i just got an idea using my 5 galon buckets that im going to stack on top of eachother, using the lid and cut a big hole so they will not go to far down on eachother and stack about 3 or 4 of them together.
Hey exiagundant you scared me for a second. I googled it they use the same material for waater pipes in houses.Im not worried. Ill let you know once I eat my tomatoes
@519mdot PVC is usually Drains and now PEX is being used for water. California claims that even PEX leach chemicals.... But with the majority of nutcases in this world you'll die from something else other than the chemicals
I went to website it was working fine. I bought one online today I can't wait Im so excited to start. I even called and they answered all my questions. This is such a cool product.
I agree this would be easy to make. In the past, with these sorts of methods, I have heard people say they had a hard time getting the water down to the bottom of the tube. But now I'm thinking you could run a drip system down the inside of the stick and then fill the soil in around it. Thanks for the inspiration John, I might put it on my experiment list and try it out sometime.
absolutely. Actually, I recommend growing a diversity of vegetables. You will get to see which ones grow best in your area and in the garden stick, and then adjust accordingly.
this seems well suited for balconies....could also be made more natural/rustic with wood.(or terracotta pipe).i may try that..if going over ground hte pvc could be sunken in to eliminate the pot...great for tight spaces ,like along a sidewalk or driveway..hmm...
neat idea, have wanted something like that for several years,,,,,, to add to this one,, instead of dirt or rock ballast, why not have base to hold your water and let it soak it up instead of soaking down, but might really have to try something like this, thanks for your work
How does one stop the soil from compacting toward the bottom? Is there a mesh system under each hole? or should I use a soil mixture of 25% compost, 25% peat and 50% packing peanuts?
Ideal but not practical.....Love your post any how keep them coming! ☺
I Love this idea. We grow a garden every year, but last year the Deer totally tore the garden up. Definately going to do a few of these this year :) By the way, thanks for the sizes and such.....Going to be making my own. Gotta love youtube, alot of great ppl showing great ideas.
hahahaha!!! the advertisement before the video (for me) was for some shitty pizza from some chain! that is the opposite of the messages in your videos. haha they don't get it;)
the growing stick is awesome the problem is people do something once and that why they end up in the trash but if people are anything like me there going to use this all year around to provide cheap food. thank u john for posting this and im using the same kind of idea with five gallon buckets and lids if u ask around u can even get buckets and lids for free.
I like that these can grow more in less space but I would not like them in an area that you are able to grow in the ground, the soils need to be enriched with lots of plant life. Hopefully these plastic products do not end up in a landfill. People need to think about renewable systems not systems that you have to take resources like water and nutrients or potting mixes because you are taking from the environment and not adding anything back. Perfection may be unrealistic but think before doing.
Hey John, do you know what's going on with the garden stick website? I keep getting a "This account has been suspended message- and I have double checked the spelling.
Hey John this is a Good episode, not just by showing it, but giving the Idea to many on building one, and Hey you should build one in one episode, also You Should make a Video on making Compost Tea.
It's just another garden novelty. If you were to buy all the crap he always shows you'd go broke. I like John's learning vids, hate the commercial hawking vids.
hah! that did sound funny/off-color right. i dont think he meant anything by it personally, but it totally reminded me of this dude from recent news. watch?v=uBZg3kdyWlg
50 bucks for just the 4 inch by 6 foot stick, and an extra 20 for the pot! Are they high?! And I don't mean high priced, I mean high on drugs. A 4 inch by 10 foot pvc pipe sells for 18 bucks at Home Depot. Cut it in half to have two 5 footers, drill your own holes, and save to bunch of money.
@phoggee what for 20 mins of putting uv treated pvc together and cut some holes then bury the bottom in the ground. Why garden if you don't want to spend time on it. Plus then you can say that your garden was built by you.
This is really cool! I'll have to tell my mother about this. She wants to have a garden, but I don't know if she's up for the weeding and stuff that comes with it. Thanks, John!!!
This is awesome stuff. Thanks for posting. You always post the greatest and most useful information. Can't wait until you have a show on Planet Green or DIY channel! ;-)

How much are they charging per pound of produce from this type of gardening? if it is more expensive, then we can't say it is more efficient.
but if it is less expensive, then this has some credibilty as an efficient method for gardeing.
