  • As everybody else is saying... You rule. =) Suscribing.

  • I recently subscribed to you (like 10 minutes ago) because of your response to Alex's Pottermore video. Then I started watching more of your videos and I just kept getting happier and happier that I'd subscribed. So thanks for being totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well, this is ignoring all science and english classes, but yeah, in all other places it is true.

Science classes are designed teach you procedural knowledge as well as factual knowledge.

English classes teach you factual knowledge that gets used as a tool in writing coherently.

Math teaches only facts, but those facts are necessary as a basis for most professions.

Everything else is much less necessary.

  • "A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing"

Oscar Wilde's quote seems to describe the essence of the stock market, yes?

  • You sir, are full of win.

  • wow, this guy is good.

    Love him already

  • dan dident write the davinchi series

  • @bjarkepihl REALLY?!?!?

  • Cool, exactly 20,000 views!

  • This is indeed the first video of yours that I have watched and needless to say, you have one more subscriber.

  • You are amazing!!! :D

  • Coolest dude on youtube o.o

  • @Softcloner Thanks so much.

  • I'm so glad I clicked on your response. Subscribed!

  • Brilliant!

  • the price of a degree has gone up...not sure about the price of information...

  • heh =).

  • You're so smart. You make me want to stay in school.

  • i like your hat.

  • This is great! Keep up the good work! :)

  • dude, you're awesome! keep posting please! very interesting approach and I love how well-developed this video is.

  • awesome

  • I came because of Dan Brown, i stayed for intelligent jokes from a wise man :) you're pretty awesome Mickeleh

  • You're a badass.. subbed and thumbs up. :D

  • i love the point that the value of information went up but the price of information went down, i thought that was a great point that dan frogot to mention.

  • i'm felling so fucking dumb

  • Thumbs up for the Noob =) Subbed!

  • this shit is deep yo

  • he said "monetary value" in his video

  • CUE OSCAR WILDE. Very nice.

  • You call yourself a noob!?!?

DUDE, YOU'RE ONE COOL OLD PERSON

  • subscribed

  • very interesting and relevent :)

  • Green halo.

  • Most of us are slaves to the prevailing winds. You often year people state popular opinions boldly, but when you ask them to supply reasons for their beliefs, they can't. Education, at its heart, is not about memorizing facts, and it's not about indoctrination. It's about learning to think for yourself so you can be yourself.

  • @garyfromwv40

    Yeah. i agree.

  • That was a wicked impresonation of Tom. I'm suprised that he still talks to you. LOL In any event, I appreciate what you said about education. Seems a lot of people don't understand the importance of education. One of my philosophy profs in college explained that the purpose of a liberal arts education was to help the student think for him/herself by training the student to examine culture in a critical way.

  • Wow I really like your rebuttal, I didn't really have enough knowledge of history myself to argue much, so thank you for educating us.

  • This is one kick ass old man...

  • When you don't make eye contact with the camera...so hard to concentrate on what your saying...Sorry ocd.

  • I definitely think you brought up a good point, about value versus price, as well as the point that we can't get information from the internet, if no one is putting it there in the first place. Well done, I think you did a good job of bringing up errors in Dan's original statement, without completely dismissing him.

  • Nice...Ding Dong

  • That taught me a few things. Thank you

  • wooo!

  • Subscribed!

  • noob to master

im the noob, that bootle of vinegar is the master

  • I like your style :D I agree with most of your points here, and it's wonderfully refreshing to hear someone put forward a view nice and straight forward. There is something grammatically wrong with that previous sentence, but I can't pick it, so I apologise for whatever it may be.

  • This is brilliant. Fav.

  • DAN BROWN ROCKS!!!!! Mikalah, go pick on someone your own age. Stop showing off your nerd talk.....^ :(

  • @avaandnewman

dude show some respect! dont be a zombie, or, rather, a mindless slave to modern-day media, no offense, but, let people express their opinion

  • This guy should do the voice acting for a king in a video game.

  • I heard of you from Dan Brown, who I heard from thunderfOOt, but of the 3... You are the only one subbed, and just from this vid. Well done sir. I look forward to reviewing and discussing your other material. Cheers.

  • I think dan ment that kings had access to all information, not nessecarily knowing it. Well, not all of course, but alot. And kings back inn the day did more than to wave.

  • @Daevas88 I really wanted to make that joke.

  • @mickeleh sure, and your totally free to do so, but I'm just saying;) and inn this age kings normally don't do much more than to simply wave. Inn my country he attends to one meeting though, where he signs the new laws, but I don't really think he has too much to say inn regards to it, as the politicians have allready more or less decided that those changes are happening. If he refuses on them he will probably be reduced to just a stature figure, which has happened inn several countries.

