To all those watching this video; I have originally thought this was a great world comes to a end movie but now especially in this scene... The actor Fred Astarie is speaking deep truth prophetic words " peace be maitained by weapons no peoples would dare use " Hmm !! How the war on terror ? My cab driver from Eygpt tells , via family conversations he shares, the US is hated by many Middle Eastern citizens. What Do You Think ?
Hi Skendrii, the crew said in the movie they wanted to head back towards the States but as the radiation poisoning was already taking effect, it was doubtful if they would make it there
One question...at the very end, when the crew of the Sawfish said that they wanted "to go home" and the sub went under for one last time, were they headed back to their home port, or were they actually going to commit suicide somehow?
In the 1959 Movie, I believe Gregory Peck said something like "The men wanted to try to get back home." I take that to mean that they were going to see how far they could get before they were too sick to operate the vessel. Regardless of whether or not they made it back, they probably would have ended up committing suicide to escape their agony. In the original novel, they sunk the sub off the coast of Australia.
fifty years hence... and that stupid idea has worked pretty well... except for the terrorist nukes on the way... but they pale compared to full global nuclear war. Not sure it is proven that even that would cause what happened in this movie.I guess Putin wouldn't mind putting it to the test. But, yes, a great movie.. one of the best. Let's hope a nuclear weapon will never be exploded in anger..
the millions who havent died in a great war since... hmmmmmm Yes, nuclear neapons are hideous.. the Soviets started the arms race and the space race..They're done, but now the Genie is totally out of the bottle.. at least the terrorist nuke attack/s won't be as devastating as all out thermo nuclear war...
This movie was sooo good. Especially the three male leads. Fred Astaire was so good in the scene, and when I say scene I am including the bit before and after this clip here. And in the scene that he tells Anthony Perkins that he has no one and when Ava Gardner asks him if he's still in love with her and the final scene with him in it (I don't want to give it away). Wow, he was such an amzing actor.
This IS an excellent thought provoking film. I have to confess I usually give black and white films a miss but when this one started I was glued to the screen all the way.On The Beach has the darkest story I have ever seen and superb acting especially from Astaire whom I always thought couldn't do anything more than sing and dance a bit.Very convincing characters and ending
LOL back at ya x-* Just seen you're Youtube page.Wow,you ARE an Astaire fan.Always nice to see a youngster into the classics.Again with the not my bag but they are classics.Sorry about the *A bit* bit.Guess I was trying to quote the guy whom at the start of Astaire's career said "Cant act, cant sing, can dance a little" Was'nt he ever wrong.T T F N
Lol so true. I have quick passing obsessions. I have ACTUALLY moved on from Astaire :( and I'm on to the next celebrity personality, so I really need to edit my page, but there's still a place for him here in my heart. :)
What a shame you're going to start over. You really put some excellent work into you're Youtube page.May I suggest Ginger Rogers as your next choice(bit obvious but it would compliment Fred)If not Ginger how about legend screen Lee Marvin.Incidentally(correct me if I'm wrong)I'm surprised you dont have Paint Your Wagon as one of you're choices.Anyway I think I've taken up enough of you're time on this so good luck with your next choice
Lol. Thanks. I only go for guys though. (The basis for my obsessions is very shallow.) I have never seen Paint Your Wagon, I have only seen a few movies with Lee Marvin. And my current choice is not very internationally famous, is surprisingly alive and is Australian. Yay! Anyway, good luck with your future youtubing. :)
@MrMontyBurnsDog I just read your comment on this video; I agree. You may want to to watch the opening scenes of the updated movie called On The Beach Part 1. If the rest of the movie doesn,t meet expectations... at least the the begining should cause one to think. Whats to prevent a serious conflcation escaltion with China ? I thinks its possible but What are your thoughts ?

So I'm almost done reading the book, and is there anywhere to watch this online?
Because I'd like to watch it after I finish the book.

This was Fred Astaire's first dramatic role and I'm sorry that he had not done more. He was great!

With climate change on the horizon, the "how did this happen" dialogue throughout gave me goose-bumps (the bad kind) upon re-seeing this movie.
