It's unique in the US. No one knows about some girl groups in UK. No one ever heard about The Mo-dettes. They were like the brilliant little "vagina" that couldn't. The Slits held sway, yet it was only one year later that their demise was unceremoniously left to posterity. Being left behind on the historical books, Au Pairs got away with being 2 boy-2 girl. They contributed some on rock's most interesting son
gs. It's funny how their music remains the standard we still attest to.
Hey we are putting on a tribute event for Ari Up in Bristol, UK (30.07.11) with Tessa Pollitt, Hollie Cook, Viv Albertine, Adrian Sherwood and Mark Stewart! Please watch our ad youtube.com/watch?v=qE5BCjxH5gM and check out our facebook event if you are interested? Big Love
I wanted to hear some other Slit songs just so I wouldn't be too judgmental of them based on when I heard them in the early 80's. Yeah they still suck.
I'm not really a punk fan, but i would rather believe that punk enjoyed a flaming spectacle of a death sometime around 1982 than think it lived on as a crippled invalid for the last 30 years.
I love this song. I just bought a 2-CD Slits compilation the other day, and my entire family is spellbound by several of these songs. I love Tessa's bass lines, Viv's sparkling guitar, and am always fascinated by Ari's vocals.
punk is a D.I.Y (do it yourself) mentality tied in with an explosion in cheaper accessible technologies with which to create art. Therefore it can be stated with absolute certainty that we are living in the most punk of times you cyber freaks! I don't need no $10 000 piano. So punk ain't dead it is just absolutely mainstream. There are no barriers to entry. Now go and upload your nicely edited porno.
Cut is such an awesome... jungly, stony, weirdo reggae-punk-tribal-something-or-other album. Truly innovative, wild, rebellious girls, and the phenomenal Budgie on drums.
Shame on you world for not buying their records in their heyday. Shame on you for ignoring them when they were here and doing it for real. Shame on you for letting them go to waste. I ask why??? Is it cos they did the rock and reggae thing toether??? Is that why? These ladies rock and they reggae and shame on you world for not seeing how great they were/are...
@davejive Dude, back then MTV wasn't playing them often enough, and the way they aired music, they wouldn't repeat it. So, for myself, I really wasn't aware of them until a random chance of checking out their cd at Virgin Megastore in the year 2006 in San Francisco.
Punk is whatever the fuck you want it to be. It doesn't die, it doesn't live. Putting something in a box then labeling it "punk" doesn't automatically make it good. If it's "dead" or not, music is music and if it hits you somewhere good, then go with it.
Punk didn't die, it just got older, started a family, and got a real job. It still hates its boss, and wants to shag, and do drugs, and it would, if it didn't have to get up at 8:00 the next morning for work at 9:00.
That's a stupid journalist sort of thing to say and band members from many types of music have said that only journalists get into such stupid, heavy theoretical none-sense as they (non performers) try to be something in the music world with such crap. It leaves Punk and it's enthusiasts with no-defense due to it's deliberate logic bind. Berman was also a musician but here he messes up and deliberately tries to make it limited to...... why am i bothering
@asleepzzz There is a low-budget LP released on Y records in the early 1980s. Its got 12 or 13 home recordings of the slits on it. The tape machine they were using has some sort of compressor on it, so the volume is up and down all over the place and the general quality is poor. However it is the slits and you do get another 3 or 4 recordings from their punk incarnation. Think of it as a collection of demos. Y records also released stuff by the POP Group and New Age Steppers (slits affiliates)
Bought the cd in 2002, in downtown SF (VirginMega) store, never heard of them though I did note they were in the Punk Rock movie but unknown to me as was the video a first time viewing for me. First 5 seconds of Instant Hit I kept playing over 50 x. Astonished by just those few notes and the rest is audio ecstacy.
i thought the song NEW TOWN was about sid as those lyrics sound more in tuned with sids life Newtown Where everybody goes around sniffing televisina Or taking footballina Newtown (xn) Gimme 'nother fix (x2) If not I'll go sick I'll be sick (x2) Morning paper bring you something--flash! Make your bones shake Keep busy your mind
