  • Magic our Pat.

  • Pat....I love this tune, and I'm very touched with what you've done with it. Here's to ya, bro.....Rob

  • A very beautiful song ... I love the melody and voices as well ... greetings from germany, GRIT

  • I've waded thro dozens of versions of this song on UTube. About 98% of them are rubbish or worse.

This one is very good. You've done a good job on verse 3 which is not easy to get right.

    Im very impressed -

    - especially since english is not your first language.

  • shite -----so it must be brilliant.

  • The ultimate accolade..............

Had to think of some feckin' version that hadn't been tried

    My fav comment!!!!!

    Ta

    Pat Savage

  • @MrWeecha1 Freakin right it's brilliant...........

  • Awesome recording, well done!

  • Your too kind!!!!!!! A Feckin' hard song to decide how to play.......Luke Fucked us all up with the definitive version.....but what the hell???....the craich's good just the same

  • sounds great-very enjoyable!

  • I'm not sure I've heard any versions I like so much as the one we're referring to, or indeed which others I've heard. Saw once Van Morrison do a version on telly but seemed shambolic to me. Even saw Kavanagh himself sing it,but he hadn't an especially melodic voice. Interesting you quoted Cohen too - he's perhaps my favourite singer-songwriter. All the best,

    Jim

  • Leonard and Tom Waites both do melancholy like Luke.....I think!!!!!!!Kavanagh done it on RTE in the late 40's but I don't have a recording........but Have heard it isn't a patch on Luke's version....just 'cos you wrote it doesn't mean someone won't do it justice...but that's where the talent is.......and anyone can have a wee shot

    Pat

  • For my personal taste, I'd say it lacks the necessary melancholy of the particular version I love. I find the harmonies a distraction also, the strings too plucky.

  • Ah well grobbledonk. You can't please them all.

How long have you fancied Luke Kelly? I hope your ears get better soon. When's your next record out?

  • I don't make records, nor would i ever want to. I don't even buy them

  • Spot on!.......Just a wee try at a one guitar version........and nobody done "melancholy" like Luke.......Please post any other good versions you've heard...Luke is the only one I've ever heard worth attempting

    Pat

  • Or as Leonard Cohen said we have to:

"Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your "perfect" offering There is a crack in everything Thats how the light gets in"

    Pat

  • good stuff

  • VERY GOOD VERSION.

    nice pics in the video.

  • wow great rendition...love the rhythm!

  • Not an easy song to get your head round

Decided to do it in open tuning.DADF#AD

works quite well for one guitar

    Pat

  • Wow =) Thanks for the message. This is brilliant!!

  • You'r too kind.just a wee carry on at home.....but I love the Cavanagh and Luke
