I really appreciate that you have spent the time to share such technical and concise instruction here for free. It is very refreshing amidst the usual bullshit we see on youtube. Thanks Coach.
I was told to have your fist facing your face if you were throwing the hook without gloves in a street brawl because the bones are in a stronger position.
@muclesmarinara Yeah, wouldn't disagree as I'm not sure on the biomechanics. This is intended to be the most powerful of the hooks. The mid-range left hook lands palm down because of the rules in the amateurs (if the arm is parallel to the ground, the the shot must land palm down otherwise it's classed as a slap.
@myboxingcoach Oh I didn't know that. The Amateurs have many strange rules huh? Well anyway, you make great videos and they are good for someone like me to use as reference material.
I really really love your videos~ I've taken boxing in my highschool years, but I never pursued it. But I love learning this again to keep in shape and so on~ so I thank you sir for taking the time to make these videos so precise and down to earth. Take care!
@myboxingcoach Hey coach, great stuff here! But I was told that to throw a powerful hook your palm should be facing you(your face) because you use up all the muscles in your biceps and pecs more. I was wondering if there's is anything wrong with that.
@boardmafia With this shot the palm does face towards you, and yes, there's more power generated. However, in amateur boxing, if your forearm is parallel to the ground then the shot must land palm down otherwise the referee will issue a warning for 'slapping'
hey im having trouble throwing this punch can u really explain 2 me in full description how to turn your body as im having trouble conducting this punch effectively
@nickkapsss19 Hey man. Err, no. There are 3 uppercut vids on the site. Don't worry though, it's a fairly common mistake to make. For an uppercut to be an uppercut, it must land vertically (in order to 'split' the guard.) this shot lands at a 45 degree angle, which makes it a hook.
As I said though, it's quite common to mistake the two.
@myboxingcoach yeah that actually makes sense, i guess i was just always taught my hooks to be parallel to the ground but you definitely are right. I'll keep this in miind because when i first made that comment i have only been training for only a couple months =]
@nickkapsss19 Hey there, thanks for getting back. The mid and long range left hook are thrown with the forearm parallel to the ground and the palm facing down on impact. This is for a few reasons, with the main one being that in the amateurs if a shot lands with the forearm parallel and the palm facing you (and not down), this will be classified as a foul punch by the ref (a slap.) There is a vid on the mid-range hook, so might be worth checking that out. thanks again!
keep posting videos great

Why is it more commonly taught to rotate hips 1st directly (using gluteus maximus) ? (So just pivot on the lead foot without pushing off it)
Why do you teach to push off from the front foot with quads and calves to rotate hips 2nd?
Is that just me or do you teach it very differently most? and very differently to how most boxers box?
I prefer your way Im just curious!??
