  • Candle Cove pasta brought me here. I had no idea what calliope meant until now. Makes the pasta even creepier. This was still cool noneoftheless.

  • reminds me of the candle cove

  • she can play this song " waiting for the robert e lee" fast!

  • This makes me want to light up a couple of blunts and listen to this for hours on end.

  • This makes me want to write for the calliope!

  • VernianProcess, Your right it seems like there's always at least one in every

    crowd.

  • the calliope has go to be the most bad-ass instrument of all time

  • when I was a little kid living in eastern ohio...we would hear that music and knew the delta quenn was making it's way on the ohio river..thanks for posting

  • U know my names Calliope XD

  • Absolutely love this!! Haven't heard this fantasic music, since the

old days at Cornell Universitys Schoekolf Field 4th of July celebration.

  • @VernianProcess love your music :D

  • @VernianProcess

Check back on some of the comments. All is well. It was a contest between the 2 boats. The voice you heard was from the other player. They were ribbing each other. She did win the contest.

  • @HiJack1313 Oh ok I see... that's cool then. Glad it was all in fun. I had a feeling it was some ignorant tourist.

  • Merrie Melodies?

  • the more often you use a single whistle, the hotter it stays, the less condensation you have in the whistles, the better is the tone.

Any big steamwhistle has the problem that the first thing that comes out when you pull the line, is a shower of water that has condensed in the long pipe from the boiler to the whistle. Then follows a sound like a walrus coughing which slowly becomes somewhat melodic.

  • u gada love the calliope u just gada! :)

  • It sounds even better when the boat is underway.

  • i'VE PLAYED THE CALLIOPE BEFORE. My name is Matthew Mason and I am 10 years old and i've been to Chattanooga to play that calliope. it was awesome! I got to meet the owner Maura Phillips.

  • Like it?I LOVE it!

  • Is that Alabama Jubilee?

  • @767373jae The song is "Waitin' for the Robert E.Lee" if that was your question.Al Jolson sang it,among other folks.

  • Hello! I think this is a great video! On November 4, there will be a Delta Queen/Southern Belle/Cincinnati Belle riverboat calliope concert here in Chattanooga on the Tennessee River. I am writing a blog tour of Delta Queen in honor of the event and hope you don't mind if I link this video to it! After the event, I might have a great calliope video to post.

  • more!!!

  • @tonybones5

I really wish I could get more. The only way it might done now is to find where it is in TN being used as a Hotel, rent a room, and hope they still fire up the Calliope.

  • @HiJack1313 The steam is still up on the boat and the calliope was played up untill November when it started getting too cold to keep the lines with steam. She will play again in the sring. Come and visit and hear her sing.

  • Hey whats the name of the song!? Love it lol

  • @reed14567 First one is "Waitin' on the Robert E Lee". The second one is "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" (The Looney Tunes theme-song).

  • I gotta weigh in on this. This lady is the best Calliope player I ever heard. She has three nice sets organized, and she avoids what I call "the dodo bird" accompaniment in the left hand and plays real harmony. This particular set has some nice diminished 7ths and augmented 6ths (I think). She varries the tempo from piece to piece which makes it interesting. And the glissando at the end and the nice cadence is fantastic! The sight of the pipes during the glissando is really neat!

  • @Shenandoah58

I agree with you 100%. She's the best we heard of any of the others on our 12 trips.

I had a Music company contact me. They were interested in getting her to help them make some Calliope music. She couldn't be found any where.

Maybe she checks in here once in awhile.

Or, maybe she already works for another company that wants to keep her a secret. 8:)

  • i must say it sounds so much better when at a proper boiler pressure

  • Delta queen for is Symbol My Bill, one man so wonderful I hope God bless him.

    THank you for this vidéo.

    Nathalie

  • This video always puts me in a good mood. Love it. Thanks for posting it.

  • That's awesome how they use the ships steam for the organ.

  • i like how it sounds.

  • @Rylosalex The song is "Waiting on robert e lee"

  • Wow, that takes you way back to when those were going up and down the rivers daily. Very cool video.

  • One of the most fun of our 20+ cruises!

  • If the calliope still works, even as Delta Queen's a hotel now, I want to go sleep over on her and play "On Top of Spaghetti".

  • It's time for Candle Cove :D

  • is it an occupation to play on such organ? please let me know

  • I can't even describe how much I love this.

  • LOLOLOLOL

  • David morecraft calliope

  • well, one of the whistles is a Morecraft, but the rest of it is a honest-to-goodness Nichol's calliope. That he can make whistles look and sound just like a Nichols only goes to show how good Dave is at his craft!

  • i played it

  • @Angiegirl2112

On what did you play it?

    Are you Rosalinda?

  • uh no =/

  • @Angiegirl2112 Yeah right.

  • Awesome!

