Thought this show was just a hallucination or perhaps a dream since nobody I ever asked could recall it or knew what the hell I was talking about. Glad to see I'm not as off as I thought.Whew!
I thought I had hallucinated this show, I've never met anyone that recalled any of the characters or Dr. Shrink and always tried to argue that I meant Herbie the Lovebug and Puff n Stuff.
Oh, God, what great memories. I always loved Wonderbug! Michael Lembeck has certainly made a success of himself. I really like Connie and Carla.. Anybody remember him on Happy Days as a gang leader?
Sid and Marty Krofft were freakin awesome! The filled our childhood with color, excitement, and wild stories!
I totally believed in Marshall, Will, and Holly. Pylons, Dinosaurs, and the Sleestack! -But then they had to throw in "Dopey" and giant strawberries. WTF?
This was filmed in Atlanta. The Kroffts had an indoor theme park located in what is now CNN Center, in downtown Atlanta. You can see it in the background when the band is singing. The highway that they are leading the crowd up is what eventually becam known as Freedom Parkway in Atlanta. It leads from downtown to the Jimmy Carter Library, passing by the MLK Jr. Historical sight along the way.
Hee.I was born in '67 and this show found its way onto Australian tv.I recently found my 10 yr old self's diary referring to this show, but I couldn't mentally conjure up the memory. Now it all comes back!
My ten year old seems to enjoy this stuff, especially after telling her this stuff is what I got to watch when I was HER age. I loved the first season Kaptain Kool and the Kongs.
I've been humming this tune for decades and wondered where it came from! I'd say my favorite part of this clip is the primitive Atlanta skyline in the background...dominated at the time by the Westin Peachtree hotel!
Does anyone remember a skit on one of the Krofft shows with a tarzan theme, I think he was called tongo or something like that. I am remembering it Banana Splits, Tongo would mess up and they would say hutt
I talk to Louise DuHart, sometimes on her facebook page. She still talks to Mickey McNeil (Turkey), who now runs three youth centers. With Mike Lembreck as a known director, he should use his influence and talk to the Krofft Brothers; about doing a "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs" reunion.
@14DaveHunter I would rather see a historical dramatization of the Krofft Era that showed you: how the shows were conceived and produced from the inside, how they affected actors careers, how ABC got so many years out of so few shows, etc.. Also, I think a documentary on the Hermine Midgets is long overdue. The Academy should give them a lifetime achievement award while there are still a few left alive to accept it.
@hoovertac I believe it was. The CNN center was originally built by the Kroffts to house their short-lived, indoor theme park. The park featured several levels of amusements based on the Krofft's tv shows. It went under in less than 8 months, not long after which the Kroffts sold the building and lot to Ted Turner. The history of how they negotiated with the city of Atlanta is very interestiing; you can find articles about it online.
Just for food for thought, why can't TVLand look into some kind of Saturday morning programming block devoted to all kids' shows from the 1960's, '70s, and beyond? Besides, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network (sans their sister network, Boomerang) are already way too busy hogging most of the network share for kids' TV and they really ought to seriously consider that for a whole new generation. It would be such a cool way for (now aging) baby boomers to connect with kids, grandkids.
@NeluThat70sKid ironically when Tv Land first started they used to have a program called "super retro vision saturdays but they stopped doing it after two i used to watch mighty mouse
Was not a fan of this show, but loved Debra Clinger as super chick...she later co-starred on the short lived American Girls series with Priscilla Barnes (CBS 1978) and the move
No kid looked forward to starting school in September, but these shows at least made the whole process not so bad. It was like getting a reward on Saturday morning for those long hard five days. I really do miss the 70s a lot.
@Attila709 If you don't count the fact, we had much more variety THEN, than compared to today, whether it was network (the Krofft shows, Banana Splits, Brady Kids, Scooby, Josie and the Pussycats) and educational (Schoolhouse Rock, CBS Children's Film Festival, ABC Weekend/Afterschool Specials, Villa Alegre, Big Blue Marble) ;) But today's TV network execs, just what are they thinking nowadays (besides "money talks" and "old school")?
70s TV/CARTOONS ROCKS, 70S TV/CARTOONS RULE TO THIS DAY
@NeluThat70sKid Yes, I agree with you. Todays generation just doesn't get it, and is in fact disrespectful. Thank god, though, people like you and I will never let those great times be forgotten. It really stinks getting older, but I'm still so happy to have been a kid in the 70s.
