Hey you said make sure both fans are working in my 94 accord only one of them turn on after replacing the fan switch but the other one doesnt turn on but it works will that be the problem whit over heating
Thank you for this video! It was invaluable to me when my '95 Civic EX (obviously very similar to the Accord) began overheating. I ended up replacing the radiator, thermostat and the cooling fan motor switch. Your video made it easy. The only major difference on the Civic was the location of the radiator fan plug and the lack of a bleeder valve which Honda removed on all post '95 Civics, so I learned. So I'm happy! But it was a hell of a way to spend my Labor Day weekend. :P

So I bought a 95 Accord from a guy who I don't think was all that smart. He cut a whole crapload of stuff, and just completely rmoved a few things... like the horn. Question: He cut the 2 hoses that come from the bottom of the radiator. What is the purpose of these? Where should they be going to? If you can tell me where the horn goes that'd be cool too. I picked up a new one, but don't know where it goes
Thanks for the "video". i found it pretty helpful on changing out my 96 accord automatic. i would only add some more detail on taking off the coolant hoses (had a hard time disconnecting the lower hose) and some more detail on disconnecting the transmission cooler lines. don't worry too much about capping them, just refill the transmission with ATF to replace whatever was in the lower reservoir and what dripped out of the hoses.
on my 95 Ex you have to take the lip off before yoy can get to under pan he was talking about. I took off the fans off first then the hoses from the auto to the radiator there was no room to squeeze the clamps from underneath the car. fans connectors are a pain to takeoff, only a half a cup came out when I took the hoses off even less after I took radiator out. took about 2hours to take all off

So i need to replace my thermostat in a 2004 Honda Civic ex.....do you know if it is anything like this or totally different. I just dont wanna pay for something I can learn to dol. By the way great video...its very much appreciated.
@Beth00able my assumption would be that its similar. i know the older civics, the thermo was easier to get to than the accord. does the 04 civic have the k20 engine? either way, i think the thermostat should be connected to the upper radiator hose, so it should be easier than my car.
I have a question regarding the 2 radiator fan. Does both fan turn on when you start the engine or the other one is just a back-up. I noticed that in hot days the temp goes up and open the hood, noticed that only one fan is running. So is this a back-up fan or both should be running? Do you think this is the cause for the temp to go up? Thank you for you answer.
@chowchila they should both be going on when the radiator needs to be cooled. sounds like you might have an electronic problem or your fan is bad. get that checked out!
Thanks for a strait forward procedure. Expertvillage takes like 30 minutes and crap about saftey and such. I was changing the oil pan gasket when the bastard decided to start leaking right onto my chest. Car is cursed
Is there a way to prevent all the transmission fluid from coming out of the transmission line to the radiator for automatics, or do you have to drain it?
Thanks again! Have an ancient radiator that's cracked and it's only a matter of time before it starts leaking before the summer heat comes and kills it entirely. Ordered a new one and should be here soon.
I am going to try to do this. When ordering the radiator with mine being a manual 4 cyl 97 accord....are there different radiators for auto and manual trans? Also is it normal in the winter for both fans not to come on?
auto and manual radiator is the same. and yes, your fans should be coming on, even if it is winter. you should test those to make sure they are still working.
they look the same but the radiator for the auto transmission has 2 extra connections you gotta make at the bottom for the transmission cooler. oh and if its really cold and engine temp is lower then the temp setting for your fans to kick on then its okay it needs to get up to a certain temp for the fan to come on.
Thank you for putting this vid together cause it saved me some serious cash while upping my diy self-esteem. Your efforts and knowledge are most appreciated.
good job, but you forgot to mention about removing the transmission lines from the underside if you have an automatic (?), and where exactly is that bleeder valve located?
added to the description about the auto tranny lines. there are 2 pics of the bleeder valve, one at 2:28 and the other at 3:14. its located on top of the thermostat housing that's connected to the lower radiator hose. 12mm bolt that looks like a nipple sticking out.
One thing about bolt sizes for all of you people that have no clue about metric bolts on hondas.
M12 or M10 in this "video" means the socket size and not the actual thread size, to get the thread size, just subtract 4 from your socket size. Other then that this is pretty nice vid and very simple DYI to do.
sorry, when i did this install, i didn't remove it, but if you take those 2 bolts off and take the housing off, it's right there. all you need to do is pull it out with your hands. it might even come out with the housing when you take it off.

on an automoatic, what fluids run out of the 2 cooler lines? should i be careful about how much drains out?
livefortheone51 1 year ago 2
@livefortheone51 i believe its auto tranny fluid. you need to cap the lines while you take the radiator off.

Is there a way to prevent all the transmission fluid from coming out of the transmission line to the radiator for automatics, or do you have to drain it?
MajorIronwood 2 years ago
you need to find some sort of plug or cap to cover the hole. then you should be good to go.
nukem384 2 years ago
Any recommendations? I can't find a lot of stuff on the net on what to use other than some kind of nut clamped to the hose.
Thanks for the help.
MajorIronwood 2 years ago
id use some sort of rubber cap. try the local auto part store, im sure they have stuff like that, and maybe a hose clamp just to keep it on.
