Dude, are you tone deaf or what. The singing is terribly out of tune. Its been know for some time that the singer uses voice enhancement in the studio and he just can't repoduce it live. Thats been the knock on these guys since they formed
Yeah but nowadays EVERY band uses voice enhancements in the studio. Some use it more than others of course but you would be hard pressed to find a band that would go in, tape it and NOT use voice enhancements. His voice isn't bad but there are definite flaws. Until you could sing better and you post a video, I think you should suck a lemon :)

1. After reading your ongoing argument on PAGE ONE, I checked out the past couple pages... do you realize you've been trying to argue your point for THREE MONTHS now? Get over yourself and get a LIFE. If you have nothing better to do than "intelligently criticize" a very good singer's technique and belligerantly put down anybody who defies your opinion, that is VERY sad. And isn't everyone entitled to an opinion anyway? Stop attacking people.
2. For those of us who have seen Stephen live, which it sounds like you haven't, he hits, consistently, most of the notes in the songs he sings. To an audience. Let me see you do that, please?
3. How many times have you tried to sing to an audience, without a microphone, over the volume of an acoustic guitar played so that it's audible to all? Even the best singers will discard technique so that they can be heard better by their audience, who are just happy to see them live.
4. Get some grammar lessons. You criticize people for making grammatical errors and typos on YOUTUBE, and then you go and you make many similar mistakes that make you sound just as "retarded". And by the way, if you were that educated, in any area of study, you wouldn't throw about distasteful labels such as that.
I suggest you might just want to drop this 3 month long argument you've been drawing out. Anberlin is amazing. Stop being envious of Stephen's voice and popularity.
And something I just thought of, watching this performance again...
You can have all the techniques you want, but if you suck at singing, no amount of training can make you sound decent. There are also many people who, with NO training at all, manage to sing quite beautifully. Are we to discredit their talent simply because their singing mechanisms don't satisfy a few? Give credit where its due. Like in math, you can solve problems multiple ways and still arrive at the same conclusion.
In my opinion, it sounds like he is sick. You can have all the technique you want, but if you have a sore voice then it is REALLY difficult to sing. You voice is actually a mustle that is developed. Just like any other mustle in your body, if it gets hurt it doesn't matter how much you can "body build" your mustle still isn't going to work to it's maximum capability. However, I do know that Anberlin Rocks not just because I am a fan, but because I have heard them live and they did really well!

not true. first its "muscle" not mustle... and your voice is not a muscle, your vocal fold are two flaps of tissues. the only muscle involved with singing is in using your diaphram. which has nothing to with a sore throat... and (once again ignorance of the subject prevails over logic) you can still sing on pitch without straining when your sick. you won't be as loud but you cords can still vibrate enough to match pitch. this guys is straining to make a sound because he isn't singing right.
1. singing isn't a subjective activity. its a pretty dang well understood physical process that doesn't require much interpretation. so yes if we are talking abut painting then you would be correct. however singing is limited to the constrains of the HUMAN BODY. there is no room to "create" a new way to sing...lol

3. the technical aspects of singing are still a part of the song itself. so choose to ignore it if you want...
the guy could use a singing lesson or two. watch his larynx (adams apple) move up and down, that means he uses the muscles in his neck to change pitch. he doesn't use any other register except chest. so to sing the high stuff he pushes, we call that "pulling chest".

lol. wow, im impressed you observed that when you lose your voice, there is difficulty making sound. however, do you know why your voice will weaken when sick? it comes from the phlegm (snot)causing too much friction and thus talking or singing with a laryngal resonation is difficult becuase your cords can't vibrate fast enough to resonated loudly without coming apart (resulting in a loss of sound), now if he sang with less force put on the cords and started resonating correctly...
and yes if his voice was entirely gone and he couldn't resonate, then he wouldn't be able to make a noise with his voice, now clearly he is making plenty of noise without controlling it because he is stressing his cords by requiring the volume of his voice to be dependent on his throat for resonation. instead of backing off and maintaining cords closure he doesn't. why? (ill give you a hint, its not because he likes sounding bad...)so here we are in the place we were and you still are clueless.

2. For those of us who have seen Stephen live, which it sounds like you haven't, he hits, consistently, most of the notes in the songs he sings. To an audience. Let me see you do that, please?
3. How many times have you tried to sing to an audience, without a microphone, over the volume of an acoustic guitar played so that it's audible to all? Even the best singers will discard technique so that they can be heard better by their audience, who are just happy to see them live.

