  • i know this may sound really stupid, but are the meat men there???? I hate them, but i'm getting anouther pony and i want a new forest, but if the meat men are there then i will come home with all of them because i dont want to see them beng sold for meat xxxxxxx :)

  • @Rainbowhoof

Sadly the meat men are there, I was speaking to our farrier and Longlat zoo buy them to feed to the lions and etc... its so sad

  • this makes me really sad for some reason it may be that the ponies are all cramped together i dunno :(

  • they make fab riding ponies i have a dun new forest but i didnt buy him from the sales. im going to go to the sales this year tho

  • i posted i comment a year ago saying i might of been getting a shetland there for my birthday :) jessforhobbit12, i did get a shetland, he was 1 yearling, he is now 3 and i have basically broken him in :') we also got a chestnut yearling there last year as he diddnt sell, his owner heard us talking about getting a chestnut and said we could have him as they would probally just take him back and shoot him :( he is really good now though! :) we go to every sale! :) its really nice for a day out!

  • I am going to the new forest sales next month because i have always wanted a pony and i thought that this would be a great way for me to learn more. i am soo excited! and i know its a lot of hard work but im ready for it! and as i am homeschooled i will have lots of time to spend with him/her... but i was just wondering what they are like and do they make good riding ponies because some people say they do and i hope they are right! so if you can tell me anything about them please do! thank you

  • @HorseCrazyy1000

Have a look at he New Forest Society Pony web site.

Tells you all you need to know!

Our Forester has been a joy to own - taught all my children to ride. She is now 13yrs old and we bought her from the sales as a foal.

  • @equusuk

ok thank you very much i will have a look at the website!

well thats nice to hear because i dpnt really want a pony that would be very difficult to handle but New Forests sounds ideal! thanks

  • @HorseCrazyy1000

they're amazing riding ponis. look anywhere for new forest ponies and almost everytime (apart from the odd few which will probably be stallions) they'll come up as gentle, easy goin, great jumpers and willing! thet's all you need in a horse and the few i havemet are all very loving. i hope this helps! :) and i hope you finally get the pony you want :)

  • i would just like to say that although ponies have been sold in the past for very little the average price over the last 5 or so years has been above 50 quid for foals and much more for fillys ... hardly any go for meat any more and the ones that do get shipped off to france are usually taken by a few well known dealers to riding establishments as the french quite rightly find the forest ponies fantastic riding ponies

  • the pony that went for £20 probably went for meat as many of them do

  • I bought my pony, Howen Milo at six months old, from the Beaulieu Road sales in December 2004. He cost me £56.70. He is the best £50 I have ever spent! I would strongly recommend anyone considering buying from this sale not just to do it because it's cheap... It s ALOT of hard work, you are buying a wild animal, and will put a lot of money into it over the years... BUT... they do make amazing riding ponies, and if you have the time and experience it can be a great project!

  • If you look at the other videos of mine you will see our forest pony.

She was bought from the sales in September 1997.

    Howen Abbey :)

  • @equusuk My pony was also bought from sales like this as i just discovered, hes called Howen Bright Lights :)

  • @RDrascle If you look at some of my other YT videos, you will see our New Forest Pony - Howen Abbey !

  • i might be getting a shetland there on thursday and next weeks is my b'day so it will be my b'day present :D

  • I loan a new forest pony who was sold as a foal and she's extremely happy, but she came away quite traumatized and the only way to get near her as a foal was when she got colic.

    She's now jumping 3ft 6 easily :)

So some go to loving homes:)

  • They Mainly go to the Meat trade. Few are sold as 'Pets' & 'riding horses'.

    =[

  • oh my god thats terrible!! Do they only sell foals? Does it hurt the horses? What are the people that buy them like?

  • The stickers are just a pain to get off!

The foals and ponies are sold at the sales at various times during the year.

Anyone can buy, prices can be as lot as £20. We bought our forest pony in 1997 and you can see her in some of the other videos.

Have a look at the new forest pony site for more information.

  • my mum went and there was a foal that went for about 12 pounds :/ lol

  • Aww in going there this june and hopefully might get one but really dont know. Poor darlings. Whats on their backs?

  • They are the auction 'lot' numbers, one on each side - so you can tell easily which one you are bidding on and which one you have bought.

They don't come off that easy either!

  • Is it too much to hope that they were all sold to kind loving homes and not the meat trade?
