Robin Hood is not a coward, Prince John has decreed that if Sheriff Vaysey is killed, or anything happens to him, then Nottingham will be destroyed. So Robin has to protect him sort of. Though he can still tease him, taunt him, trick him and beat up Gisborne!
In Season 2's episode 'Walkabout' you will see that Nottingham is about to be destroyed, when the Sheriff disappears, and her ultimate fate rests on Guy and Robin... it doesn't look good!

I miss Roy. I miss his jokes. Dunno why, he was only in 4 episodes but he became such a good character to have in the show
