I'm aware that Aretha's legacy is strongly tied to her 1960's Atlantic recordings. But it's her 1970's work that has always moved me the most intensely... musically, the textures musically/vocally just cocoon the soul when you need it... :)
The old recordings have slightly spoilt the quality of her singing and songs. If Ms Franklin was singing in 2010, the HD recording would enhance the musical background and her voice even more.
The 1970's singers had these disadvantages compared to the recordings of bad singers, no talent yakateehoo bla bla who have the technology and nothing else.
not to many people can touch a marvin gaye song but whenever she covers anyone song its like she just makes it her own!!! I always love from2:00-2:15 she just makes me want to scream and holla this woman voice is priceless sing it re re
@jay2luv, for sure she set the stage on fire. It would have been difficult for me to keep still were I at that concert. Bow down, I say, the Queen has arrived.
Anyone who ever decides to become a singer or even has to the nerve to vocalize publicly, should be required to listen to hours of Mahalia Jackson and Aretha Franklin. It is all about the presence of THE HOLY-SPIRIT!!!!
this is the wonderful thing about u tube...these youngans can get educated....can see real talent...real class....totally realness...like the lady says aint nuttin like da real thang....4 real
These soulful clips were filmed at the Royal Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in February, 1978. I was in the audience and can attest to the magic Aretha shared that night. There was a series of concerts filmed in this series with Dionne Warwick, Roberta Flack, Tom Jones, available on DVD, but the Aretha concert was never released for sale for some reason. This is actually a second try at the show as Aretha was ill and cut the first taping in the fall of 1977 short.
I remember this concert too because I was on the stage I was a backup dancer in Natural Woman (pretty sure) and maybe one or two other numbers (it was a long time ago). There was a television crew--yet it seems like the show never aired. My biggest memory of that trip was a rehearsal where she was sitting at the piano singing that Debby Boone song "You Light Up My Life"--I remember was thinking that recordings couldn't hold her voice. ps anyone have clips with the ballet dancers in them?
I can't help but shake during watching this video...I can only wonder what it would like to actually be there.

What a superb arrangement and execution of fabulous song.
My heart is heavy today after reading reports of Aretha Franklin having Pancreatic cancer. I hope that it is not true.

one thing i dont understand about Arethas career, why is there no concert video
ive seen several videos from this concert, they were obviously shot by a professional crew and edited.
so why not release it on dvd. or the one in Sweden. or Montreaux, or the special for Showtime/HBO?
i mean the Jonas Bros and Amy Winehouse have dvds, but not the greatest singer in history? what is the deal?
thanks for sharing
