The r142,r143 and r160 suk the r142 don't even have 15 yrs in service and have to many issues and r143 and r160 don't even have 10yrs in service and have brake and power issue what does this tell u that they suk the r32 and r42 have 40+ yrs in service don't have any issues the r62 and r68 have 20+ yrs in service no issues this tells u that the newer cars are not strong enough for heavy service like the older cars.
@junjun798 this tells you never cars have a lot more components in them that need some fine tuning. it's called progress. and frankly R143s and R160s have a much higher MTBF than a lot of these older trains...
@MrTransman99 The R1s were scrapped and replaced by other trains. The redbird trains might bave been scrapped and have been replaced by the R62 and R62A. Now the R62 and R62A may be also replaced, but by the R142 and R142A.
@cyndie26 No the R62/R62A wont get retired until 2026 the oldest r62 is 27 years old and the oldest R62A is 26 years years old.The Youngest R62 is 26 and the youngest R62A is 23.

@subwaynut9234 i think it is the interior door. The r143 has a single door when the R160 has double. I'm not sure myself but thats best i got. Check next time you ride the L train
i really like the r160s with their new technology and the train goes smoothly but i got use of the r42, i remember everyday when i was little riding the L train to Manhattan and now going to skwel the remaning r42s are in the J, i wish the L line was still r42 and not r160s
all R42 are only running on (J)(Z) lines . The R32 are mainly running on the (c) But 2 sets run on the (A) and 1 set runs on the (B) and (F) . Those cars look like they can go another 20 or so more years, they look practically new even though yeah they are closing in on around 40 years. technically, from what ive heard a long time ago, first they got replaced by r-143's.then those got moved and replaced by r-160's.correct me if im wrong
Nope. Back in the day the R143s ran OPTO service on the weekends. Then the OPTO service was replaced by R160s. Then shortly there after they started running R160s weekdays, and phased out the R42s.
@irishany no they're adding more cars on the L line because between 2002-2005 the whole line overcrowded during rush hour and there isn't enough R143s to handle all those people
i will never get used to the new trains....i grew up on these R38's R40's and R42's. hate to see them go...and i miss the redbirds that i used to ride... Flushing Main st...
That's a shame there aren't any more R42's on the L (Canarsie line). The ones with the blue stripe around them looked the best, IMO. I really miss those. And, I also remember riding the L during its final days as the "LL"--1:17. (It changed to the letter "L" around 1985-86.)
The R142's (R-100 whatever!), as far as I'm concerned, can go and SUCK NUT! Those trains are like the cufflinks on our gentrified (at least for the past 15 years), three-piece suit of a city. It's so fucking horrible. :(

lets just say that i can tolerate the R62s and R68s better than the R160s R179s etc etc. i also heard that these new trains are causing problems, especially with power outages. why do u think they took these new cars off the A line. the rockaways had power problems so they put the old skool trains back. this city still has a whole lot of old skool subway equipment and signals. these new trains are not suitable for the subway system. i say dump them in the ocean early and drown them!

