I recently subscribed to you (like 10 minutes ago) because of your response to Alex's Pottermore video. Then I started watching more of your videos and I just kept getting happier and happier that I'd subscribed. So thanks for being totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!
i love the point that the value of information went up but the price of information went down, i thought that was a great point that dan frogot to mention.
Most of us are slaves to the prevailing winds. You often year people state popular opinions boldly, but when you ask them to supply reasons for their beliefs, they can't. Education, at its heart, is not about memorizing facts, and it's not about indoctrination. It's about learning to think for yourself so you can be yourself.
That was a wicked impresonation of Tom. I'm suprised that he still talks to you. LOL In any event, I appreciate what you said about education. Seems a lot of people don't understand the importance of education. One of my philosophy profs in college explained that the purpose of a liberal arts education was to help the student think for him/herself by training the student to examine culture in a critical way.
I definitely think you brought up a good point, about value versus price, as well as the point that we can't get information from the internet, if no one is putting it there in the first place. Well done, I think you did a good job of bringing up errors in Dan's original statement, without completely dismissing him.

yes, but kings knew how to read, write, and hire people to do tasks they didn't nkow how to do. i feel their differnt types of knowledge 1) working knowledge - meaning info u know about ur profession and 2) wide/broader knowledge - meaning thoose facts "smart people" know ex: who was the first prime minister of Canada
I still agree with dan but wow this is an awesome video. he has a skill for making videos and has a flat out likable attitude. Also, even tho i agree with dan, still great points. 5 stars!
No but the thing is, Dan brown was primarily talking about the access of education and i belive u make a good point but the thing is, the king could learn anything he wanted to that the middle class could. The king was the highest point on the hierarchy if u exclude religeous hierarchy well then he wasnt as much but that wont stop a king if he wants to find out information. he could question anyone and they would have to teach him.
But this video is awesome, and made me think a lot more than the Open Letter to Educators. Dan Brown's video sort of made me, the inner student inside me, at least, go "Hey yeah down with the schools and educational establishments!!!". Which, of course, is not Dan Brown's fault because he did not mean this, but of course it is a large flaw that it blinded my common sense and reasoning.
However this video actually helped the thinker inside me...
agree with everything so far..but i think what he ment about the king is that the king had i guess the power and resources (libraries..access to church ect) to learn what he wanted..i guess a king could have been given the knowledge from trades if its what he wanted. But for commoners u get what ur given..family trades..apprentiships in the area..
I agree with a part of both arguments. I think Dan as right about that most are trying less in lessons and at work because they can google what they need. But that is because google makes it possible to connect with the more intelligent people with the information. As this is happening more and more, more people will deicide that learning is not every important, although it would be even more important. As more people will rely on smart people to tell then the answers thought the internet.
Very good points brought up. I too was curious he didn't mention the church and was confused when he talked about the king having all the knowledge. However I can not be assed giving my thoughts as I am currently too busy ingesting facts that i will never need ready to be vomited out onto paper over the course of two hours on friday.
Dan brown did clear up that part about value, he said the monetary value of info is fast approaching $0. Of course, you do hold a valid point about the fact that someone has to put those facts up on the internet, and that it is more important to be able to sort out the valuable information from the worthless misinformation. Some of the Newest info though still has a high monetary price.
I remember reading a passage in Hard Times as part of an English lesson. Facts, FACTS, FACTS! (or something like that) I remember that passage now after this video.
Mickeleh, firstly I've sub'd as that was one of the best done combinations of humour with explanations I've seen on the tube!
As for the Education discussion, I like your point that all the information made up on Google is as a direct result of human knowledge; equally though, we have to acknowledge that the university and secondary school system of learning needs to better understand these available techonology and perhaps adapt their system of learning as per Dickens.
My great intellectual history teacher used to say it isn't the quantity of choices you have (think "google") but the ability to choose the good (i.e. right one).