And by the way, if you were that educated, in any area of study, you wouldn't throw about distasteful labels such as that.

You can have all the techniques you want, but if you suck at singing, no amount of training can make you sound decent. There are also many people who, with NO training at all, manage to sing quite beautifully. Are we to discredit their talent simply because their singing mechanisms don't satisfy a few? Give credit where its due. Like in math, you can solve problems multiple ways and still arrive at the same conclusion.

In my opinion, it sounds like he is sick. You can have all the technique you want, but if you have a sore voice then it is REALLY difficult to sing. You voice is actually a mustle that is developed. Just like any other mustle in your body, if it gets hurt it doesn't matter how much you can "body build" your mustle still isn't going to work to it's maximum capability. However, I do know that Anberlin Rocks not just because I am a fan, but because I have heard them live and they did really well!

not true. first its "muscle" not mustle... and your voice is not a muscle, your vocal fold are two flaps of tissues. the only muscle involved with singing is in using your diaphram. which has nothing to with a sore throat... and (once again ignorance of the subject prevails over logic) you can still sing on pitch without straining when your sick. you won't be as loud but you cords can still vibrate enough to match pitch. this guys is straining to make a sound because he isn't singing right.

1. singing isn't a subjective activity. its a pretty dang well understood physical process that doesn't require much interpretation. so yes if we are talking abut painting then you would be correct. however singing is limited to the constrains of the HUMAN BODY. there is no room to "create" a new way to sing...lol

the guy could use a singing lesson or two. watch his larynx (adams apple) move up and down, that means he uses the muscles in his neck to change pitch. he doesn't use any other register except chest. so to sing the high stuff he pushes, we call that "pulling chest".

Stephen has been classically trained, so I think he knows how to sing, and anyway, his voice has come on so much since this was taken, and to be honest, I regard him to be one of the best male vocalists on the planet, I have experienced him live, and up close, and I can tell you now, as a musician myself, he blew me away, his vocal strength is second to none. Look, I'm not looking to point out what he's doing wrong, its blatantly obvious, all I am saying is that the man can sing, regardless of his technique, I've heard him live, and he hits every note, pitch perfect (yes I do have perfect pitch). I don't have to 'validate' anything I say, because its my opinion, as is yours. However, I think you will find I have millions of Anberlin and Anchor & Braille fans behind me. Tell you what, you find me someone else that thinks he needs singing lessons

ok and now i know the whole story... and do you know why you made that comment? because you didn't know this piece of info... when you have connected all the registers and cordinated medial cord closure, you can STILL sing with out flipping into falsetto or pulling chest voice (which is what steven is doing in this vid). if he knew the correct way to sing, if wouldn't make a difference whether he was sick or not. and clearly, once again you didn't have any idea about that and made this comment..

so read this carefully... steven sounds bad because he is not singing correctly, im not sure how he usually sings but this performance suggests that this lack of technique is pretty consist with his voice.even if he is sick, he should be able to sing and at least match pitch without pulling chest voice or inducing some other laryngeal strain.

lol. wow, im impressed you observed that when you lose your voice, there is difficulty making sound. however, do you know why your voice will weaken when sick? it comes from the phlegm (snot)causing too much friction and thus talking or singing with a laryngal resonation is difficult becuase your cords can't vibrate fast enough to resonated loudly without coming apart (resulting in a loss of sound), now if he sang with less force put on the cords and started resonating correctly...

and yes if his voice was entirely gone and he couldn't resonate, then he wouldn't be able to make a noise with his voice, now clearly he is making plenty of noise without controlling it because he is stressing his cords by requiring the volume of his voice to be dependent on his throat for resonation. instead of backing off and maintaining cords closure he doesn't. why? (ill give you a hint, its not because he likes sounding bad...)so here we are in the place we were and you still are clueless.

so clearly you regcognized what is wrong. im not really sure if you did but ill point out the main problem, he doesn't change registers and therefore he strains for those high notes that should be sung in head voice. and changing registers is very important.and i expect the fans to back him up, hell im a big fan of anberlin, but this performance shines light on somethings that need to be improved, majorly if i want to find someone who agrees all i need is someone who is educated on the matter...
