oh man charlie chaplin himself.. good people die so early.. human life is too short.. so sad my heart is so sad that such an awesome comedian died so young at 88, well atleast he's immortal through vintage film. :)
hahahahhah xD I grew up watching charlie chaplin video cassettes cz my dad loved him xD and I am seriously ADDICTED to him!! he's the ONLY actor who made me pee my pants laughing (dont worry I was still very young when that happened) xD
Something that is a middle class guy who trying to surive in a system that wants to keep him down.. It would be nice to see if someone can come up with a modern version of Charlie Chaplin character today and make funny movies.. But I really doubt people want a new kind of Charlie Chaplin character in 2010.
Looking back at these Chaplin clips I am struck by his light-hearted view of so called 'morality'. Prison, stealing, drunkenness, drug taking, violence and general ridicule of the Police would - by today's standards - make him a social outcast - and yet he was, and is, our hero. Perhaps there is a lesson there for us and our all-pervasive but nonsensical idea of political correctness. Significantly, his attitude to women was gentlemanly and respectful.
@zthetha Well also bear in mind that 1916 is a world away from our "modern" times. The world has changed so much that its almost unimaginable how one could place themselves into that society in which social institutions did more to Mirror a Dickens novel than anything today. The Tramp was someone many if not most people could relate to in a country where child labor laws, fair wages, and the general welfare of citizens was second place to commerce and industry.
So You're saying that pretty much the whole world and the US people or citizens back 95 years ago could relate more to a Hobo or a Tramp than a normal middle class citizen.. Boy times do change... Today noone would relate to a Tramp unless they were a Tramp or Hobo themselves. There will never be another Charlie Chaplin nor a Tramp like him. LOL.
@WarshipAngelus No Im simply saying that it was a much harsher world then and that most people could relate more to the underdog that to the guys wearing monocles and top hats. The tramp was more like a Robin Hood type than anything else. Also bear in mind that being middle class when these films were made and being middle class today are two completely different things.
You have a point there... However if Charlie Chaplin was around today, He would be living in the Ghetto wearing a starter jacket and nike shoes and having a basket ball jersey shirt and he would be a drug dealer. Big different there. Today he wouldn't be a Robin Hood type character, he would be just a plan street thug.. That's why when I say the world's change alot in 95 years. I get what You're saying about underdog. But when people today thing of underdogs, they thnk of

Hehe the bit when he cries and wipes his eyes with his beard =D I love 'police' one of my faves after 'floorwalker' thats incredible lol. I love him x
sonnyboythethird: I spotted your great uncle Leo a few minutes ago in a clip from "Gold Diggers of 1935" as a "perfume-seller". Leo White, in case anyone doesn't know it, was one of the genuine pioneers of the industry. He did everything from slapstick to sophisticated. In "The Thin Man" he is the waiter serning cocktails to Myrna Loy. In later-years he was part of the "stock company" at Warner Bros. My grandfather and my dad both knew him out there. R.J.
Yeahh Ok, that's your great uncle "Leo" and, that's my son little Charlie Chaplin". Don't feel bad, I used to tell the kids in school that MY uncle was the person who held the string attached to the Lion's tail in the Wizard of Oz, in order to make his tail move.
That's my great uncle Leo White kicking Chaplin's backside twice - he plays both the fruit seller and the flop house proprietor. (And for good measure he puts in a third apearance later as one of the policemen.)
Wow, really? Thats incredible to have worked with such a legend and genuis, best he had a lot of laughs working with silly charlie hehe =D Love Charlie, can't fault any of his work, it's all so funny and clever! x
Yes, despite AxisGravity's sceptical comment, I am related, although I never actually knew him as he died before I was born. His first wife was actress Blanche White. She was much less prolific than Leo; I can trace only four quite obscure movies to her name. "Blanche" was originally Ethel McCann from Plumstead in South East London and her sister Ada was my gradnmother.
Wow, That is fascinating. I believe you. If one of my relatives was in chaplins movies I'd be on here watching. I don't think that some one would lie about something like that, your very lucky =) x

I think silent movies are some of the best films... so are colourless ones. They have much more of a story to them... though Star Wars is good!
