@StephanAOTTO1 You mentioned that there is an official video of DreamGirls available, can U inbox me or tell me how can a individual purchase that video? And about how much does it cost?
It surprises me how timeless these songs are...which is why they were able to keep so much of the original songs in the recent movie..Genial from the musical-writers
I saw Dreamgirls when it was @ the Apollo this past season, the stage show by far surpasses the movie. Absolutely amazing and something I will see if it ever makes it to Hawaii!!
Anyone out there (who isn't afraid of reprocussions) have a clean version of this number. Love the confrontation between Effie and her brother but the skips are distracting (but still love to see this..no disrespect summerholliday44) :O)
too add to the listen discussion, the production on B-Way like this november and then the tour, will have listen reworked as a duet with Deena and Effie basically acting as their making up in act 2.... i cant say i approve 100 percent but it is sort of cool.
It's a shame they're no doubt replacing the song that the new version of "listen" is taking over. In that song it was Deena and Effie making up for the past. "believe me Effie, I didn't know what Curtis was doing to you..." Guess this new tour will probably have a soundtrack and will replace the Original in people's minds in the future. Sad the OBC soundtrack left out a lot of the music that was sung dialog which if it exists will probably not be released since it's been all these years.
@Phyre702 But several times during the run of the Show, the tempos of number such as Heavy, One Night Only (Disco) and Hard to Say Goodbye my love... Most recent productions I have seen have slowed the pace considerably to One Night Only (Disco). Whether it is to suit the actresses or not, One Night Only (Disco) is a well, Disco song and I prefer it fast like this...
The issue with this footage is it skips so it seems to be faster that it actually is. The Dreams versions is uptempo but not as fast as it appears here.
@cabupa Youd be surprised, I have many soundboard recordings of performances, and they are all pretty fast... There is skipping and generational loss here, but One Night Only (disco), at least during the initial run and subsequent national tour, was always performed fast. The OBC album version was slowed down considerably compared to live performances. The tempo in recent years of the song seems to change with the actress, but I have noticed that it does seem slower.
The back ground singers are singing the chorus to "Miss You, Old Friend" I miss you, old friend. Can I hold you. I know it's been a long time old friend, do you mind.
Effie is talking with Marty and he's flown C.C. in who has written "One Night Only' for her .
I think if they reorchrestrated it, it could work; Making it sound more symphonic than pop and having Effie do the beltier parts and Deena carry the melody. It could work.
Exactly. She had a mind of her own and Curtis repeatedly dismissed her ideas, her ambitions. In the play she slowly becomes more and more frustrated, with the truth about Effie the last straw. It would make Listen more powerful for both her and Effie.
Correct words in "Listen" don't work for the way Denna was written. Also It would destroy The Dreams version of "One Night Only" & "I'm Somebody" there is dialogue with the song of each of The Dreams wants. " I want out" Denna ideas aren't dismissed she's ready to move on. Finding out about Effie is the last straw. Effie doesn't need Curtis to listen to her once she see's for herself that Curtis has stolen her song.
I know this sounds silly but i imagined lorell or effie singing listen while we see deena and curtis silently illustrating their tension but i think that that wouldnt really go i just cant stop imagining loretta devine singing listen (that sounds wierd too :P)
You all remember the Oscar performances of the three added songs? I kinda imagined something like that for Love You I Do (Lorrell and Effie duet seperately during Lorrell's B-day party about Jimmy and Curtis respectively) and Listen (Deena and Effie duet about Curtis). I don't have it all figured out in my head but I thought it would good reimagining of those numbers for the stage- especially with Listen (could you have imagined Sheryl Lee Ralph carrying THAT number, alone?)
they wouldn't have to do it for love you i do but they will for listen, but they can put a new solo for deena after effie and her talk and before curtis comfronts her
Ugh, I love those outfits the Dreams wear during One Night Only...I wonder how the new Broadway production will look like? More like the movie or more like the original production? They have to include Listen though for poor old Deena...
the Will Not Add Listen Only Original Song Listen Was Added To The Movie for the movie Version.Just As I Love you I Do not Original Songs Every Movie Version has to add more numbers to the production
the costums That The Where are in The Production.they can't change that they are made in the rigt order for the right scenes not as the movie.just like (I AM CHANGING) Effie Has To Change her while Singing.
i really hope they don't keep listen because thats beyonce's song but i do hope they put a solo for deena at the end, in between the time she reunites wit effie and before she breaks up wit curtis,, then i beleive that deena really should sing sing in the first act and half of the 2nd act because deena is not supposed to be able to sing but when her solo come up, it reveals that deena can actual sing powerhouse not just pop, i beleive sasha allen would be a great candidate
I don't think there's time for a solo for Denna. It's written for Effie to confront Curtis and repair her relationship with Denna. The Dreams "want out" by this time. Denna can sing. She's just not to be able to sing better then Effie.
Deena in the play and Deena in the musical are too different entities... She is inanimate in the movie, fluff and display. Listen made no sense in the movie. Bill condon said he rewrote the second act of the movie because is wasnt beefy enough, but all the beef and answers were already there... I love Deena's final confrontation with curtis during "I'm Somebody"... And then we go straight to 'Hard to say goodbye'... Listen should never be worked into the play!!!
We, the fans, MUST petition The Shubert Organization for an OFFICIAL DVD, because IT ALREADY EXISTS!! There's an official video, available, only at The Lucille Lortel Theatre, NYC, and ONLY to be viewed by those lucky enough to get to be able to put on an official production. I was part of one, asked to play CC, and, you wouldn't believe how much real material there is in existance from this show, held captive by the Shubert Org.!!!
Like I said, we've got to start calling & emailing the Shubert Organization, as they're the final authorities in this matter at shubertorganizationdotcom & give 'em hell! Many of these guys live in such a Broadway bubble, that most don't may not even believe how much the fans want to see this production, despite the success of the film, and yes, there are some racial issues attached to that belief, as there always are in the NYC theatre world, sadly.....
Not only is there an official recording, there are press materials, costumes, etc., which are still in the hands of the Shubert O., much like what happens with a film co. after the film has finished production.
Even with the newer version of the Original Broadway Album out recently they only added a couple of songs not on the first release.
They still didn't include the full versions of the edited songs "Move", "And I'm Telling You" and Effie's "One Night Only" solo. They still sit on the stuff and don't give it to fans.
thank you so much for these videos, you make a dremgirls fan dream come true, i really hope you post more vids or post the whole musical on google, you are a blessing.
Despite the slightly flacid material, Michael Bennett lifted this show into the high heavens. Thank you for posting his original staging for all the world to see!
First of all, this is my first time in commenting a video here in Youtube and do you know what dragged me here? It's because i REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want to see the full show! Please post it.
I'm EXTREMELY DESPERATE (a trillion times!) to see the whole production! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease post the whole musical 'cause i can't afford to buy the DVD (JesusFan is selling it for $200! too expensive for me!)! It's okay if the video's not really good but i will ABSOLUTELY appreaciate it and i will very much treasure it like my life. PS., T.Y. for posting these amazing clips for HUGE & DIEHARD fans like me! i appreciate it VERY MUCH!
