What is more important than winning the INDY 500? Bringing a 1971 Dodge Challenger to a safe stop after 100+ m.p.h. speeds! No anti-lock,4-wheel disc:(
This was not the first time that an edited version of the Indianapolis "500" was shown on network TV the evening of the day the race took place, contrary to popular belief.
In 1954, a half-hour of filmed highlights of that day's Indianapolis "500" was edited together in-time for it to be fed from Indianapolis to the ABC television network for showing that evening in prime-time.
But the 1971 effort, commercials included, was a two-hour show.
Just check my channel. You'll see it there, beginning with the qualifying coverage from Indy 500: The Classics 1973 episode all the way through all the tragic events of the race, with the ABC broadcast in tact. It's in a 14-video set.

I didn't know Jackie did colour before he retired. He hasn't got his high pitched wee Scott thing down yet.

Who the hell is Dave Letterman, he'll never last in this business :)
At first i thought it as Dan Gurney, don't think he was doing TV sports yet.