  • I think it's al jolson's waiting for robert e lee.

  • Yep, that's correct.

  • Comment removed

  • It just makes me start crying, but thank you.

  • waiting for the Robert e lee

  • The Calliope on the Delt Queen actually was on the Water Queen which was part of a Hollywood silent film "Stage Struck" which was filmed in my home town here in New Martinsville WV

  • I care!

  • OUTSTANDING!!

  • very cool

  • is it me or at 1:58 is someone shouting out something about titties??! =[]

  • No! This was a friendly yearly contest between the two boats. He was telling her her music sounded like Kiddy stuff. It was all clean and Family friendly.

If I'd known how much that would be mis-heard, I would have edited the sound track just a little before posting it.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  • @Peabody182 yea! they said that's "titty stuff" WTF!

  • @Peabody182 Waiting on the robert e lee is a jazz song

  • Hijack,

thank you very much for recording and posting this unique piece of human culture!

  • More from New Zealand. Up close and personal the calliope has black smoke and lots of soot. And of course the smell. I have a certificate as a player of the scales. If anyone gets a chance to get close to such experiences take it. The memories will last a lifetime.

  • My wife and I and a small party of New Zealanders were privileged to be part of the New Orleans to St Louis Great Steamboat Race of 2005. The Delata Queen won. Rosalind also was a wonderful pianist and played Scott Joplin for me many times during mealtimes. What memories.

  • I have never seen a steam operated one. The littel puffs were cool! I feel like Mark Twain is somewhere chuckling...

  • Does anyone know how to contact Rosalinda DeLeon ?

  • I would try to see if you can still get ahold of any one at the Delta Queens company or what ever they call it now.

You could try goggleing the "Delta Queen Hotel" since that is what it is right now.

  • That's Amazing!

  • Good camera work, good sound. Thanks for documenting something few of us will ever see in person.

  • man, i think calliopes are possibly the coolest thing ever. i always picture a man in a top hat and a long twisty mustache playing them :D

  • we have a small calliope that is in the back of a pickup truck so tommarrow were gonna take it through a parade

  • What fun!

  • Not exactly fun, because when you stand next to it it's deafening.

  • Good stuff! They are playing Waiting for the Robert E. Lee and the famous Looney Toons song The Merry Go Round Broke Down.

  • When were calliopes popular?

  • same era as steam ships, and they weren't really popular, just a novelty.

  • So whats the deal on the Queen? last I herd it was a lost cause? is the calliope still in working order? will it ever?

  • The Delta Queen is the only one that might still have a chance at cruising. She is leased to a compamy that has her in Chatanooga, TN as a floating Hotel. The conditions were that she not be changed in any way. She must remain as is. There are buyers interested in sailing her. So, she could yet make it.

The Mississippi Queen is gutted. What remains is tied up in New Orleans. The American Queen is tied up next to her.

No way is seen that either one of them will ever cruise again.

  • can you add the rest?

  • I do have the last round of the DQ. She was competing against the American Queen in that years race. I will work on adding round 3 of the DQ. The player on the AQ was good, but didn't stand a chance against Rosalinda. She was the best I've ever heard. I also have the 3 rounds the AQ played. Maybe I can get them up some day.

  • AHH! XD That's so awesome!

  • What is the name of the song?

  • Sorry, I never knew what all they played.

Some one in one of the older comments knew and named, several, or maybe all the songs she played. You might be able to find it.

  • waiting for the robert e lee

not sure about the second one

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you alot.

  • which is excruciatingly difficult to play on two and one half octaves.

  • Thank you

  • Waiting for the Robert E. Lee

    and

When the Merry Go Round Fell Down

  • Thanks. If I has time I might learn them.

  • That was amazing.

  • are you kidding me?? the guy was obviously cheering because she did an amazing job...i mean seriously it sounded awesome!

  • Awesome playing, and great sounding calliope! That drunk idiot yelling at the end? Someone push him into the river, please.

  • A little explantion is in order. These clips were part of a contest between the Delta Queen and the American Queen at the start of their annual Steam boat race. They each took turns playing a round. 6 rounds were played in all. What you are hearing is each calliope player kidding each other at the end of the round. The American Queen player wasn't saying anything bad, but I was concerned that what he said could have sounded like something worse. They all did stay clean in their talk.

  • Well, that makes better sense now. Personally, I couldn't hold a candle to this playing. In this era of overproduced entertainment and lipsyncing, people lose sight of how difficult live playing is. Thanks for posting!

  • This is awesome I got interested in calliope after listening to the Beatles' song "Being For The Benefit Of Mr.Kite" from Sgt Pepper.I read about it,and I find it quite astonishing.

  • AAAHHH. Robert E. Lee, Good Choice

  • it is the perfect calliope song.