Exactly right, especially about the "Price vs. Value." And that education is changing, as a teacher I know there are already countless books written on how to revolutionize and modernize education, those books are the reason kids sit in circles and ideas are discussed instead of just preached now; the new technologies can extend this for hundreds of thousands of miles. The communicative approach is a little harder in colleges, but they're getting there with tutorials and study groups and clubs.
Oh my word, that was wonderful. I've been following this whole discussion about Dan Brown's open letter and your response is the only one I found bearable enough to watch all the way through. Not only did you make very good points but you remained polite and calm, something other response videos have lacked. Great job!
agreed 100% to me someone that remains calm even through hard time, is just a little bit smarter than someone who wastes their time getting mad because it doesn't help anyone or the situation in the end.
@providence36 My given name is Michael. I picked Mickeleh as an internet identity because there are so many, many Michaels in the world. Mickeleh is a yiddish-sounding diminution of Michael. (in the fashion of Spanish Miguelito for Miguel). And nobody was using it.
I was just surfing the dan brown's video about something of replying to a hot topic. He usually manipulates things but I liked this time. He got me to know you and this is a great thing.
Loved your response to an open letters to educators. I'm subscribing to your channel and see what is all this about.
I have enjoyed your fair responses to Dan. Very different from Tf00t. I'm glad that you recognized what he Dan actually likely meant though it may have come out wrong. eg the price vs. value thing.
I definitely agree with Dan about how education should change but I almost fell out of my chair when you seemed to read my thoughts, "Easier said than done." Dan is very amazing with his whole concept on community which is one of the reasons I like him, but I do believe he should have researched a bit more before posting his video. I'm in a private highschool so the vids don't concern me much. It's still important. I believe an important part of education is learning how to learn yourself.
Search engine optimization has made finding information even harder. As long as the world is changing, people who are out to get money will change faster than anyone else to make money off of it. I do a lot of freelancing, and a lot of people are willing to pay someone else crap to write articles with SEO and then make someone's Google search crap. It's complicated, I think.
Also, because of the Internet, anyone can have access to information that is of zero value to them; I believe this is partly what Dan Brown is trying to convey to us. Your notion on "price" and "value", however, is still very strong and provided us with insight that Dan had failed to provide.
I am appalled by Dan Brown's educational experiences which has caused him to become partly biased, but regardless he has sparked a spectacular movement that may one day become monumental to the world.
I'm really glad that this video clears up some ambiguity behind Dan's notions. I have some thoughts about some of your points though...
There's a connection between knowledge and power, and your take on the king's knowledge has convinced me that the king did not have all of the power. Yet, the king had lots of powers that no one else had, and so the knowledge that he did possess was particularly very valuable.
i think what he meant about Kings having all the information was political information like on world affairs if there ever was any... like that there was a war and what is was about and what is being done. I think Dan brown made a good arguement he just worded things in broad way.
Much better than thunderfoots because you entertained his thoughts and did not act like such a superior being, and you had much, much better points summed up in 3 mins.
Mickeleh and Thunderfoot both have great responses, but I think I like Mickeleh's better. For one thing, he made his opinion a little more simple (I'm only thirteen, I can follow along with Dan alright, but Thunder was a little harder for some reason idk) and Mickeleh's video didin't sound like he was ready to shoot Dan in the face. Did you see Thunderfoot's video? He looks seriously TOed... =/
@Mickeleh Good choice of wording. and I absolutely love how you are being respectful and polite about everything you say. I agree with most if not all of what you said in this video and good luck to you.
I think, slightly, that he was ranting a bit, Danbrown that is, without perfect thought, but he did have good points, and I liked yours as well *Pushes the yellow button*
Very well put and a good argument in response to Dan's video. I am still in the process of deciding what I think about all this since a lot of good points have been brought up.
@chemistryflavored Me too. I'm learning a lot from reading the comments. This is really a large and complex issue that will not be fully addressed in a 4-minute video. or even a series of them. But bit by bit, I'm learning.
