In 1976 or so my brother brought home an unreleased album by Passport. We loved it so much that the groves turned white from playing it so much. Kat from Katmandu was my favorite.
I was at that very concert (1980 Montreux) - the same night after Passport Van Morrison was next (with Pee Wee Ellis and Mark Isham as a horn section) - and then B.B.King with his large band. After his set B.B.King invited Doldinger, Ellis and Isham up for a long wild jam ..... quite a night ! Montreux always takes place in July for about 2 weeks+, the same year I also saw Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Stanley Clarke, and many more.... I went there every year from '80 - '88 until I moved to NYC.
OMG... Hey this is incredible... I got on Face Book and there are many old HS people on there and just going way back to bands I loved thought of Passport and saw you comment about MFP Roslyn... I was there at that show man... I can't remember who they were with but it was just amazing....
have seen them live in 1978 for two times...was in a little german town called Gronau-Epe . there they were live in the Aula of Carl-Sonnenschein Realschule! They played in this small hall for only 300 persons! But they always give all !! fantastic musicians!!!
Timeless! Left Passport behind during international move 25 years ago, and I am right back there again! ...well, just for a few minutes anyway (don't have any of my original recordings!)

Very nice video, I've always liked Passport very much. I think they are one of the bands where the term jazz-rock really fits. I call Klaus Doldinger the Herb Alpert of Germany because his tunes usually consist of a nice simple melodic head followed by solos then back to the head and out. I love it. Too bad he went for the mellow stuff in the end, for me it was their downfall. I hope he at least made some money from 'selling out' but somehow I doubt it. Always one of my favorite bands though.
Passport were the greatest german jazz-rock/fusion band till the late 70ies when leader/composer K.Doldinger decided to take a more easy-listening/muzak path... Cross Collateral (1974) was their masterpiece and artistic culmination , any videos of that period would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for this wonderful post.
wowh... to relisten it after nearby 30 years gone still blows me away. So cool... Heavy guys all, groovy base, pushing drums, smoothy keybords with Hammond sound and flying away Sax. This clip let me feel old (28 years gone?? - Where ??), but the sound and melodies refresh heavily... Thank's PPFan, thank's Klaus & Compagnions.
I think they were the last great jazz/rock fusion band. Smooth jazz can be repetitive and tepid. Jazz/Rock was progressive and challenging i.e. Weather report,Return to Forever, Tony Williams, Mahavishnu. I'm a Black guy from Tennessee and I love Passport.
A favorite of mine. 9 out of ten times i'm listening to jazz and of ten times that jazz is mainstream bop from the 50s and 60s.
when i'm looking for something a little different this is a regular choice. Nice groove going with atmospheric and textures found in progressive rock.
I bought a couple of Passport cassettes back in the late '80s (Talkback) and had never seen them. So neat after 20 years to actually see them play. Thanks so much for posting,
I never saw Passport in concert, but after seeing this, I appreciate why Passport never had the street cred to be really big: Klaus just looked (and behaved) like hundreds of thousands of European businessmen of the time.
From the best album by second-phase Passport. After acquiring this in the glorious summer of 1978, I bought many Passport LPs trying to find some tracks as good as this. There are very few to match this ...
NO LIE....I just heard "soul Town" on OCEANS 13, and it was the best thing since PINK FLOYD. So I went on the internet and apparently this Klaus Doldinger guy is quite famous. LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERYDAY.
Many thanks from a Passport fan for 30 years in Canada. Ataraxia (album named "Sky Blue" here) was my first exposure, and I have been hooked ever since.
i personaly think the "fusion" music "revolution" is much like when be bop happened:the excitment and fresh ideas..... .....i am glad to have had it revealed to me. the people who condem are missing some GREAT music
@penta145 Habe Klaus Doldinger & Passport Ende Mai bei der Jazzrally in Düsseldorf gesehen. War ein echt geiles Konzert. Klaus Doldinger geht trotz seiner mittlerweile 71 Jahre immer noch gut ab.
