In my opinion, It Was Written gives Illmatic a run for it's money. Although Illmatic carries a mystique with it, being the best Debut album ever in the history of Rap, It Was Written resides it's in shadow because of this. It Was Written if it had been released before Illmatic, probably in my opinion would have had the notoriety that Illmatic has. Nas is truly a genius, he had back to back masterpieces
My theory is back when "gangsta rap" hit the scene, it was profitable to make music that painted an intimate picture of the projects, strife, crime, etc. Then either artists or industry folk or both realized there was a bigger market to be had by expanding the sound and subject matter (for the worse) into the pop market..

This track is one of the most underrated in hip hop.
Most people who start the song would not even be able to make it to Nas' verse, which is epic, probably cuz of the absence of "clothes and hoes." The simple loop works elegantly, and the climax in the production when the hook kicks in is dynamic. Very dark and gritty, representative of New York mindset.

Even though Illmatic is a brilliant and classic album, I enjoy listening to It Was Written even more. In my opinion, Nas is the greatest. Hands down.

Hes still lyrically raw its just that hes talking about different shit- he cant go on and talk about the same things all the time. Nas last album is fire- informing,educating and whatever about politics,freedom,stereotypes and many more things while

To all the haters, let me break this one down for you....
This track is one of the most underrated in hip hop.
Most people who start the song would not even be able to make it to Nas' verse, which is epic, probably cuz of the absence of "clothes and hoes." The simple loop works elegantly, and the climax in the production when the hook kicks in is dynamic. Very dark and gritty, representative of New York mindset.

Flex some muscle lol - you have to be a teenager. AGAIN, I am not, I REPEAT not a JayZ fan! Ok we clear? Nas is a great lyricist, no question. Illmatic is his best work to date. The beats and breaks used on his latter work is of a poor calibre in comparison to Illmatic. The combination of the producing done by DJ Premier, Large Professor, L.E.S Q-Tip, Pete Rock makes this a/his stand-out album.

I could go into Nas' high level of technical precision and rhetorical dexterity displayed on Illmatic which has been lacking in his subsequent work, Nas's lyricism and multi-syllabic internal rhyme patterns etc etc but ill prob bore you to death.

Not everyones gonna get down with Nas' topics and rhyming style. Which is cool, but I dig Nas to the fullest. I got questions about Nasir Jones the man though.

this beat makes u fall in love with the Mobb and Nas. This is when all 3 of them were at their best. Prodigy was at the top of his game, his voice was so ill early on. Havocs beats were so RAW and gutter, every time. Nas was strait Illuminati back then . he rhyme schemes were poetic back then. havoc has stayed ill, if not gotten better. P fell off. "We mobbin, puttin niggas in mausoleums...." ILL.