I do agree that having that information is important because it has "freed" the info that people want. I also agree that you need more than just that info.
What I think this is about is the useless info that can and will appear in the classes that most people take and the true value in educating comes from the ability of the teacher to not give us the fact but show us how to use the fact.
I must say I agree with you point whole heartedly. Thank you very much for this video because it said everything I couldn't in comments due to one not have a video camera.... I'ma broke putty tat.... and the word limit for written comments on videos. Thank you again
100% truth all topics. IMHO Dan Brown is/was on a wrong educational path, it happens to lots of people, i've been on a technical college in europe (i'm european) and power to creativity and boost new ideias, even with low money resources (Yes Dan, developing and creating information COSTS) was there, I believe more textual colleges (Legal, historical, etc)would kill me to boredom, but there are minds for everything,, i've choosen the right one, Dan choose the wrong and he is pissed... Just sayin
Great response. I like how you said your opinion while still being kind and respectful to Dan.
A lot of people forget that you can disagree with something without being a jerk about it. Thunderf00t had a few good points, but he was unbelievably condescending about it.
very interesting stuff. I think pogobat still has some valid points, but his argument has problems and your video did an excellent job of showing some of them.
Another point that I would like to bring up in Dan Brown's video is that more information is going to the internet. This is true but this does not degrade the value of universities like you implied. Schools teach the practice of these "facts" and practice makes perfect.
Wrong. Kings had access to money to access knowledge. The peasant folk had access to very specific info related to their jobs, but that's it. Dan is totally right to assume Kings, nobles, advisors had access to info that the peasants couldn't hope to gain because they had the money and time to learn instead of working.
I just want to say, this is the first of your videos that I have seen, and I am EXTREMELY impressed. I agree 100% with everything you said. I look forward to watching other videos of yours.
For the rest, i agree, information value is still high, just the cost of it is gone down, and yes, internet is very helpful to contact, and talk to people you would never know, like now, your.. 80+, and i'm 14
I think this is the best response to dans video, your not saying bad things about him, just stating facts. I'm still on dans side though, but of all you said i only have one comment, that kings did have knowledge, they knew all the secrets in the castle, and the village, they knew all about money and where it was spent in the kingdom, and when the church came in, they became more powerful then the king, and thats why they had all the information.
Excellent reply. As an educator I have been following this debate very closely and it is interesting to note that schools are asbolutely FRANTIC with talk about modernizing curriculum, 21st century skills, technology, and innovation without much talk about HOW to accomplish these spectacular goals. I have found its is the innovative skill of the teacher who is called upon to interact with students in a meaningful way on a daily basis that makes the most difference. (cont.)
Teachers need to be willing and able to find ways to improve while working within the system - I need more colleagues who are dedicated to the profession and its improvement.
@odinsraven1000@odinsraven1000 Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I don't think think we can overstate the importance of great, creative teachers. Looking back on my own school and university experience I have been lucky to have about a dozen teachers who are still with me every day. Not just what they taught, but their presence, their love of the subject matter, and their joy in learning. 1 second ago
Exactly, as a future art teacher, I also followed this debate pretty closely and I think Dan Brown was just blindsighted and biased by the bad education experience he had. (excuse any mistakes, English is my second language)
I don't often comment on the same user's videos multiple times in one day, but you are too cool not to. You think before you talk (well, it's either that or you know a heck of a lot more than I do, which is also very probable considering I'm only a senior in high school), and have an interesting perspective on everything. Consider a 5 star and a new subscriber the reward for such thought. (...wow, I sound a bit pretentious, don't I? :P) DFTBA
@makerofshoes1 I appreciate your comment very much. I did put a lot of thought into this. What I worked hardest on was finding the tone where I could vigorously disagree with Dan without devaluing or discounting how much he's accomplished in creating a presence on YouTube.
I completed a bachelor's degree. Had some post-grad, but did not complete an advanced degree. I'm not sure what the second question means. Are you asking if my education ended after graduation? If so, I'm pretty sure I have.
As everybody else is saying... You rule. =) Suscribing.

