I'll read another Magic novel when it comes in a Fat Pack, like it SHOULD. While I've not bothered to read Beyer's work (for that reason), everyone else's responses make me feel I would cling to the writings of McGough and Herndon.
While the attempt was nobel, the editor at WotC should be fired for letting this drivel get published. Beyer simply cannot write. The mini-chapter format sucked, poor character development and just generally bad dialogue made this one of the worst Magic books to date.
One of the best planes WotC has come up with in years, some of the best characters (Bolas, Sarken Vol) and he couldn't even make it worth reading.
Pretending to be caught in the middle of a conversation by a cameraman?
/facepalm
Its official, MtG's target market is 9-year-old kids.
Unfortunately for WotC, 1-novel-per-block fails, there's just enough room to develop everything that happens in the block, and whatever depth the set develops the novel failed to grasp it.
I'm glad Doug mentioned Sarkhan's meeting with Bolas, it was something I was expecting since the set came out.
I'm reading this book now. It's boring, unoriginal, and has the worst dialogue I've encountered. "Let's bring the pain!" The days of good Magic books like the aforementioned Artifacts Cycle and Ice Age Cycle are finished. Save your money for something worthwhile, like Agents of Artifice or the upcoming Artifacts Cycle Omnibuses.
dude, I just looked to see what Artifact Cycle Omnibuses is and I'm disgusted. Its just The Thran, and The Brothers War in one book.
how cheap can they get? I thought this was going to be the Brothers war, but either redone, or from an everyday soilders perspective. I know its been a while since the book was released, but come on.
Calm down. Newer players like myself never got a chance to buy those novels, so I'm totally happy with this re-release. I only hope, they'll be released in Europe, so I can buy 'em...
As someone who reads the majority of the MTG novels, I'm excited to read this one. I'm hoping that since they chose to put 3 books in 1 that the chaff has been dumped, making for a more compelling storyline (sometimes the old stories were a bit too drawn-out).
Right now I'm reading Agents of Artifice and so far I'm liking it a lot.
For anyone interested in the MTG storyline, I HIGHLY recommend the Artifacts Cycle Omnibus (release date: 6/2). These & Ice Age Cycle are IMO the best MTG stories.
yes, but did you ever get ahold of the old novels way back in 94? those were one book, and they dragged until the end and then they rushed it. Not to mention the story lines felt like the Conan story told over and over again.
Artifacts Cycle Omnibus? sat what? I've read the old artifact cycle, what is this?
The earliest MTG novel I read was The Rath Cycle Anthology; I never read the earlier ones.
The Artifacts Cycle Omnibus I mentioned collects the first part of the Artifacts Cycle (The Thran, The Brothers War). The second Omnibus was released recently and includes the rest of the artifacts cycle (Planeswalker, Bloodlines, Time Streams).
terrible opening bit, having someone who hasn't written a novel before do it even if he's the flavor text maestro makes me even more bitter that they are not including the books in fat packs anymore. I am still bitter over not being able to get the promo jace card and all the other special limited edition items that they make impossible to obtain, however i know this is not the forum for that. I will likely get the book in paperback because I like the central characters they have chosen. Rafiqx4
Agreed. It's good that their farming their work out to someone other than Scott McGough and Cory Herndon, and I've heard nothing but good things about Ari Marnell's Agents of Artifice. But this book is written by someone with absolutely no literary experience and it shows.
Yes, Doug does look a bit nervous. It's his first time (as far as I know) after all.
And I too love his column, but I think he should write even more on flavor, and barely mention the cards. Something more like what Matt did. It was more flavor-ish, I think.
And I'm totally gonna buy this book, along with Agents of Artifice, if they hit stores in Brazil...
i read the book and i liked it a lot good job

yeah, I don't know about that. All I can say is, with the newer novels like Timespiral and Lorwyn, your going to be very disapointed.

Nope. WotC only releases them to American book stores now. You'd have to buy it online.

They're releasing another Artifact Cycle Ominbus that has the last three books in it--Planeswalker, Time Streams, and Bloodlines.

That always makes me nervous when they get someone who's never written a novel to write the next book.
I said a few months ago that they find the cheapest means of finding new authors. Well, I think they just proved my point.
