@Byron22Bmc Hello Ian, thanks for commenting. Because grass snakes are so aware and are especially sensitive to human activity in that area in particular, I didn't have many chances to grab one and where I did, I took it! I also slipped on the way down, so that's why I ended up falling over, but I really just meant to lunge for the snake as it 'scampered' off.
@MrsJadehall Hi there. thanks for watching. No, you shouldn't keep grass snakes. Firstly they are protected by law. Therefore any resultant injury and death from keeping one, would be an offence. Secondly, they have to be fed on frogs and toads and it is very difficult and cruel to find that many for the snake for the entire year. Therefore I would say definatly not, to keeping one. They look way better in the wild anyway.
Hi Ben. Is Exmoor in somerset a good place to find snakes? My brother recently found and caught 2 slow worms there, but we couldnt find any snakes. Cheers for your earlier comment!
Good video mate, I've been studying British reptiles since 1974 when I was 12. I can see you know your stuff. Was that Grass Snake REALLY heading towards you though, lol. In my experience they are the most nervous of all British snakes!!
@djsbehavingbadly Thankyou. I try! Yes, that grass snake was heading straight towards me. I saw her basking, crouched down, and she slithered partly off into the bracken. I gave it 3 or 4 minutes and she returned slowly - as you can see. Beautiful creatures. Thanks for watching,
@benwaddams Great video. I am 14 and have a passion for snakes too. I catch a lot in france but I am yet too see one in England, even though I live on the outskirts of a wood and has a pond in my garden full of frogs and newts and lakes nearby. i am in hampshire. Where do you live or find snakes, because there seem to be none in my area. What time of year to they finish hibernation-march of april?
@robinswith1b Hiya mate, that sounds like a great spot. There will be snakes around you. Check your local wildlife trust website or call them up. All our snake species are out of hibernation now and will continue to be so until October. Good luck!
@Rhed009 We call them grass snakes here. No harm whatsoever was done. I really do love these animals and I hope, for those who did not know, there was some education in there. Thanks for watching.
Its a shame that people dont understand snakes there not horrible mean animals that go round biting people for no reason snakes are just like humans they want to be left alone also snakes are very very intresting animals and such such good fun
oh hell, there are snakes in this country. I planned to do a lot of hiking in the nature during the summer while I am here, but after seeing this I think I will spend the time safely in the city center. Unless you can tell me that there is an extremely low number of snakes in the Peak district. :-)
I'd rather wrestle a wolf than being so close to a snake. Brrrr
This particular patch is down in south Buckinghamshire. Its an old woodland of beech trees and patches of ancient common land, interspersed with clumps of heather and bracken - perfect!
Very true, just habit I guess, plus I was trying to make as little movement with my lips, or anything else, that I could. Thank you for watching and for the comment mate,
There's a Grass Snake that lives by one of my local ponds now. It's fascinating the way the slither through the grass making S like shapes. I berifly caught it on camera but the footage wasn't that good. I will hopefully get better footage today. Any tips on how to get close to them?
Great stuff! Glad to hear that mate. You can sneak up on them will soft steps and slow movements, but also if you see one slither away from a particulary sunny spot, you can crounch down, stay still and theres a very good chance of the snake returning within minutes. Good luck and let me know,
I love the grass snakes and their very shy relative, the dice snake! Had the pleasure to see that one "at work" in its environment ... but didn't have a camera at that time.
I used to hunt them as a kid, i moved to the US about a year ago and enjoyed showing this video to some friends who were unaware that we have snakes in the UK. Beautiful little fella.
Thanks for the video, i wish i still had my one of a Box turtle i found while out here in Ohio.
Very nice.