Well, this is ignoring all science and english classes, but yeah, in all other places it is true.
Science classes are designed teach you procedural knowledge as well as factual knowledge.
English classes teach you factual knowledge that gets used as a tool in writing coherently.
Math teaches only facts, but those facts are necessary as a basis for most professions.
Everything else is much less necessary.

Dan Brown: Just got served.
Bootlegg69ing 1 year ago
I love Dan Brown and all...
Bravo!

kings didnt know that kind of information by heart, but they had access to information
MrDrewpweiner 1 year ago
agree with everything so far..but i think what he ment about the king is that the king had i guess the power and resources (libraries..access to church ect) to learn what he wanted..i guess a king could have been given the knowledge from trades if its what he wanted.

As for the Education discussion, I like your point that all the information made up on Google is as a direct result of human knowledge; equally though, we have to acknowledge that the university and secondary school system of learning needs to better understand these available techonology and perhaps adapt their system of learning as per Dickens.

Not only did you make very good points but you remained polite and calm, something other response videos have lacked. Great job!

I have enjoyed your fair responses to Dan. Very different from Tf00t. I'm glad that you recognized what he Dan actually likely meant though it may have come out wrong. eg the price vs. value thing.
whatnameisavailablee 1 year ago
I definitely agree with Dan about how education should change but I almost fell out of my chair when you seemed to read my thoughts, "Easier said than done." Dan is very amazing with his whole concept on community which is one of the reasons I like him, but I do believe he should have researched a bit more before posting his video. I'm in a private highschool so the vids don't concern me much. It's still important. I believe an important part of education is learning how to learn yourself.
FanofEverythingz 1 year ago
Search engine optimization has made finding information even harder. As long as the world is changing, people who are out to get money will change faster than anyone else to make money off of it. I do a lot of freelancing, and a lot of people are willing to pay someone else crap to write articles with SEO and then make someone's Google search crap. It's complicated, I think.
sarvigirl 1 year ago
Also, because of the Internet, anyone can have access to information that is of zero value to them; I believe this is partly what Dan Brown is trying to convey to us. Your notion on "price" and "value", however, is still very strong and provided us with insight that Dan had failed to provide.
I am appalled by Dan Brown's educational experiences which has caused him to become partly biased, but regardless he has sparked a spectacular movement that may one day become monumental to the world.
Sparky5856 1 year ago
I'm really glad that this video clears up some ambiguity behind Dan's notions. I have some thoughts about some of your points though...
There's a connection between knowledge and power, and your take on the king's knowledge has convinced me that the king did not have all of the power. Yet, the king had lots of powers that no one else had, and so the knowledge that he did possess was particularly very valuable.
Sparky5856 1 year ago
Great Point.
craptolafest07 1 year ago
i think what he meant about Kings having all the information was political information like on world affairs if there ever was any... like that there was a war and what is was about and what is being done. I think Dan brown made a good arguement he just worded things in broad way.

Mickeleh and Thunderfoot both have great responses, but I think I like Mickeleh's better. I do agree that having that information is important because it has "freed" the info that people want. I also agree that you need more than just that info.
What I think this is about is the useless info that can and will appear in the classes that most people take and the true value in educating comes from the ability of the teacher to not give us the fact but show us how to use the fact.
Anyway, great vid and worth the watch.

Just sayin

very interesting stuff. I think pogobat still has some valid points, but his argument has problems and your video did an excellent job of showing some of them.
Metalcortaku 1 year ago
Another point that I would like to bring up in Dan Brown's video is that more information is going to the internet. This is true but this does not degrade the value of universities like you implied. Schools teach the practice of these "facts" and practice makes perfect.
EradicationStation 1 year ago
In Dan's video, he said the 'monetary value,' not general value.
AnotherUglyMan 1 year ago
Wrong. Kings had access to money to access knowledge. The peasant folk had access to very specific info related to their jobs, but that's it. Dan is totally right to assume Kings, nobles, advisors had access to info that the peasants couldn't hope to gain because they had the money and time to learn instead of working.

(cont.)

@odinsraven1000 @odinsraven1000 Thanks for the thoughtful comment.

(excuse any mistakes, English is my second language)
eleph4nt 1 year ago
I don't often comment on the same user's videos multiple times in one day, but you are too cool not to. You think before you talk (well, it's either that or you know a heck of a lot more than I do, which is also very probable considering I'm only a senior in high school), and have an interesting perspective on everything. Consider a 5 star and a new subscriber the reward for such thought. (...wow, I sound a bit pretentious, don't I? :P) DFTBA
