I've never been a fan of Usher, but I applaud this. He earned respect points for doing this. Of course you can never beat the original, but I appreciate his tribute greatly.
Great job Usher! Kelly's performance looks better because the choreography is customized for his talents. Usher tributes the man and the movie wonderfully.
Jimmy Jib... one can literaly see that at the old movie is the cameraman sitting right behind the movie camera on a big movie crane and by Usher isn't because of nowadays lightweight jimmy jib and camera.
Thats why is Usher sometimes out of picture a little bit and the picture composition fells apart a little bit...and the smaller angle of the lens. It irritates me a little bit.
This is why symphony orchestras have auditions behind a curtain. You can't see the sex or ethnic background of the person auditioning, just hear the music. When this was instituted the symphonies overnight went from almost 100% white men to a smattering of everyone.Usher has a thicker body and different, so you can't always see the crispness of the footwork, but if you blur the faces and make the pants the same most of the negative posters wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the two.
thats hows just how good gene kelly was, props to usher but its not nearly as smooth as kellys..its like the karaoke guy struggling to reach the high notes that come easily for polished singers..good job though
I have a great level of respect for Usher after watching this video. Many times when an artist does a "tribute" to another artist from this golden age of film, it is never true to the original. Usher, in this performance, seemed to want to make absolutely sure he was as true as possible to the original. This has been one of my favorite dance numbers from film, and I think he did an admirable job.
You all do know that Gene Kelly's version was not the original version of Singin in the Rain? Right? RIGHT? Yeah, I didn't think so. Just keep that in mind that Mr Kelly covered a song that had been written over 20 years prior, was in a 1929 movie, when you start to whimper about someone else doing a cover.
@ShadesOfRapture actually yeah i have..you mean the buster keaton one?? please..ive seen all the hollywood and broadway revue and broadway melody movies..it pays to live on broadway when your a kid like i did..
the effort is apparent. but this scene being performed by gene kelly.....its just one of those things that you can never compare to. good effort usher.
Man, people just like to find reasons to hate. The fact is, Usher did a really great job. Do you know how difficult that choreography is to nail? Usher even said so himself that Gene made it look easy and that he seriously had to work at it.
OBVIOUSLY Gene is better, but that's no reason to be rude about it. Let's see you perform it half as good as either of them and then you can talk.
I have no intention to criticise Usher. But his performance is no match with the original one by Gene Kelly. Usher's acts somehow are too exaggerated and apparently too hip-hop to me while the original is just perfectly natural.
Anyway, great thanks for Usher's work, considering it will be the 60th Anniversary of Singing in the Rain movie next year.
I really like it, you can see the effort put in to get all of the small motions gene did. One thing stands out to me tho, He didn't hand off the umbrella. ha ha, Great job, Nicely Preformed!
Not even close. Usher wishes he had a fraction of the dance ability of Gene Kelly. This is as hard to watch as Bono's attempt to duet with Sinatra. Does Usher really believe he's even in the same league? Nice attempt at trying to establish credibility as a dancer. Usher isn't even a great hip hop dancer and he thinks he is a suitable performer for a tribute to arguably the greatest film dancer ever, a man with years of true technical training and unparalleled charisma. Unreal.
This was so much fun! I usually don't like Usher but this was a really fun thing to watch. Not like Gene Kelly, of course, but I love it how he reacted the entire scene.
I'm glad someone like Usher respects Gene Kelly. But Gene makes this look easy and Usher is having a hard time with this. Nobody and I mean nobody today could dance like Gene kelly
Respect to Usher, at least he knows about the old school and respects it. Very very few of these modern so-called "artists" have any clue about the great beauty that came before them.
In my opinion, Usher's dancing a bit stiff, like he KNOWs he's tring to match up to Gene Kelly...whereas Gene Kelly was free to just dance in his version without any worriesd. Both are great. Much respect to Usher recognizing and putting the time and immense effort in to even attempt to do a re-make...in a time in music where many artists are criticised for not looking back, here Usher is doing just so, and he did a wonderful job...
See how you can't really see the rain in Usher's version? That's because in the original they added milk to the water so the camera could see the rain, they didn't o that in the new one.
I'm glad he did this. Looking at it at first I was skeptical. I'm not an Usher fan... he's just not my style of music...but I really like that he did this. If nothing else, his fans are being familiarized with something wonderful because of his efforts. That's noble!
Kudos to Usher for paying his tribue to one of the Great Legends! This was very classy and respectful and even t hough Usher wasn't near Gene Kelly's genius he did his best and that is commendable! I have a lot more respect for Usher now than before!
Wow!! This is awesome to see Usher this way. Paying a great tribute to Gene Kelly, who was a great dancer/entertainer. This is a classic movie, I work with the elderly and I would say, that this is their all time favorite movie! I am now going to be looking at Usher in a whole new light. This is awesome to see him showing us his talents in this way. Wow, awesome stuff. Yea, Usher! He gets it will you?
I have to agree while in actual dancing talent Usher pales in comparison to Gene its awesome to see someone actually act/dance out an entire scene out of respect for someone. You don't see that very often anymore.
I must say... Usher is a great performer... but when you compare the dancing amongst the two, side by side, Gene Kelly definitely owns this scene. All the way.
Usher doesn't have the same almost careless grace and ease of movement as Mr Kelly. But it takes guts to pay a dance tribute to a performer as epic as Gene Kelly.
So many miss the point. Usher did a fantastic job. It is always harder to copy the original than it is to do the original. While Gene Kelly was indeed one of a kind, Usher was more than up to the task. I was never an Usher fan but after watching this video I gained so much respect for him.
I'm impressed! He's paying tribute to a great movie and doing a good job! He's not trying to top it, he's just honoring Gene Kelly. There's a huge difference between ripping off and honoring!!
Er, could somebody tell me who is the guy dressed in white in the shopwindow ? I'll get my eyes checked don't worry, but I don't recognize him right yet è_O
Gene Kelly is one of the most amazing people to have lived. now, i respect Usher for respecting Gene. and that is right, it's unfair to compare the two. Gene Kelly will always have his own style and originality. Usher did a pretty amazing job though, he just looks bad compared to Gene who's more suited for this. he looks better doing it is what i mean. that is all.
Usher has swagger, Gene Kelly has class. I like both of these versions, though! Of course Gene Kelly cannot be upstaged in skill, but the difference lies in carraige. It really is a well-done, lovely tribute. Kudos =)
I didn't really care for Usher before I saw this. I think he did an amazing job!! To be able to tap and dance and sing almost identical is simply amazing. Of course it's hard to compare, Gene Kelly was in a class of his own, but Usher did an amazing job here. I wish he would do more like this.
It's sad that some people can't see what Usher is trying to do. He is paying tribute, not trying to be better than Gene. When his young fans watch this they will be curious to see the original, and a whole new generation is then introduced to Gene Kelly and Old Hollywood.
usher did good as a tribute, but nobody can do it like gene kelly even himself because he never could do this dance again.... he was a really good dancer and actor
oh come on, this isn't about comparing. It's very nice that a modern day artist like usher. doesn't forget the past. And wanted to make a tribute to Gene Kelly..... That's very nice of him!!!!!! We shouldn't forget all these glorious artists of the past..... Bravo Usher!!!!! ;)
I'm not a big fan of usher, but I thought he did a wonderful job...and to the people who said he shouldn't have messed with a classic, I think you've missed the mark. Too many teenagers and sadly, even older kids, have no clue who Ginger Rogers, Fred Astair or Gene Kelly are. Without young, famous and "cool" people, like Usher, it would just be a matter of time before they are totally forgotten.
usher did a wonderful job in this tribute to gene kelly not just anybody could recreate these dance moves and scene and it be flawless but usher definitely did.
Usher was not trying to beat or top the original, he was simply paying a great deal of respect to it. Of course his dancing talent pales in comparison to Gene, but I have so much respect for Usher to take the time to pay homage.
@lynseypdxda I completely agree with you. I am 72 years old, and I can honestly say that the so called talent
that's out there in this day and age leaves much to be desired, however, I will say that after watching this tribute to Gene Kelly by Usher, I have a New Found Respect for Usher. I think this young man is wonderful, and the next time he's a guest on a show that I'm watching, I will not turn it off, because this kid has talent and respect. Gene was looking down and smiling! Usher Yay:)
@LivingDeadGirl7108 Well somewhat true, it was filmed with a mixture of milk and water; 1 part milk to 3 parts water. The concoction caused Gene Kelly's wool suit to shrink dramatically...they went through a few.
Considering how good a dancer Gene Kelly was, when you consider how closely to the original he got just shows Usher's skills, and how he nobly tips his hat to Gene. I have seen the one with just Usher, and in that case, he also honors Gene by keeping to what Gene did in many respects, but had enough of himself in it to claim the number for his own and in his own way. I think that Gene would have welcomed that, knowing that one has to be himself no matter what he does. He would have liked it.
What is it about Gene Kelly that makes his dancing look so effortless? He will always be the greatest dancers in my eyes. Kudos to Usher though for maybe introducing some youngsters to the great Gene Kelly.

