Can you tell me how you filled it and what the thickness of your glass is in top and bottom tank? I dont see any steel bracing on the high tank. Is this because the open bottom design generates less pressure??
Had no problem keeping 4 discus in a 35 gallon tank, each about 5 inches, the breeder that I got them from said he had never seen such vibrant color from ANY of his breeding pairs, all 4 were very friendly and kept in a close school, nearly rubbing each other at all times, heavy plant cover and meticulous water care are a MUST for keeping any discus. 30% water changes weekly, monthly full cleanings, over filtration, low tank pop. and a good 2-5 week cycling of your tank before putting fish in
@luattran93 maybe so. all i know is i wouldn't spend money on it haha. i like longer shallower tanks. i also have all mine fully planted and completely natural looking
i had a tank like this... very beautiful... had to get rid of the open bottom because my great danes kept drinking the water.. now got a plain old reg tank again :(
sure they can people say that you need a big ass tank for one fish....wtf is that i mean it can grow full size in a 55 gallon tank and i mean who are you to tell him that a fish wouldnt be happy i mean your not a fish
if you buy them small though, you should go barebottom so you can vaccum the bottom of the tank easily for better water quality. discus need amazing water quality or their growth will be stunted
the reason discus gets stunted are the lack of food when they are juveniles. they dont need amazing water quality,i change 80% of my water everyday and they survive.
@greatoutdoorsman2009 Actually you can't. Discus grow to 8 inches if they are well maintained not to mention the amount of waste they produce. If they are young 2 1/2-4 inch discus you may use it as a grow out but don't expect a 55 to be enough to house them for life.
simple concept!ever catched some drink in a straw by closing the top of it?theres a vacuum at the top of the tank.its just a tube, 180° turned.the "open bottom" is UNDER the waterlevel of the lower tank, pump out the air which is comprised->vacuum
nothing can happen till the water level sinks under the edge.then it crashs the vacuum and all of the water is floating out.effects serious damage to your flat and it highly probable kills the fishes.but thats just the worst case.hF by DIY,peace
Thank you for the info about "auqua lifter" as this is the first time someone has explained correctly to what has been puzzling for the longest time. So that means the amount of the air pumped in must equal to the amount pumped out to keep the water level in the tank balanced? If using two different pumps then it would be hard to control this flow of air ....right?
the pump on the top taking the air out could work faster and remove a bit of water. You just need to put the output hose in a place where it can drip back into the water supply.
You are awsome and it totally makes sence. Do you think this is how Freedomfish done his tanks? I would like to get my hand on one...if I can not get one from him then I will try to make me myself.
Fantastic looking tank. Looks like you have a great set up for your hobby. I also am into tropical fish at home but not Discus fish. Keep up the great work.
Speaking as an avid SCUBA Diver this was a really boring video. for future videos like this you should put a text warning on the screen, "WARNING- VIDEO MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS, DO NOT WATCH WHILE AWAKE!"
Love this tank! I've never seen this type of tank until I looked up some videos. It's beautiful! And I love the discus! They have to be one of the most beautiful freshwater fish out there!
This is a very interesting way to do Discus. Never thought - or even seen - a fish tank like this. My brother has a 100-gal (long) that we currently have 5 discus inside. Varying types. Some are Red turquoise snakeskin and others are Blue Diamonds. They have tetras and catfish as friends. It's winter here and one pair has decided that they want breed :) Beautiful fish! I have a 7 yr old Red Turqoise Snakeskin female myself.
I see two separate tanks. To me it looks like the tall is sitting in the low tank. There seems to be a blue band or mirror on the lower border of the tall tank.
Remember, Ox does not really get into the water from the bubbles, rather the bubbles only cause water movement along the top surface. CO2 and Ox are changed along this water surface.
Thats why it does not matter hoot if this is a closed air system or not, the air bubbles are only to cause water from the lower tank to move into the higher.
Ok, so here is an idea. The tower is sealed, u fill the lower tank until the water line hits the lower glass of the tower, then u start a normal air pump that was already inside the tower it the top inside, then u releaqse that air in the lower pond creating a vacuum tha raises the level.
This may sound stupid but could you satisfy my curiosity. When you add water into the higher fish tank, why does it not just raise the water level of the lower fish tank? I placed a plastic tower in a basin of water, I cut a hole in the bottom of the submerged tower. When I attempted to fill the tower with water, the lower tank just overflowed and the water would not stay in the tower.
I think there are some magnetic cleaners forthat purpose. I believe u put 1 inside, the other one out grabbing trough the glass and cleaning it on the inside. Howeevr i think water changes could be a problem
This tank is sealed at the top. Whether there is power or not, it will not affect the water in the tank. Unless air is released inside water level will stay.
Did you even watch the vid? There's air being released into the top of the tank constantly. He s obviously using a vacuum pump at the top to keep an underpressure.
When the power fails the water level will slowly go down by the way as the airbubbles fill up the top and the top is indeed closed so you dont get a sudden drop
Unles it isnt actually new air getting pumped inside. It could be the same air trapped in the top part of the tower (the one hidden by the upper frame) 1 little pump could be sending the air down in a closed sistem. How could they keep the high Ox water is another deal
i feel like the amount of oxygen in the water has to do with the ambient oxygen in the surrounding air, but with a closed circulation system like that it would definately not be replenished as with capturing air from the surrounding environment. With passive absorbtion and using plants to replenish it, the fish should probably be fine.
Yea, however i think that high oxygen lvl in water is related to the amount of surrounding air thats in contact with the surface on the water. In this particular fishtank, it seems for me that the water surface is insufficient to the purpose. It could be just me tough. :)
good call. more of the water is trapped and not exposed to the air immediately surrounding it.
it seems like the fish are living fine with that level of oxygen though. could it be that the fish have slow metabolism and therefor can tolerate low oxygen environments? I wonder this sometimes when i come home to my tank's temp being higher than normal...and how that affects algea growth, fish metabolism, etc.
As far as i know (by personal experience only) the higher the oxygen in the water (considering a proper filtration system in place of course)the happier and healthier the fish, hence my preocupation about this particular fish tank. Anyway, water temp and the Ox dissolved in it are closely related. To be honest, i dont know how much this affects fish, all i know its that some species react more to it than others
that is a good thing to know. ive been trying to keep my tank at a good temp level without thinking about the ox level in the water. is there a way to test this at home? or maybe calculate it? i have many fish types in my tank and i would love to keep a good ox level to help make them more comfortable. eitherway, i really appreciate and enjoy discussing this with you.
Same here :). Well, i dont know of a way to test Ox in home, however, i believe that with a good filtration and aireation system combined with a good water/air surface, a high oxygen in water is granted. I hope u enjoy this hobby as much as i do for many years more. Greetings from Mex.
Thank you for your concern. Yes oxygen will extinct very fast. As this is a closed system, air MUST be released into the tank to replenishe the lost oxygen. I have put up a video to show you how it is done.
I think AlanMolstad is giving the wrong information. My fish died when my airpunp stop working. Oxygen along the water surface is NOT sufficient to provide air for the fish when kept in the tank.
A full vacuum is supposed to lift "30 inches of water". That is why on refrigerarion guages a vacuum is displayed as o to 30 inches of vacuum. Your aquarium is 61cm. tall. I suppose, tho I have not teted to "destruction" 30* 2.54 = 76.2cm. Have you tested to "destruction". ie. make an aquarium 80cm. and see how far a full vacuum actually pulls the water.A 10cm.diameter column of water would be sufficient to test it.
