jumping to conclusions.
The vast majority of portable first aid kits do NOT come with eyewash devices. That alone tells me that "many" people had other intentions than a peaceful demonstration since I know Ottawa isn't known for it's windy, dusty environment.
Unless you were there as one of the people involved or holding the camera, you can't draw any better conclusion than anyone here since you would have likely not even have witnessed this enitre thing unfold from start to finish.
You're simply proving my point. Your opinions are just that based on your bias, not your ability to be impartial. Doesn't matter whether there was 2 cops and 2 demonstrators, the point here is that a hand full of people were ruining it for everyone there for a purpose. I would bet money cops did not outnumber the people. There are demonstrations in Ottawa weekly and this is not a common theme. Seems to me like you're getting your facts very mixed up. Preach on!
Looks to me that the guy is trying to fight or run away which he is obviously in the wrong, then the two cops have 3 people running up from behind that makes it 4 to 2.
Anyone with even some common sense could see that coming.
Don't like how the cops in Canada are, go visit the US and try that, or better yet, try that anywhere else and see what happens. People in Canada don't know how good they have it.
Looks like the cops did a great job. They succesfully arrested the accused person, ( who was running away) and they protected the officers from being attacked by the accused persons hooligan friends, who undoubtedly would have done everything in their power to have freed their lawfully arrested hooligan friend.
I wish I had cops kicking ass like that in my City.
To the A-holes trying to attack the officers for doing their jobs, that'll teach ya!!!!
bthomson100, i heard something about this attack by the police, but had not yet seen it. can you provide additional context for how this happened? i know i was walking the line across the driveway leading into CANSEC on the first morning and the cops already seemed to be itchin' for a rumble. is there any other video of this attack? can anyone get a slowed down version to get a clearer view?
Ummm, the cop was within reason for pepper spraying them. You have people rushing 2 officers from behind, it could have been taken that they were going to fight back. So the cop was just playing it safe and pepper spraying them, rather then have 2 officers get jumped.
Canuck12344, I rarely swear unless called for....ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!? You are one of the cops or someone who is uneducated in what and who can and is called for during a peaceful protest. Pardon me, were you there? Check out the other video's. These cops were brutal, and you could see it on their faces after, how wrong they knew they were. Self-defense my ass, No bus or any traffic is reason to hurt a human. The world is changing, cops certainly do not change the world...love them tho!!
cops who can't handle even couple of kids...
it's sad really.
