1) Very stupid cooling, it could've been much smaller AND better cooled.
2) I find the necessity of two HDDs of the same capacity hard to believe (when you don't want to mirror them of course). Either mistake on the reviewer's end, or very stupid people work for Netgear.
I recently purchased a Stora MS2000 and I would not recommend it. The product needs improvements and accessing your network shares from OS X (Finder) and Windows OS (Windows Explorer) is frustrating. I have tried updating the Stora's firmware and have installed the latest (v2.5) Stora Desktop Applications for OS X and Windows and there were no performance improvements or enhancements to the Stora's tokenistic interface (accessed via web browser).
Am I to understand that you could remove the 1TB WD Hard drive and replace it so that both Drive Bays have 1 x 2TB hard drives so it would all up, have a capacity of 4TB? And that it does not have to be a RAID 1 so that 1 hard drive would have say music & photos, and the other video media files?
Hi have you had any problems uploading full movie files? Had a couple of files that just freeze at 25 and 50% another prob -said the upload was successful but not stored. Have you experienced this or know of this problem?

Thanks for this review - I haven't seen this device yet.
I'm wary of Netgear products.
I'm always surprised that these external hard drive enclosures never come with fans or a passive cooling system. They heat up quickly, and to high temps, and it wouldn't kill the company to throw in some cheat fans to circulate the air.
You mention as a negative that you need the disk to connect each PC to Stora.
I didn't. Once the box is installed on the network you don't need the disk anymore. You can map drives using windows or access it by just going to the mystora web site. Once it detects you are local to the box it reroutes you locally.

Why does it only allow drives of the same capacity? Is it for RAID? Does that mean you can't disable the RAID function and you can't use the drives individually?
if the disk in bay2 is used to mirror disk1, any extra capacity is wasted. However this unit will have JBOD functionality with the next firmware release in early April, this will allow you to put 2 drives of any capacity in Stora and see the total capacity as a single volume.
fucking awesome product and great review

Great review, thanks!
I used to have an ICY BOX NAS drive but the thing failed. :(
And it was near impossible to recover the data because it uses a horrible Linux filesystem.
I'm definitely thinking of buying this because I just need secure storage that works.
Please can u let me know if you've had any problems with the device? Thanks!
