Henri Nouwen was indeed celibate. He has never practiced his homosexual feelings. It has been a great struggle for him. However, he never gave in (according to himself "for the sake of Christ") because he considered sexuality a sacred gift between a man and a woman...
I see upthread that some people are discussing homosexuality. Did you know that Henri Nouwen was gay? Seriously. If you rea the introduction of the book "The Essential Henri Nouwen" edited by Robert A. Jonas, he talks about how Henri's homosexuality was something he rarely disclosed and he never wanted it to distract from his message, which he talks about in this video. Yes, Henri was celibate; he was an RC priest, after all.
How many years, how many hours of communion with the Father to find out that we are chosen, blessed, broken (this one really speak to me) and given? He is one of those person that once you heard them, you shouldn't be the same! Thanks for letting us to learn from others what we can't learn from the scripture. Siempre.
@TheChaseair Funny your comment is based on his lifestyle, but you overlook the truth of his message. Truth can be spoken through the most broken people and usually is.
@bmc7785 Did you know the Bible says that homosexual shall enter into the kingdom of God and also that God has given them up to a reprobate mind? This is not a "broken" person but a sexual pervert in rebellion to God. He is to be pitied for today he is probably burning in the eternal flames of Hell. This is the case with all who hate God and refuse His counsel.
@TheChaseair The bible never once used the word "homosexual". You kniow that, the bible also never used the word "hell"..you know that. I assume you have studied the greek, as you seem to be quite serious a student. keep studing you have much to learn.
@1macboo In Romans Chapter 1 : For this cause God gave them up to vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
Not speaking of homosexuals?
Eternal damnation is a long time my twisted friend.
Hi, It is important to realize exactly to whom this passage refers. It involved some former Christians who had converted back to Paganism and started worshiping idols in the form of humans, animals, and birds. They engaged in wild sexual orgies -- activity which was common in Pagan worship at the time. Although their sexual orientation was presumably heterosexual, under the influence of emotion, alcohol, frenzied activity, they engaged in same-sex behavior:
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
This certainly is a general statement condemning sin. I suppose you meant by your first comment that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. By this chapter, it is shown that God abominates the practice. You did know that you need to be born again to see the kingdom of Heaven?
@TheChaseair women had sex with other women; men with other men. In doing so, they violated their own nature, which was heterosexual. They were in turn punished, probably with an STD which was very common at the time. They were being punished because their behavior was opposite to their fundamental nature. The passage is a condemnation of men and women with a heterosexual orientation engaging in same-sex behavior outside loving committed relationships.
@1macboo Remember, you cannot be afraid to see what you see. Let the Bible speak to you, do not read your perversity into it. Simple English grammar will rise up in the last day against you. There is more hope for a fool than you.
@TheChaseair My "perversity"? I'm very serous about reading scripture as it was intended, clearly not literally but rather more than literally ...or metaphorically (the pharasees were the literalists' of their day) You seem to have more in common with those pharasees who "strain out a gnat but swallow a camel." Hey,Jesus loved metaphores..and HE really loves you too! Praise God for His grace ( unconditional grace...the only kind)Peace on you journey. Hope to have not offended. 1 cor.10:31
I "met" him thru Phillip Yancey's writings. He dramatically change my perception of people, specially people with disabilities. I think that he is one of the person that really made a difference in every person that personally knew him. Thank you so much for upload such a servant of Christ.
This "First Love" life (I John 4:19) is a life lived grounded in the Ground of All Being, a life conformed to the pattern of Jesus Christ, a life empowered by the Holy Spirit -- a life that is a participation in God's own life that transcends the "ups and downs" of our individual lives, a life that participates%2
I am the beloved son of God; on me God's favor rests. I am chosen, blessed, broken, and given... everyday. I am grateful and humbled indeed, to be an instrument of God's love in my daily life.

I have read all that Henri left for us, and he clearly lived the life of the beloved and gave himself away and asked for nothing in return.
So many judging posts on here. Very sad. Your judgment blinds you to the truth and beauty of Henri's life and teaching.