  • @mickeleh , subscribe subscribe subscribe subscribe.

  • subscribed :)

  • I usually don't subscribe on a whim . . . but your video brought me this close ||

See that, see how I put the lines a pixel or so apart, yeah I thought that was clever.

But yeah, very interesting stuff. Educational and entertaining. I'm gonna check out more of your videos. Keep up the good work.

  • I subbed :)

  • yeah, FYI, it isn't the same guy who wrote those books (a fact Dan from YT has said times and times again) but I otherwise appreciate the *Value* of this response, mickeleh

  • Mikeleh, I appreciate your take. Since many schools in my city have recently been threatened to be closed, I have reconsidered Dan Brown's argument and I found that you and I have the same views. The value of information HAS gone down, and not just price-wise. Though Dan usually does make great points, this was not one of his better arguments.

  • Agreed on kings haveing info.

Most medival European kings coudnt read or write, they just had their charts and planned with generals how to conquer more land. or with advisiors how to raise money for the kingdom

  • Epic win :) I think I shall subscribe.

  • The Internet is changing the way some learn. Have you seen the Khan Academy on Youtube? Many people are using that in addition to MITOpenCourseWare, YouTubeEDU, teach12(dot)com, and iTunes University to get free or affordable help. Some students are using these to prepare for AP exams to accumulate college credit. However, I disagree with Dan Brown's oversimplification of school being a place to memorize facts. There's more to it than that, and perhaps his misunderstanding is why he dropped out.

  • Is it just my education which is about learning facts AND applying them? Maybe it's a UK thing!

But well said, it's refreshing to know there are some people who do have brains out there.

  • well said.

  • Part 2 of my comment...

I just wanted to add that I think your opinion and Dan Brown's are very similar. Also I just wanted to say that I subscribed to you because of this vid and this discussion is why the internet is so great.

  • This is a fantastic vid and I understand and respect what your saying. But I also respect and understand what Dan Brown says to. Dan Brown is right when he says that the 'tests' at school are all about memorising facts. It doesn't matter whether or not someone said this before him, it's still a valid point. Also I understand what he's saying when he says the value of information has gone down and about monarchy owning information but you have rightly stated that he has explained this wrong.

  • @Macrosoftech I agree. The classroom routine that Dan describes is one that I would find horrendous. If education is limited to memorizing rote facts, it's no better than training lab rats to run mazes. On other hand, an education that is built without a foundation in facts just a flimsy parade of opinions. I think the answer is to find the balance.

  • @mickeleh I agree. There is only one class I can conceive that demands students only memorise facts and that is a first year class, it would do it so the basic necessary information is established before moving on. I may be biased, (my degree is creative industries) but even friends of mine in engineering or IT are finding practical applications for the raw facts they have accumulated and the content they create is what is assessed. I just hate Dan's oversimplification of a university education.

  • @Macrosoftech

I'd be interested to know your educational background for this viewpoint. At 'school', a large amount of time is reciting knowledge verbatim. It's like walking before you can run.

At University, time is spent understanding principles that can then be applied to problems with critical thought to solve a problem.

Universities teach people to THINK. If simple recitation was enough for our society, there would be no benefit in expanding the knowledgebase of humanity. We'd be stagnant.

  • Great retort! Very nice!

  • Hi.I followed the debate on education closely. I agree with you on the difference between value and price, information is still really valuable yet cheap. But I do desagree on some points:

-Kings did not only know how to wave and how to raise taxes. They were educated people who were taught about geopolitc of course, but also as Louis XVI, in astronomy and loads of other stuff.

-The Internet2.0 do connect people, but the first aim of the Internet.0 was indeed to ease the access to knowledge. Bye

  • Dan Brown OWNED.

  • yes, but kings knew how to read, write, and hire people to do tasks they didn't nkow how to do. i feel their differnt types of knowledge 1) working knowledge - meaning info u know about ur profession and 2) wide/broader knowledge - meaning thoose facts "smart people" know ex: who was the first prime minister of Canada

  • I still agree with dan but wow this is an awesome video. he has a skill for making videos and has a flat out likable attitude. Also, even tho i agree with dan, still great points. 5 stars!

  • raised some valid points, i think this is great, just what youtube is missing

  • No but the thing is, Dan brown was primarily talking about the access of education and i belive u make a good point but the thing is, the king could learn anything he wanted to that the middle class could. The king was the highest point on the hierarchy if u exclude religeous hierarchy well then he wasnt as much but that wont stop a king if he wants to find out information. he could question anyone and they would have to teach him.

