i just moved house an found a soccer flag signed by the 1971 australian team..i thought i lost it in a house fire yrs ago.....cool aust vs england in that year...thanks for uploading this..not much info on aussie soccer in 1971
22 men. One and half hours 'action'. One goal. Yep, great entertainment. Which is why soccer is now a summer sport in Australia. It simply cannot compete with other football codes which the majority of people in the world just do not have access to. Thus, the rest of the world regards soccer as the 'best'. It's not. It's simply the 'only' one they've ever seen. They know no better. And God bless them for it.
How easy is it to score in AFL pal, big goals blast it as high as you can if you miss you still score a point. Ball coming from high up catch it with your hands and get a "freekick" type option. Football is a game of chess having to break down a usually stirdy defence inorder to score in a limited frame of area. It requires a different skill and tactical approach to that "bash n catch" entertainment you're talking about. You're probably way over your head on this one, and god bless you for it.
You should know better, pal, coming from Melbourne as you do. We can speak with immense authority on the relative worth of football codes because we actually get exposed to ALL of them. As you would know, on some days in Melbourne you have a choice of AFL, rugby league, rugby union or soccer to go and actually watch live. Name a city in another country where its inhabitants have such a choice. Soccer doesn't drive the conversations, mate, and it never will. It's second string stuff.
Far out...i could of made the national team for Australia back then, not only that but all the players go down like little bitches, no wonder the game has the reputation it has right now, thats just ridiculous!
Are u saying the standard there is good? Air swings, the defensive mistake by the Australian player that an under 10s player could of cleared which led to their goal, and are u also saying that all those antics of them dropping to their knees as if they had been shot is not just sad to watch?
Lol, please enlighten me as to what way the scoreline makes the standard of play ANY different whatsoever..considering that was my entire point, i didnt even mention if we lost at all..
What I am saying is the game was different back then. The normal standard of play was lower as they did not have as much knowledge about how to have players at their physical peak, did not maximise diets and all the other things that occur these days to have people playing at a higher level.
Also I think back in '71 they were still using metal studs so small nicks and things would have hurt a hell of a lot more.

Australia didn't have coloured television until 1975. We also didn't get SONY REFLEX-O-MATIC until the mid 2000's.

I would have thought that they'd have broadcast this in colour back in the early 70's
