@mustwinder I know this was two years ago. But, what if the family is starving? What if they have no choice? My grandfather had to kill his failthful husky when the Depression hit, and it tore him that he had to kill his husky. But he had to. Its either starve, or eat to surivive. Sorry.

im sorry to say, but even a farm at this time period doesn't have a right to kill puppies. the way i see it, if he was that concern about not wanting his dog to have puppies, then he should have put her up so she wouldn't be around males. he;s a farmer for go sakes. he knows the sighs of am animal going in to heat. if he had a horse that he didn't want to mate b/c he couldn't afford to feed another one, i bet he would have out it somewhere away for any males.

It's not strangely cruel for a farmer at this time period to drown a litter of puppies. Think about it, if you can't afford to have a large group of dogs at your farm and can't sell them, it's far better to just kill them outright rather than abandon them somewhere, creating a problem for someone else. It's only repugnant to those urban sensibilities who don't understand the fact of life; the fact that our existence - as the existence of puppies - depends on killing other species.

GOD! I hate people who do cruel things like that to puppies, kittens, calves, or any other baby animal. So cruel and sadistic. But thank goodness Mary and Laura saved the dear pups. But that poor mother dog. I wonder if she'll run away from that man. Any monster who does that to animals doesn't deserve compassion.

Sorry so many people gave you thumbs down, you're absolutely right, cultural perspective has a lot to do with our attitudes towards animals. I personally believe it's wrong that some people treat their animals better than their children, which is becoming very common in the United States... or at least in my area!