  • Dang!

    way better than thunderf00ts vid!

like some others, i did'nt agree with it, but i luved the way you argued about it

    I might subscribe. :D

  • hhaha i like you. thank for being so respectful.

  • Dan Brown: Just got served.

  • I love Dan Brown and all...

But this video is awesome, and made me think a lot more than the Open Letter to Educators. Dan Brown's video sort of made me, the inner student inside me, at least, go "Hey yeah down with the schools and educational establishments!!!". Which, of course, is not Dan Brown's fault because he did not mean this, but of course it is a large flaw that it blinded my common sense and reasoning.

However this video actually helped the thinker inside me...

    Bravo!

  • kings didnt know that kind of information by heart, but they had access to information

  • agree with everything so far..but i think what he ment about the king is that the king had i guess the power and resources (libraries..access to church ect) to learn what he wanted..i guess a king could have been given the knowledge from trades if its what he wanted. But for commoners u get what ur given..family trades..apprentiships in the area..

  • WOW! Thanks so much for this! I am sooo happy to see that there are people out there with common sense!

  • this is worthy of a subscription.

  • subscribed :)

  • I agree with a part of both arguments. I think Dan as right about that most are trying less in lessons and at work because they can google what they need. But that is because google makes it possible to connect with the more intelligent people with the information. As this is happening more and more, more people will deicide that learning is not every important, although it would be even more important. As more people will rely on smart people to tell then the answers thought the internet.

  • Very good points brought up. I too was curious he didn't mention the church and was confused when he talked about the king having all the knowledge. However I can not be assed giving my thoughts as I am currently too busy ingesting facts that i will never need ready to be vomited out onto paper over the course of two hours on friday.

  • you should change your name to Robert De Niro

  • @eatmylol3 Um, isn't that name taken?

  • toke shit much

  • Subbed, excellent!

  • Dan brown did clear up that part about value, he said the monetary value of info is fast approaching $0. Of course, you do hold a valid point about the fact that someone has to put those facts up on the internet, and that it is more important to be able to sort out the valuable information from the worthless misinformation. Some of the Newest info though still has a high monetary price.

  • I remember reading a passage in Hard Times as part of an English lesson. Facts, FACTS, FACTS! (or something like that) I remember that passage now after this video.

  • Very good constructive response, compared to Thunderf00t.

  • you remind me of doctor emmet brown from back to the future!

  • Mickeleh, firstly I've sub'd as that was one of the best done combinations of humour with explanations I've seen on the tube!

As for the Education discussion, I like your point that all the information made up on Google is as a direct result of human knowledge; equally though, we have to acknowledge that the university and secondary school system of learning needs to better understand these available techonology and perhaps adapt their system of learning as per Dickens.

    Stupid lack of characte

  • I heard of you through Dan Brown's Channel.

    Nice response, Im subbing.

    -Frisco the Navajo

  • very good response. subscriped!

  • My great intellectual history teacher used to say it isn't the quantity of choices you have (think "google") but the ability to choose the good (i.e. right one).

  • wow. you are way better than thunderfoot!

    good work

  • Exactly right, especially about the "Price vs. Value." And that education is changing, as a teacher I know there are already countless books written on how to revolutionize and modernize education, those books are the reason kids sit in circles and ideas are discussed instead of just preached now; the new technologies can extend this for hundreds of thousands of miles. The communicative approach is a little harder in colleges, but they're getting there with tutorials and study groups and clubs.

  • Hmm, after watching this... *Subscribed*

  • me too lmao

  • Mickeleh, this is the first video by you that I've seen. I am very impressed and interested. I subscribed.

  • Oh my word, that was wonderful. I've been following this whole discussion about Dan Brown's open letter and your response is the only one I found bearable enough to watch all the way through. Not only did you make very good points but you remained polite and calm, something other response videos have lacked. Great job!

  • agreed 100% to me someone that remains calm even through hard time, is just a little bit smarter than someone who wastes their time getting mad because it doesn't help anyone or the situation in the end.

  • i wonder, whats the value of learning things that noone else knows?

  • I don't exactly agree with you, but It was good argument. :) I subscribed. Oh, and TAKE ME TO VIDCON!

  • Woooo you rock! You said everything I wanted to better than I could have said it!

And you are so not a n00b

  • @electricbubbles Thanks. (And shhh. Don't give away my secret)

  • is his name isreali or yiddish

  • @providence36 My given name is Michael. I picked Mickeleh as an internet identity because there are so many, many Michaels in the world. Mickeleh is a yiddish-sounding diminution of Michael. (in the fashion of Spanish Miguelito for Miguel). And nobody was using it.