@Attila709 I agree with both you and NeluThat70sKid in thinking that kid shows today are nothing compared to back then. I got both of you beat, being a kid in the 60s. I would be in my middle/high school years but saturday morning was STILL something to look forward to for me. Growing older DOES suck, but as long as there are networks that will air some of the retro shows of the 50s/60s/and early 70s, I can deal with it as well. TV today on Saturday truly does suck.
@TheSV3 What can I say, except thank God for YouTube and the DVDs that already out on Amazon today, but jeers to TVLand who are already too busy cashing in on Sanford & Son, Andy Griffith, Good Times (which happens to be one of my all-time faves, not that I see anything wrong with the former two) but would rather pass on the more "realistic" shows like Room 222 (which, BTW, the 1st two seasons are out on DVD on Amazon and Shout Factory).
@Attila709 I agree with both of you. When TV shows were made for kids. Do you notice most of the kids seem to be fit and healthy. Even though most of us kids consumed sugared cereals, Tang, or Kool Aid watching these Saturday Morning TV shows, we had the enthusiasm to walk or bicycle to friends homes or the local movies in the afternoon after watching American Bandstand, Kasey Kasem's Top 40, or Soul Train. Wouldn't have missed growing up in the 70s for all the money in the world.
@Attila709 , I agree with you I enjoyed being a kid in the 70's and shows like this and others in the 70's brings back great memories. As you say today's kids just don't get it and are disrespectfull. the cartoons and education shows like SchoolHouse Rock, Electric Company are a lot better then the stuff kids watch today.
@Attila709 Oh please...where I can appreciate the nostalgia of the 70's and early 80's Saturday the tv programming. The fact is though that the 70's were absolutely the worst decade for fashion and unfortunately the writing was based on a group of flower children that did way too many narcotics... come off it, Kaptain Kool and the Kongs??? That is laughable Sid and Marty Kroft were great with Musical Variety shows, but failed miserably at creating scripts. I laugh at them not with them.
@PantsDestroyer , Kids don't care about good scripts and state of the art graphics ect when they watch cartoons or shows from Sid and Marty Krofft. they like it and enjoy it and entertained by it and that's all that matters only as you grow older does that other stuff become important. For those who grew up during the 70's. This at the time was concidered state of the art. We enjoyed theses shows and that's all that mattered.
@Attila709 Every generation thinks the next is worse. But to me it really is. Back in the 70's we valued our music & shows & anticipated them coming on. Not like today, kids have so many options & the click of a button that nothing is valued. I remember waiting for a record to come out & listening to it over & over w/ friends trying to understand the meaning. Same thing w/ tv shows. They were special because we only had 6 channels. Now tv, music & movies just grind them out as fast as they can.
@NeluThat70sKid I agree. In addition to your mentioned shows, I recall Grape Ape, Ultraman, Hong Kong Fuey, Roadrunner/ bugsbunny, JabberJaw, Speed Buggy, Tarzan of the Apes, Return to Planet of the Apes, Shazam, Isis, Ark II, Pink Panther, Mr. Magoo, Jason of Star command, Far Out Space Nuts, Herculoids, Justice League, Batman, Run Joe Run, Jetsons, Fat Albert, Harlem Globetrotters, Muhammad Ali, The Super Seven, Star Trek, Captain Caveman, Godzilla, Spiderwoman, and the Electric Company.
@NeluThat70sKid Hanna Barbara Thumb Up! Sid and Marty Kroft and Super show? Thumbs down, but still like William Shatners singing it's so bad it's good.
man this brings back the times...waking up early on saturday morning finding coke residue on the mirrored coffee table from mom and dads friday night party and some naked coke whore passed out on the orange shag carpet...scrap'n the coke up and having my own party...just me, the coke residue, the coke whore and kroft superstars....
I remembered looking @ this every saturday morning. My boy flatfoot is still the pimp! For those of you not born in the 70's, you missed a helluva trip w/o drugs! Between this and Filmation shows kids in the hood had to go w/ the bling!
always cracks me up to see Diedre Hall as Electro Woman!! i first saw her as Marlena on Days of our Lives, and found out years later that she played on this show when i was a little kiddo! hahaha glad you've posted these vids cuz i had thought they were lost forever. :-)
Ok, when Turkey, Flatbush, and Superchick walked out from behind that curtain, it dusted off some memories. I haven't laughed this hard in months! And if you think those are costumes, they are really just an overly exaggerated expression of the way some folks dressed back then. For the most part, the only real difference in the attire and the hairstyles are the bright colors. This was a fun afternoon show that got the kids off the bus and checked in at the house.
