if he would turn his hand arround he would support the lens rather then hold it.

his arms would be closer to his body causing him to stand more solidly on the ground with all the weight going to 1 point.

so yes.. there is a "right" way to hold your camera...

@TheRacerRich Erm... then how would you hold it? That's a telephoto lens. It's heavy in front... you might think that the thumb should be top and the whole left hand is grabbing the lens from bottom... for this case, he balanced it with his thumb... so it won't jerk up...

but one thing for sure is that he's very unfamiliar with the camera...

I am a wedding and event photographer, I know how a large body with a heavy lens feels like and how to hold it to avoid giving jerks or vibrations...