  • yep... Or on a Seeburg Nick-o

  • why's that?

  • Tomorrow (4th) I will be going to say farewell to this majestic Queen in Natchez, Mississippi. It will truly be a sad day.

  • God save the Delta Queen! And a very special thanks too Minnesota's Senator Jim Oberstar and Hawaiis Senator Daniel K. Inouye For making sure this making sure the Senate will never even get to vote on this exemption.

  • Absolutely WONDERFUL! Thanks to the History Channel for helping making me aware of the effort to SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN!

  • That must be really fun. I've played a regular Tangley CA-43 high-pressure air calliope many times, but I've never played a steam calliope before.

  • THAT WAS OFF THE CHAIN LOVED IT!!

  • That's really cool. Reminds me of Amethystium's calliope.

  • awesome

  • That is AWSOME!!!

  • that is so neat... wish i could see that in real life, but new mexico stupidly doesn't have any riverboats :(

  • MOARRR!!!

  • lovely

  • she played that song when she was leaving pittsburgh on the 10 of may^_^

  • i didn't ride on the Delta queen but i was her rival the Mississippi queen during the steam boat race it was from new Orleans to st lewis back in 2000 glad i did i don't know if they do it any more but it was fun now i want to go back and ride on the delta queen

  • Is there nothing to be done about her being shut down? How sad...This is something truly unique.

  • One bullheaded congress man won't let it out of committe to be voted on. It's going to take the rest of them to force him to do it.

Can they do it? Not known yet.

  • If they all would just ride on the boat...and see for themselves...

  • WOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAW !!!! It is GREAT !!!

  • Waiting for Robert E. Lee!!

wow, I wish I could get on board and sail away. How nice.

  • Oh I loved that and I remember the circus coming to town and walking from the railroad to the circus grds some 16 blks or so and the calliope playing, the elephants pulling wagons with lions in them etc- guess I am getting on! Tnks for the memories (Jimmy Durante-the "Nose" and the best

  • WANT ONE!

  • That was so fun.

  • ahhh good times

  • To bad 2008 is going to be the last year you will she her going up and down the rivers....

I worked on this boat for 2 years and spent 1 on the mississippi queen

  • I just loved this, well done that lass.

  • I worked on the Delta Queen many years ago and while I don't enjoy calliope music, I certainly enjoyed this clip.

  • The Delta Queen is in danger of being shut down forever due to the Safety at Sea Law. The law does not even apply well to vessels on inland waterways. It's time to write your congressmen to help save the Delta Queen while there is still time.

  • It always stops in havana IL, my home town. but when the music starts her paddals are spinning really fast, since its shallow and we dont have a dock just poles to tie the ropes to, and it freaks out the asian carp and a woman got hit by one and it fractured her arm!

  • Oh, this brings tears to my eyes, they want to scuttle to the Queen... because of the 1966 Safety of Life at Sea Law (Public Law 89-777). Her exemption is up... go to steamboat . org and sign the petition to keep the Queen floating... GOD SAVE THE QUEEn

  • Very nice! Where was the Delta Queen when this was recorded? I've heard its calliope in Cincinnati and Covington, KY as well as in Paducah and at KY Dam.

  • We were at the beginning of the "2006 Great Steamboat Race". We were at Baton Rouge, LA because we couldn't yet go back to New Orleans.

This clip was part of the "Calliope Play Off" between the Delta Queen and the Mississippi Queen.

As you can probably tell from the quality of the DQ player, they beat the Mississippi Queen Bad.

  • our ochestra and band is teaming up together and playing this song, even though no offence it will sound a lot better than this.

  • Hey, when you're on a steam powered paddle wheeler, floating on the Mississippi River, nothing sounds better then a Steam Colliope.

I would like to hear your version. Let me know how I can do that.

    HiJack

  • my band is playing this too but it is a little different and a little lot better!! lol

  • HAY! my band is playing that song!!!

  • omg me 2

  • That is AWSOME!!! Thank you so much for taking time to upload that! That is an awsome sounding calliope!

  • Thanks for the info. I totally failed in my answer above. I have several clips and I forgot which one I posted.

  • Awesome video. Does anyone happen to know the name of this song?

  • She played several songs on this go around.

I might be able to figure out some of them.

Which one did you want to know about?

  • this one

  • "Waiting For the Robert E. Lee" is the tune played. She concludes it with "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" aka. "The Looney-Toons Theme". Very nice sounding calliope!

  • A noble endeavour indeed. Thank you for this video.

  • I love the old calliope music. 'Tis difficult to believe that those days are so bygone!

  • They are alive and well on all three Steam boats still cruising. The Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen and the American Queen.

  • Comment removed

  • The calliope player you are hearing here is Rosalinda DeLeon who also is the piano player aboard the vessel. We have worked together almost 2 years now and she is the greatest!
