  • Charles, I applaud the way you confidently flick the sheet of leaf around on the pad.

I would not even attempt to do this....!

  • @cyno3ure1 Thank you. Like anything, you get used to it after a while. It isn't as hard as it looks - once you know how to do it! :-)

  • with surface gold leaf it wont stick to the pad at all?

  • @chamoco1 No, the leaf doesn't stick to the pad unless there's something on the pad like a bit of oil from one's hands. It happens sometimes so you just need to degrease the pad from time to time with a bit of whiting (the calcium carbonate you use to make gesso). Sometimes static, such as from a room with strong electric heat, can cause the leaf to stick to the pad too. The majority of the time though it works just fine.

  • sir did you build the shield on did it come with the pad? thank you.

  • @chamoco1 Some pads come with the shield. They come both ways. They're parchment.

  • i just DESTROYED my first icon that I was trying to gild. It looks like it's been through a couple of wars or something :)

Gilding looks A LOT easier on youtube when others do it :)

  • Sorry to hear about your project. Yes, there is a learning curve. Using the traditional water gilding method which is the best approach to gilding icons or any wood object is a complicated process. My class is an intensive three days just to cover the elements that one needs to address. From there it's a lot of practice. But stay with it and don't get discouraged! Keep learning and trying. Find the meditative quality to it.

  • @firuinthehouse I've had my moments too, believe me! You just need to stick with it and keep at it. It helps to have someone teach you. Come to Seattle for a class!

  • @gilding All right, I'll just get my swimming gear and cross the Pacific, or whatever ocean(s) there may be, between Romania, Europe, and the fine city of Seattle :)

  • Very inspiring! Thank you! =)

  • Seconded. I find this quite interesting and would love to see more on the subject.

  • Thank you. I do plan to add more videos on various aspects of gilding. Stay tuned!

  • Thank you. I do hope to followup with more videos. A one person gilding operation keeps me very busy but I will try to do this and I appreciate your feedback!

  • Any chance of a part 2 ?

  • If you're interested in more information on gilding you may wish to read my blog, my website, and/or subscribe to my free online Gildingarts Newsletter which you can find the link for on the website. You'll need to google the gildingstudio website since it looks like websites can't be posted on youtube, but it's easy to find. Thank you for your interest. Hopefully I'll get more videos up before too long!

  • @Ordfruma937 I will be putting some more of these together. Forgive me for taking absolutely forever, but I hope to have more up in the coming year. Thank you for your interest :-).

  • @gilding No rush, Its only been a year :0)
