I am actually the composer of this song. I wrote it as a setting of Shakespeare’s sonnet “Oh mistress mine” when i was a student at the Royal College of music in London in the early 1960s. Many years later I wrote my own lyric with this title to it inspired by the book “Precious Bane” When I was composing the music for the Broadway show “Peg” for Peggy Lee I played her this melody and she asked to write a lyric to it and would I mind if she used my title.

I love this song. The New Year has always something sad to bestow upon my family, and this year, it was the flooding in my parents' native Brazil. So it's a cheerful song that incorporates the sirens and everything . . . but it's still hopeful. So thank you, Ms. Spektor. The juxtaposition makes it perfect.

She's writing a note to someone in a war "my dear acquaintance", and there are bullets in the background when he gets the note, which is humorously timed perfectly with "and i raise my glass and we'll have a cheer."... so while she is sitting there elegantly with a glass of wine thinking about how the world is wonderful and wishing everyone to have a great year, the person she is speaking to is killing people, there are sirens going off. In other words, business as usual. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