Too many teenagers and sadly, even older kids, have no clue who Ginger Rogers, Fred Astair or Gene Kelly are. Without young, famous and "cool" people, like Usher, it would just be a matter of time before they are totally forgotten.

nowhere close to gene kelly, not even close. But nice to see that the old musical classicals arent dead.

there´s much to less rain in ushers version :/
dukeraoul100 10 months ago
@dukeraoul100 in Gene Kelly's version they added milk to the water so it would show up better, i dont think they did that in Usher's version.

Usher's good however in some parts he went too fast or too slow.
BuffaloMike007 10 months ago
Usher was not trying to beat or top the original, he was simply paying a great deal of respect to it. Of course his dancing talent pales in comparison to Gene, but I have so much respect for Usher to take the time to pay homage.
lynseypdxda 10 months ago 82
@lynseypdxda I completely agree with you. I am 72 years old, and I can honestly say that the so called talent
that's out there in this day and age leaves much to be desired, however, I will say that after watching this tribute to Gene Kelly by Usher, I have a New Found Respect for Usher. I think this young man is wonderful, and the next time he's a guest on a show that I'm watching, I will not turn it off, because this kid has talent and respect. Gene was looking down and smiling! Usher Yay:)

Little known movie fact!! The original "singing in the rain" was filmed with milk not water. Bcuz they couldn't get the water to show up on camera.
LivingDeadGirl7108 10 months ago

He would have liked it.
paladin313 1 year ago
What is it about Gene Kelly that makes his dancing look so effortless? He will always be the greatest dancers in my eyes. Kudos to Usher though for maybe introducing some youngsters to the great Gene Kelly.