i hate all the St Louis cars, so horrible. now i know why they went out of business. i enjoy the R32s, R160s, R62/62As, R68/68As, and R143s. who gave me six thumbs down?
i am gonna admit i also gave u a thumbs down be cuz i love the r42s. i love all the old skool trains except the r44 and r46. all cars that had railfan windows, the ability to ride in between them, and trains that saw old skool graffiti. the r160s are just to damn modern, they don't fit in. the r160s are supposed to run under control of CBTC train control, but only half of the l line has CBTC signals. i can't imagine seeing an r160 running thundering down (CONTINUED ON NEXT COMMENT)
(CONTINUED) the culver line in my neighborhood. the r160s aren't suited to the current envirment the subway is in; old ass train signals such as the ones at smith 9 st and 4th avenue, and loads of other problems, so until the mta COMPLETELY rehabilitates the WHOLE system to be suited to the r160s capabilities, THEN u can start retiring the old skool cars. so far the best suited cars to the current status of the system are the OLD skool cars!!!!!!!! believe me the r160s will suffer...
I couldnt agree with u more. Old skool subways was basically what made NYC. other cites in this country have subways but there is no city that had trains like this beautiful city did. These new skool trains are plain and boring as hell. lets be real, who the hell needs an automated announcement when u already know where u going?? i hope these trains do face a lot of problems so mayb the MTA will think about reefing these pieces of shits early
The R42's were not replaced by the 160 fleet. Those are 143's on the L line. One of the few differences is the location of the American flag on the front of the train.
Your wrong. And you think I don't know how to tell the difference between a R143 and R160? LOL
Dude, the R160s and R143s run on the same line. There are not enough R143s to cover the whole line so they had some 42s running and they replaced the 42s with R160s. Get your facts straight.
These trains are still on the J/M/Z. They just took the last 2 that operated the L Line during rush hours. However, they won't be on the J/M/Z for too much longer because of the POS R160s.
They will be greatly missed. I was able to get my last video and pic of a R42 at Broadway Junction. I knew after the train left I would never see another R42 L.
I was born and raised in NYC. I remember riding the subways when they had fans hanging from the ceilings and wicker seats (you can still see them in the Transit Museum). I remember so well when the trains had double letters and the number 8 (no longer in existence). Thanks for a lovely tribute.
they also have R143 on the L which are a little bit older than the R160, but anyways ur right the R42's, all old train models in general are the best, tose new trains just break down all the time, if it not the computer, its the propulsion and many other things, like my friend, a train operator says "old is good"
R160s do not have automated door closing; the TO and conductor controls everything. The conductors look at the cameras if available to check no one's stuck, or they'd pull the brakes.
New Tech subways do suck. When I ride the E line. i'l wait as long as i have to for an R42 cuz i honestly cant stand riding the newer cars. all these dummies that like the new trains have no idea what they talkin about. any real newyorker would tell u that the old subways is where its at
You know you could give those R160s & R143s to the E train. :-) . I for one enjoy the engine sounds of the new trains. Plus the old train's lights sort of hurt my eyes. Plus the lady who tells the stops are nice. Now if only they designed the new cars with large windows on front so you guys could videotape it.
QUINNSANS, if u like the newer trains so much, why dont u move to London England or something and enjoy ur quiet subways. these new pieces of shit aint suitable for the new york subway system.
The R42 Dominates the J/M/Z lines. How do you say you like them on the Q anyway? lmao. You don't see R42 operating on the Q, very rare. You MIGHT see one or two in a set of R40Ms. You do however see some R42s operate the N line. But if you want to see alot of R42, go over to the J/M/Z. They run all the time on there and those are the only trains you see if you like them alot :)
Look at the sides of the car - riffles. R42s have wider riffles and less of the "waves" while R40s have more of them because they are much smaller. The front could be the same, but I recognize the R40Ms (not slant) from riffles.
Well they are not getting rid of R42s yet thank god but they have removed the last 2 from the L line. Soon the R160s will replace all R38s, Slant R40s, and G.E rebuilt R32s. They will all be scrapped.
The R42 fleet is not being retired Yet. They just removed the 2 R42 sets from the L line and put 2 R160 sets to get rid of the R42s. The 2 sets of R42s will go to which ever yard can use them. They will prolly be moved to the J/M/Z lines. Soon your going to see R160s on the J/M/Z lines. Soon the R42s are going to be removed from the J/M/Z and replaced by R160s and the 42 fleet will be scrapped. Railfan as much as possible now because these R160s are replacing alot of trains.
the R38's were the best I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS. The R46 improved after the GTO.

Spitfire995 2 years ago 2
I couldnt agree with u more. Old skool subways was basically what made NYC. other cites in this country have subways but there is no city that had trains like this beautiful city did. These new skool trains are plain and boring as hell. lets be real, who the hell needs an automated announcement when u already know where u going?? i hope these trains do face a lot of problems so mayb the MTA will think about reefing these pieces of shits early
noreaga12326 2 years ago
agreed

poor L Train
QueenArtits 3 years ago 3
The R42's were not replaced by the 160 fleet. Those are 143's on the L line. One of the few differences is the location of the American flag on the front of the train.
brettfavreforever4 3 years ago
Your wrong. And you think I don't know how to tell the difference between a R143 and R160? LOL
Dude, the R160s and R143s run on the same line. There are not enough R143s to cover the whole line so they had some 42s running and they replaced the 42s with R160s. Get your facts straight.
MustangFan424 3 years ago
these railfan windows that we were takin for granted on the l a few years ago. now theyre...gone
moman1208 4 years ago
i wonder why they had double lettered trains for locals?
irishany 4 years ago
u got that right thaTS GRAFITTI.i miss these old train rip r-42s
irishany 4 years ago
These trains are still on the J/M/Z. They just took the last 2 that operated the L Line during rush hours. However, they won't be on the J/M/Z for too much longer because of the POS R160s.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
hey i know there no more r42 on the l line...butt i saw them running yesturday like from 5 am to 9 am
MeltedSOX 3 years ago
th Z already has r160s on it already soon in september the J and the M will have it

If you think about R160's are computer automated which is not good if you think about it.

