Mame can provide a good example of arcade games that required hard drives - there are numerous games that require roms and the CHD (compressed hard drive) file to run properly.
I believe CHD originally stood for compressed hard drive but now they say it stands for Compressed Hunks of Data since Laser Disc games and CD based games use them as well.

I used to run an arcade. Most of the time you don't have the luxury of the vhs tapes. So you have to call tech support.