@rjpcambridge i don't see it as negative at all. whatever it was that they were doing, they created an amazing childrens' show. heck, look at Scooby Doo... Scooby and Shaggy were always seeing strange things, and always had the munchies (prolly cuz of all those scooby snacks... what was in those things?) ya gotta wonder what the writers were smokin as they brainstormed! LOL
Man, Between this stuff on TV and the super sugary cereals we ate, no wonder a lot of us came out screwed up LOL. JK. Great times being a little kid in the 70s. I used to watch this on ABC (Channel 6 in Philly) when this stuff was new.
He OUGHTA sound like he's from Brooklyn... He's really none other than MICHAEL LEMBECK, son of HARVEY LEMBECK, aka Erich Von Zipper, leader of the Rats biker gang, in the 60's BEACH PARTY movies, with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Aye, Von Zipper Jr.! Now that's cool!!
(posted this somewhere else on Accident) But My Brothers and i loved these old shows.. and we live in Atlanta. Its Funny Seeing it from the 70's!. Thats what is in the Background btw, and used to be the "Krofft Museum" in a Place called the Omni Hotel that is now the CNN Center. ... and infact the Museum you can see in the background of the band where there is a Sign of "The Krofft Super Show".. That is now the CNN Main Headquarters/Studio :)
This is a long time ago on saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. with a big bowl of Boo Berry haha.Hard to believe it's 40 year's ago since the debut of the Krofft show's.Land of the lost was their best and next was Sigmund as far as viewer's but Far out space nut's and lost saucer were pretty good but the bugaloo's always sucked;can anyone tell me why Sid and Marty would opt for English actor's and actresses?
@laronmaron98 , I'm sorry you made a slight mistake..... Dyna girl was played by actress Judy Strangis and ElectraWoman was played by Actress Deidre Hall.
Wow.....my all time favorite Saturday Morning show!!! I was nuts for this. When the show ended every Sat. the countdown was on until the next weekend. I wish they would release this on DVD. Alot of the other Krofft shows have been released, and I'm sure it would be a big seller. Thanks for the memories. Takes me back to a simpler time.
I loved this show, period. Brings back such great memories. I always wondered what skyline was being shown (learned later it was Atlanta) at the beginning. And I LOVE Michael Lembeck's accent! Deidre Hall has sure come a long ways--from ElectraWoman to Days of Our Lives!! :)
I remember after this show was on it was time to go outside and play because American Band Stand and the Soul Train came on and us "kids" didn't care about that sort of stuff back then !
to Nacho66: shut up; you are so cynical; this is a fun and happy show; you are so miserable; you want everyone else to be miserable; too; so go get a life!
That's right--The Omni! I saw Prince there in the 80's. Notice the Peachtree Westin hotel all alone--now encircled by buildings. Thanks for posting this--takes me back.
I remember this - and it's cool now - but back then when this came out I was a kid who just became fascinated with the NFL and Saturday cartoons were beginning to go downhill. I watched a few of these before spending saturdays playing street football.
love it..big foot and wild boy..diedre hall as electra woman..spunk a+...love the kongs..wish i was one of them....happy tv that isnt around anymore..thank u sid and marty
I might be wrong, but weren't Kaptain Kool and the Kongs kind of a rock band on the very first season of Krofft Supershow, but then turned into a disco band when that craze hit full steam?
Kaptain Kool was supposed to be cashing in on the Fonzie (Happy Days) craze of the early 70's. And the band was a mix of the styles of the time (KISS, Queen, Ziggy Stardust, etc). But yes, they took a terribly disco turn soon thereafter.
In 1st grade we played Truth or Dare, and my "Truth" was admitting that I liked Superchick. The other kids laughed, but I was like, "Why would I be embarrassed about that? She's a fox!"
I thought "Kaptain Kool and the Kongs" had a character named "Chicken" ??? why does one of those guys remind me of John Travolta? where is the song Kaptain Kool and the Kongs?

LOL

wdh4721,
Dyna Girl was played by an actress named Debra Clinger...not Winger. Big difference, apparently.

@laronmaron98 , I'm sorry you made a slight mistake..... Dyna girl was played by actress Judy Strangis and ElectraWoman was played by Actress Deidre Hall.

For a great movie that has a beautiful Debra Clinger(Superchic) in it, do a search for Moonlight Madness also starring a young Michael J Fox

This has got to be - to this day - my all-time favourite TV theme.
I loved the first season Captin Kool and the Kongs with their makeup.
I just got an email yesterday from David Levy - "Barrye" of Wonderbug.

I might be wrong, but weren't Kaptain Kool and the Kongs kind of a rock band on the very first season of Krofft Supershow, but then turned into a disco band when that craze hit full steam?
testodude 1 year ago
Kaptain Kool was supposed to be cashing in on the Fonzie (Happy Days) craze of the early 70's. And the band was a mix of the styles of the time (KISS, Queen, Ziggy Stardust, etc). But yes, they took a terribly disco turn soon thereafter.