what dirty trains they were back in the 70s
besides, its like when people were weeping over the "death" of the redbird trains that once ran on the 7 line

no more rail fan windows on the L line. I still have a hard time not calling it the LL.
frilter199 4 years ago 2
They will be greatly missed. I was able to get my last video and pic of a R42 at Broadway Junction. I knew after the train left I would never see another R42 L.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
I was born and raised in NYC. I remember riding the subways when they had fans hanging from the ceilings and wicker seats (you can still see them in the Transit Museum). I remember so well when the trains had double letters and the number 8 (no longer in existence). Thanks for a lovely tribute.
MizusFish 4 years ago 2
Just to update you guys, R42s are now extinct from the L Line. 3 R160As replaced the 2 R42s. RIP R42s, you will be greatly missed.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
The R160 is much better
arnold165 4 years ago
R42 is a real train. R160s suck ass.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
But both are Great
arnold165 4 years ago 5
they also have R143 on the L which are a little bit older than the R160, but anyways ur right the R42's, all old train models in general are the best, tose new trains just break down all the time, if it not the computer, its the propulsion and many other things, like my friend, a train operator says "old is good"
polishkid11191 4 years ago 2
all those "New Technology trains" suck ass especially the 142.
The thought of R160's and CBTC on the L makes me want to avoid the line as much as possible.
RIP R42's
westin6814 4 years ago
your right...I HATE THE R-160s!!!!
ArtyKing12345 3 years ago
R!60s have automated door closing and opening which can kill people then the MTA could be sued if that ever happens
GMBBlokus 3 years ago
i dont think soo
ArtyKing12345 3 years ago
you wanna test it?
GMBBlokus 3 years ago 2
R160s do not have automated door closing; the TO and conductor controls everything. The conductors look at the cameras if available to check no one's stuck, or they'd pull the brakes.
imdanumber1 3 years ago
Well some of them maybe some bad conductors.
GMBBlokus 3 years ago
That's true, it's bad enough some conductors don't have courtesy to open the door if you're stuck.
imdanumber1 3 years ago
are you retarded or do you like pissing people off?
DanTheMan702 3 years ago
Oh go suck a lollipop for all I care.
GMBBlokus 3 years ago 3
New Tech subways do suck. When I ride the E line. i'l wait as long as i have to for an R42 cuz i honestly cant stand riding the newer cars. all these dummies that like the new trains have no idea what they talkin about. any real newyorker would tell u that the old subways is where its at
noreaga12326 2 years ago
You know you could give those R160s & R143s to the E train. :-) . I for one enjoy the engine sounds of the new trains. Plus the old train's lights sort of hurt my eyes. Plus the lady who tells the stops are nice. Now if only they designed the new cars with large windows on front so you guys could videotape it.

R160A's are now on the E line
mysteryman557 2 years ago
l know.
nizaralvarez1943257 2 years ago 3
It does. So does the F line.
WoodyRamesses 2 years ago
o give me a break the new trains are plain and boring. if u like newer subway models to move to london or another city
noreaga12326 2 years ago
QUINNSANS, if u like the newer trains so much, why dont u move to London England or something and enjoy ur quiet subways. these new pieces of shit aint suitable for the new york subway system.
noreaga12326 2 years ago
wtf lo0ng ass replying
koolmazin 2 years ago
They will all be gone by May of 2008. You know. I like this model better on the Q Line.
craigshadow2007 4 years ago
The R42 doesn't operate the Q, Only R68s.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
They do on the weekends.
craigshadow2007 4 years ago
No they do not. On the weekends you see R40Ms which look very similar to R42s. On weekends R68s and R40Ms are ran on the Q.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
Part of the R40M Q Train has 2 R42 cars in them too.
craigshadow2007 4 years ago
The R42 Dominates the J/M/Z lines. How do you say you like them on the Q anyway? lmao. You don't see R42 operating on the Q, very rare. You MIGHT see one or two in a set of R40Ms. You do however see some R42s operate the N line. But if you want to see alot of R42, go over to the J/M/Z. They run all the time on there and those are the only trains you see if you like them alot :)
MustangFan424 4 years ago
Look at the sides of the car - riffles. R42s have wider riffles and less of the "waves" while R40s have more of them because they are much smaller. The front could be the same, but I recognize the R40Ms (not slant) from riffles.
mariuszny 4 years ago
Well they are not getting rid of R42s yet thank god but they have removed the last 2 from the L line. Soon the R160s will replace all R38s, Slant R40s, and G.E rebuilt R32s. They will all be scrapped.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
so where are they gonna keep these old timers?
NyZpLAyAz1 4 years ago
The R42 fleet is not being retired Yet. They just removed the 2 R42 sets from the L line and put 2 R160 sets to get rid of the R42s. The 2 sets of R42s will go to which ever yard can use them. They will prolly be moved to the J/M/Z lines. Soon your going to see R160s on the J/M/Z lines. Soon the R42s are going to be removed from the J/M/Z and replaced by R160s and the 42 fleet will be scrapped. Railfan as much as possible now because these R160s are replacing alot of trains.
MustangFan424 4 years ago
I want to know what is the name of that song?
WoodyRamesses 2 years ago
too bad they must go, soon the r160 will have to be retired also
