This will not only cut their costs, but also cut employees' costs of commuting, and be a green-friendly way of maintaining or even creating jobs. Telecommuting jobs should be a part of the solution. Government itself could implement the telecommuting solution in many departments, and we have the technology to eliminate all those face-to-face meetings around the world via teleconferencing.

This was a great speech especially towards the end. The speech really picked up momentum during the end. Obama is at his best when he's arguing how we need to move foreward instead of accepting the status quo. That's when his speeches really start to hit home and strike a chord with people.

Someone explain this to me: how the hell does a corporation benefit from giving a $20,000,000 bonus to a CEO? Why not use that money to hire workers & increase productivity?! Why not use that money for advertising or research & development?!
The obvious answer, as you clearly know, the bonuses at that level do not benefit the corporation, rather the their structure actually tends to lean to unsound management practices. What I have noticed working in a few of the largest corporations is that the CEOs are quite dispensable and there are many who could do a better job ... so BS to the argument that they are needed to keep top talent ... the same goes for the ranks of the financial institutions!
It doesn't. But CEOs in America generally have an incestuous relationship with their board of directors who determine the executive salaries.
According to the PBS/NOW calculation the average American CEO earns about 450X more than the average worker. The average Japanese CEO 10X more, UK and Germany around 50-100X more.
I say pay the CEO a piffling 100X more than the average worker and then hire 350 more workers to increase productivity.
What makes me angry is: all these super wealthy CEOs could be creating new jobs just by taking a cut in their overbloated salaries. But they're not interested in creating jobs. They want to lay off employees and work people to an early grave. Reduced workforce, more productivity. That's the new way of doing business. Only those at the top benefit. The employees and the customers get cheated.
The only thing that is growing is his disapproval rating. Banks don't give loans to people who don't have jobs. Government sponsored employment is only available to a specific demographic. I've got an idea - maybe we should build some new great pyramids! Who says only Egypt can have them! Lets put a sledge hammer in the hands of every unemployed citizen! Come on - lets build the Great Pyramids of America! Millions of new sustainable jobs will be created - jobs that will last thousands of years!
I can imagine what extreme predicaments there would be now if McCain and Palin were in office! Part of the increase in the disapproval ratings come from poorly informed over expectations. I think Obama is doing and excellent job and surely we are much better off as a nation with him as president than we would be if there country was still being led by simple minded unaware indivuduals of the likes of George W.
I'm not knocking him - honestly. What I'm saying is that we are F'd, and this should be quite obvious to most. There is no hope of rebuilding this country - its taken at least 20 years to get it this far - and it hasn't even finished falling down yet. There is nothing that man can do - or any other for that fact. Again, no disrespect of the President. Its just a fact.

Our country should do a the opposite of what we did when we entered WWII. Back then many of the Civilian Conservation Corps workers went into the military and the CCC ended. When we bring our troops home we should have them do work that needs to be done in the here United States of America. They will still need to train our military for combat, but this project could save money, keep the troops working, and benefit our country in numerous ways. There are very many possibilities to this project.

Require corporations to convert some of their jobs to telecommuting jobs. This will not only cut their costs, but also cut employees' costs of commuting, and be a green-friendly way of maintaining or even creating jobs. Telecommuting jobs should be a part of the solution. Government itself could implement the telecommuting solution in many departments, and we have the technology to eliminate all those face-to-face meetings around the world via teleconferencing.

I love the market economy we have, it has allowed for this country to achieve the incredible wealth and power it has. However, we cannot allow market ideology to destroy our system. Last year the market was failing and the govt, however uncomfortable, had to move to prevent a depression. As a CEO put, the govt. is acting as a bridge until the market can operate on it's own. Economies don't recover on a dime. It takes time for them to do so. The recovery plan, TARP, and other things the Fed has done is having a affect. This guy along with the Bush administration through the creation of TARP helped us avert an economic depression. The statement that the unemployment rate went down last month is a tactical evasion of the truth through the mishandling of numbers. Those people who are no longer searching for jobs and have simply taken up unemployment and welfare are not included in the numbers; if they were, the numbers would accurately show that in fact unemployment is STILL going up, even after those jobs most liable to be affected by a weakened economy have already been lost.

This was a great speech especially towards the end. The speech really picked up momentum during the end. Obama is at his best when he's arguing how we need to move foreward instead of accepting the status quo. That's when his speeches really start to hit home and strike a chord with people.

Imagine if McCain/Palin had been elected and they just continued the same policies that got us into this mess? We would be in a WORLD of hurt. I say the word "try" because even he messes up and may mislead. I think he seeks to do what's best, and that's all that counts. So, thank you, Mr. President, for trying. The obvious answer, as you clearly know, the bonuses at that level do not benefit the corporation, rather the their structure actually tends to lean to unsound management practices. What I have noticed working in a few of the largest corporations is that the CEOs are quite dispensable and there are many who could do a better job ... so BS to the argument that they are needed to keep top talent ... the same goes for the ranks of the financial institutions!

It doesn't. But CEOs in America generally have an incestuous relationship with their board of directors who determine the executive salaries.
According to the PBS/NOW calculation the average American CEO earns about 450X more than the average worker. The average Japanese CEO 10X more, UK and Germany around 50-100X more.
I say pay the CEO a piffling 100X more than the average worker and then hire 350 more workers to increase productivity.

The only thing that is growing is his disapproval rating. Banks don't give loans to people who don't have jobs. Government sponsored employment is only available to a specific demographic.