  • Good responce

  • dan brown OWNAGE!

  • I was just surfing the dan brown's video about something of replying to a hot topic. He usually manipulates things but I liked this time. He got me to know you and this is a great thing.

Loved your response to an open letters to educators. I'm subscribing to your channel and see what is all this about.

  • I have enjoyed your fair responses to Dan. Very different from Tf00t. I'm glad that you recognized what he Dan actually likely meant though it may have come out wrong. eg the price vs. value thing.

  • I definitely agree with Dan about how education should change but I almost fell out of my chair when you seemed to read my thoughts, "Easier said than done." Dan is very amazing with his whole concept on community which is one of the reasons I like him, but I do believe he should have researched a bit more before posting his video. I'm in a private highschool so the vids don't concern me much. It's still important. I believe an important part of education is learning how to learn yourself.

  • Search engine optimization has made finding information even harder. As long as the world is changing, people who are out to get money will change faster than anyone else to make money off of it. I do a lot of freelancing, and a lot of people are willing to pay someone else crap to write articles with SEO and then make someone's Google search crap. It's complicated, I think.

  • Also, because of the Internet, anyone can have access to information that is of zero value to them; I believe this is partly what Dan Brown is trying to convey to us. Your notion on "price" and "value", however, is still very strong and provided us with insight that Dan had failed to provide.

I am appalled by Dan Brown's educational experiences which has caused him to become partly biased, but regardless he has sparked a spectacular movement that may one day become monumental to the world.

  • I'm really glad that this video clears up some ambiguity behind Dan's notions. I have some thoughts about some of your points though...

There's a connection between knowledge and power, and your take on the king's knowledge has convinced me that the king did not have all of the power. Yet, the king had lots of powers that no one else had, and so the knowledge that he did possess was particularly very valuable.

  • Great Point.

  • i think what he meant about Kings having all the information was political information like on world affairs if there ever was any... like that there was a war and what is was about and what is being done. I think Dan brown made a good arguement he just worded things in broad way.

  • Beautiful. I love this response, and completely agree with you.

  • Much better than thunderfoots because you entertained his thoughts and did not act like such a superior being, and you had much, much better points summed up in 3 mins.

  • @1Lemmen1 Thanks. I appreciate it.

  • Mickeleh and Thunderfoot both have great responses, but I think I like Mickeleh's better. For one thing, he made his opinion a little more simple (I'm only thirteen, I can follow along with Dan alright, but Thunder was a little harder for some reason idk) and Mickeleh's video didin't sound like he was ready to shoot Dan in the face. Did you see Thunderfoot's video? He looks seriously TOed... =/

  • Subscribed, I feel that your response to Dan was well thought out and I hope to see your insight and knowledge on topics to be presented later.

  • @Mickeleh Good choice of wording. and I absolutely love how you are being respectful and polite about everything you say. I agree with most if not all of what you said in this video and good luck to you.

  • If only everyone could disagree like mickeleh

  • NOOB!

  • I think, slightly, that he was ranting a bit, Danbrown that is, without perfect thought, but he did have good points, and I liked yours as well *Pushes the yellow button*

  • @DkTankCudds Dispenses pellet of yummy food to reinforce good behavior

  • Very well put and a good argument in response to Dan's video. I am still in the process of deciding what I think about all this since a lot of good points have been brought up.

  • @chemistryflavored Me too. I'm learning a lot from reading the comments. This is really a large and complex issue that will not be fully addressed in a 4-minute video. or even a series of them. But bit by bit, I'm learning.

  • You're awesome.

  • An AMAZING response.

  • not impressed

  • @CAlex6977 Not depressed.

  • what a guy!!!

  • this one was by far one of the best videos I watch here and I want more.

  • @OMARANGEL Thanks. Working on more.

  • subscribed

  • i compeletely believe what you are saying! best video response.

  • *Redirected here from the DB playlist

I do agree that having that information is important because it has "freed" the info that people want. I also agree that you need more than just that info.

What I think this is about is the useless info that can and will appear in the classes that most people take and the true value in educating comes from the ability of the teacher to not give us the fact but show us how to use the fact.

Anyway, great vid and worth the watch.

    *Now continuing the playlist

  • haha, that was a terrific response. kudos to you mickeleh.

  • @mickeleh

I must say I agree with you point whole heartedly. Thank you very much for this video because it said everything I couldn't in comments due to one not have a video camera.... I'ma broke putty tat.... and the word limit for written comments on videos. Thank you again

  • 100% truth all topics. IMHO Dan Brown is/was on a wrong educational path, it happens to lots of people, i've been on a technical college in europe (i'm european) and power to creativity and boost new ideias, even with low money resources (Yes Dan, developing and creating information COSTS) was there, I believe more textual colleges (Legal, historical, etc)would kill me to boredom, but there are minds for everything,, i've choosen the right one, Dan choose the wrong and he is pissed... Just sayin

  • Great response!

