Even if there is/was no mercury in high fructose corn syrup... it's still not good for you. Humans weren't meant to eat such a concentrated form of fructose. Sucrose is glucose + fructose (so it has a lot of fructose too), but it's half glucose and the body responds metabolically to the mixture differently than massive amounts of dissolved fructose. Heavy metals or no heavy metals, sugar (esp. unrefined... brown/turbinado) is better for people than HFCS. Sugar taste better too.
It's a shame HFCS and aspertame have ruined people's lives. HFCS causes diabetes and aspertame causes insulin resistance to diabetics. If I want a good soda, I drink it with pure cane sugar. If I want some tea, I would use stevia. Sugar and stevia> HFCS and aspertame. Mercury sucks.

Where I live the sugar comes from sugar-beet. A very fine sugar without chemicals, processed by water and heat. I cant fancy why somebody tries to get sugar out of a plant which has a less sugar (10%) in it than sugar-beet (20%). Probably because the industry dont want to deal with more than one crop. Aspartame and Splenda are both horrible. I had anxiety attacks for years and couldn't figure out why. I stopped using artificial sweeteners and *poof* the panic attacks vanished overnight. The rest of my body is still recovering even after a year of not using that garbage.

(Hydrogenated oils fall into the realm of trans-fats.) Where I live the sugar comes from sugar-beet. A very fine sugar without chemicals, processed by water and heat. I cant fancy why somebody tries to get sugar out of a plant which has a less sugar (10%) in it than sugar-beet (20%). Probably because the industry dont want to deal with more than one crop. All connected to money anyway.

I also quit using sugar absolutely years ago after some of my relatives started developing Type 2 Diabetes. I am hypo-glycemic so my pancreas doesn't process sugar properly, instead over-produces insulin so a short while later I end up with low blood sugar. I was always told that to keep my blood sugar up I needed sugar. The opposite was actually true. :rollseyes"

Aspartame and Splenda are both horrible. I had anxiety attacks for years and couldn't figure out why. I stopped using artificial sweeteners and *poof* the panic attacks vanished overnight. The rest of my body is still recovering even after a year of not using that garbage.
Fluoride is a by-product of processing aluminum and a carcinogen. They couldn't figure out what to do with it so started putting it in toothpaste. Nice, huh?

Same thing with Margarine brah. Terrible stuff. I had an Email once that said that margarine shared 27 ingredients with paint, was 1 molecule away from plastic and had no nutritional benefits excwpt for the little that was added. And if you leave margarine nothing will eat it, no flies or anything. Not to sure how much of this information was true but it really makes you wonder about the stuff we trustingly eat.

@TheProlific1980: Most definitely! Totally avoid margarine, shortening, dairy product substitutes like whipped topping and artificial creamers--anything made from hydrogenated oils--very nasty stuff. (Hydrogenated oils fall into the realm of trans-fats.) Also, frying in vegetable, corn, canola oil and others is a super bad idea because the heat turns them into trans-fats which clog the arteries (contrary to popular belief it's trans-fats that clog arteries, not saturated fats).

@ mega. I don't think its the health care professionals fault. They have to follow the guide lines set forth by the government. If they don't follow the government rules they would be held responsible if the treatment they gave caused a health problem. I'm sure there are some health care workers who are concerned with our health and not just the money like the government. :)
