Yes, plenty of people that supported Reagan (and even Bush) now support Obama. Nothing wrong with that, particularly for moderate swing voters. But...Huffington was a conservative, and is not just a moderate supporting BO, but an active Bush/Rep basher. The best comparison I can think of is David Horowitz. He was not just a liberal in the 60s, but a communist too. He became a a neo-con in the late 70s and his attacks on the Left are vicious.

I was OK with neo-con philosophy (anti-communist, pro market economy) until '03 when they decided we should spread democracy through force, starting with iraq; I suspect they're more concerned about israel than the US. But you gotta understand, the thing that distinguishes new cons from regular conservatives IS the whole foreign policy thing. A traditional conservative is someone like Pat Buchanan, who's such an isolationist that he thinks our involvement in WWII was a bad idea (the first people to be in favor of that war were liberals). That's the main difference...the belief that the United States should use military power to spread democracy and capitalism.

A true conservative Republican would not even think about encroaching on liberties and values outside of officially mandated Constitutional Federal responsibilties. These do NOT involve social or cultural (including religion and other cults) practices. Under Bill Clinton, the S&P 500 soared 210%. Since George Bush took office, the S&P 500 has gained 3%. That is not 3% per year. That is 3% over the entire 7+ years.

We cannot afford another four years of George Bush economics under John McCain.

The S&P's undelying asset is the US Dollar. Under Clinton, the Dollar rose about 15% against other world currencies. So add the 15% to the S&P's performance. Under Bush, the US Dollar has fallen almost 40%. Which means the actual value of the S&P has declined 40% under Bush. It will have to rally 60% to get where it was when Clinton handed over the keys. I'm not too optimistic.

When you cite the decline in the dollar, you should also explain that the trade deficit has doubled during that same time. Republicans will always claim that a weak dollar is good because it makes our goods and services more attractive to foreigners. The fact that the trade deficit has doubled puts the lie to that claim.