  • Great response. I like how you said your opinion while still being kind and respectful to Dan.

A lot of people forget that you can disagree with something without being a jerk about it. Thunderf00t had a few good points, but he was unbelievably condescending about it.

  • ANNNNNNDDDD subscribe.

  • very interesting stuff. I think pogobat still has some valid points, but his argument has problems and your video did an excellent job of showing some of them.

  • Another point that I would like to bring up in Dan Brown's video is that more information is going to the internet. This is true but this does not degrade the value of universities like you implied. Schools teach the practice of these "facts" and practice makes perfect.

  • In Dan's video, he said the 'monetary value,' not general value.

  • Wrong. Kings had access to money to access knowledge. The peasant folk had access to very specific info related to their jobs, but that's it. Dan is totally right to assume Kings, nobles, advisors had access to info that the peasants couldn't hope to gain because they had the money and time to learn instead of working.

  • @mickeleh

LOL! I never thought about that, Pogobat having the same name as the Da Vinci author!

I wonder what the author thinks of this younger Dan Brown...

  • thank you for vocalizing everything i wanted to say but couldn't articulate.

  • Lol! You're a really funny guy! Thanks for the upload. You told him.

  • @mickeleh

I just want to say, this is the first of your videos that I have seen, and I am EXTREMELY impressed. I agree 100% with everything you said. I look forward to watching other videos of yours.

  • For the rest, i agree, information value is still high, just the cost of it is gone down, and yes, internet is very helpful to contact, and talk to people you would never know, like now, your.. 80+, and i'm 14

  • @thedarkm96 Pleased to meet you, but I don't expect to be 80+ before you're 30+. (I knew I should never have gone HD.)

  • I think this is the best response to dans video, your not saying bad things about him, just stating facts. I'm still on dans side though, but of all you said i only have one comment, that kings did have knowledge, they knew all the secrets in the castle, and the village, they knew all about money and where it was spent in the kingdom, and when the church came in, they became more powerful then the king, and thats why they had all the information.

  • @thedarkm96 Thanks so much.

  • Better response than Thunderf00ts.

  • @Thandi123 Kinder and funnier, anyway. Thanks.

  • Excellent reply. As an educator I have been following this debate very closely and it is interesting to note that schools are asbolutely FRANTIC with talk about modernizing curriculum, 21st century skills, technology, and innovation without much talk about HOW to accomplish these spectacular goals. I have found its is the innovative skill of the teacher who is called upon to interact with students in a meaningful way on a daily basis that makes the most difference. (cont.)

  • Teachers need to be willing and able to find ways to improve while working within the system - I need more colleagues who are dedicated to the profession and its improvement.

  • @odinsraven1000 @odinsraven1000 Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I don't think think we can overstate the importance of great, creative teachers. Looking back on my own school and university experience I have been lucky to have about a dozen teachers who are still with me every day. Not just what they taught, but their presence, their love of the subject matter, and their joy in learning. 1 second ago

  • @mickeleh

Exactly, as a future art teacher, I also followed this debate pretty closely and I think Dan Brown was just blindsighted and biased by the bad education experience he had. (excuse any mistakes, English is my second language)

  • I don't often comment on the same user's videos multiple times in one day, but you are too cool not to. You think before you talk (well, it's either that or you know a heck of a lot more than I do, which is also very probable considering I'm only a senior in high school), and have an interesting perspective on everything. Consider a 5 star and a new subscriber the reward for such thought. (...wow, I sound a bit pretentious, don't I? :P) DFTBA

  • @makerofshoes1 I appreciate your comment very much. I did put a lot of thought into this. What I worked hardest on was finding the tone where I could vigorously disagree with Dan without devaluing or discounting how much he's accomplished in creating a presence on YouTube.

    Very happy you subscribed.

  • Curiosity: What is your formal education? And how has that changed since you were a formal student?

  • I completed a bachelor's degree. Had some post-grad, but did not complete an advanced degree. I'm not sure what the second question means. Are you asking if my education ended after graduation? If so, I'm pretty sure I have.

  • I never thought I'd see an old man say "n00b" :-)

  • very great response!

  • hah you rock mickeleh, definitely had to subscribe

  • Thanks so much.

  • I find that your take hilighted Dan's point in a different light, which is great, so I rate 5* and favourite :)
