Check back on some of the comments. All is well. It was a contest between the 2 boats. The voice you heard was from the other player. They were ribbing each other. She did win the contest.
the more often you use a single whistle, the hotter it stays, the less condensation you have in the whistles, the better is the tone.
Any big steamwhistle has the problem that the first thing that comes out when you pull the line, is a shower of water that has condensed in the long pipe from the boiler to the whistle. Then follows a sound like a walrus coughing which slowly becomes somewhat melodic.
i'VE PLAYED THE CALLIOPE BEFORE. My name is Matthew Mason and I am 10 years old and i've been to Chattanooga to play that calliope. it was awesome! I got to meet the owner Maura Phillips.
Hello! I think this is a great video! On November 4, there will be a Delta Queen/Southern Belle/Cincinnati Belle riverboat calliope concert here in Chattanooga on the Tennessee River. I am writing a blog tour of Delta Queen in honor of the event and hope you don't mind if I link this video to it! After the event, I might have a great calliope video to post.
I really wish I could get more. The only way it might done now is to find where it is in TN being used as a Hotel, rent a room, and hope they still fire up the Calliope.
@HiJack1313 The steam is still up on the boat and the calliope was played up untill November when it started getting too cold to keep the lines with steam. She will play again in the sring. Come and visit and hear her sing.
I gotta weigh in on this. This lady is the best Calliope player I ever heard. She has three nice sets organized, and she avoids what I call "the dodo bird" accompaniment in the left hand and plays real harmony. This particular set has some nice diminished 7ths and augmented 6ths (I think). She varries the tempo from piece to piece which makes it interesting. And the glissando at the end and the nice cadence is fantastic! The sight of the pipes during the glissando is really neat!
well, one of the whistles is a Morecraft, but the rest of it is a honest-to-goodness Nichol's calliope. That he can make whistles look and sound just like a Nichols only goes to show how good Dave is at his craft!
The Calliope on the Delt Queen actually was on the Water Queen which was part of a Hollywood silent film "Stage Struck" which was filmed in my home town here in New Martinsville WV
No! This was a friendly yearly contest between the two boats. He was telling her her music sounded like Kiddy stuff. It was all clean and Family friendly.
If I'd known how much that would be mis-heard, I would have edited the sound track just a little before posting it.
More from New Zealand. Up close and personal the calliope has black smoke and lots of soot. And of course the smell. I have a certificate as a player of the scales. If anyone gets a chance to get close to such experiences take it. The memories will last a lifetime.
My wife and I and a small party of New Zealanders were privileged to be part of the New Orleans to St Louis Great Steamboat Race of 2005. The Delata Queen won. Rosalind also was a wonderful pianist and played Scott Joplin for me many times during mealtimes. What memories.
The Delta Queen is the only one that might still have a chance at cruising. She is leased to a compamy that has her in Chatanooga, TN as a floating Hotel. The conditions were that she not be changed in any way. She must remain as is. There are buyers interested in sailing her. So, she could yet make it.
The Mississippi Queen is gutted. What remains is tied up in New Orleans. The American Queen is tied up next to her.
No way is seen that either one of them will ever cruise again.
I do have the last round of the DQ. She was competing against the American Queen in that years race. I will work on adding round 3 of the DQ. The player on the AQ was good, but didn't stand a chance against Rosalinda. She was the best I've ever heard. I also have the 3 rounds the AQ played. Maybe I can get them up some day.
A little explantion is in order. These clips were part of a contest between the Delta Queen and the American Queen at the start of their annual Steam boat race. They each took turns playing a round. 6 rounds were played in all. What you are hearing is each calliope player kidding each other at the end of the round. The American Queen player wasn't saying anything bad, but I was concerned that what he said could have sounded like something worse. They all did stay clean in their talk.
Well, that makes better sense now. Personally, I couldn't hold a candle to this playing. In this era of overproduced entertainment and lipsyncing, people lose sight of how difficult live playing is. Thanks for posting!
This is awesome I got interested in calliope after listening to the Beatles' song "Being For The Benefit Of Mr.Kite" from Sgt Pepper.I read about it,and I find it quite astonishing.

I had a Music company contact me. They were interested in getting her to help them make some Calliope music. She couldn't be found any where.
Maybe she checks in here once in awhile.
Or, maybe she already works for another company that wants to keep her a secret. 8:)
