The Canadian is indeed Brian Stemmle. He almost died; ripped his pelivs in half, massive internal bleeding. Was in a coma and they didn't expect him to walk again yet he returned to the slopes 18 months later and won Gold in the Pan Am games. Was in 3 more Olypic Games after that crash and even returned to the site and skied the same slope 5 years later successfully.

The Canadian falling at the Steilang in Kitz is Brian Stemmle in the early 90s or maybe at the end of the 80s I do not remember. He risked his life from that fall, he lost so much blood.

The guy falling at the Hausbergkante (around 0:20), is the italian Pietro Vitalini in 1995, He was totally incolume, thanking the fresh snow outside the race and overall thanking his luck. Just imagine that he restarded to run again just few hours later...

while i agree that freestyle skiers have a lot of balls to do what they do, alpine skiers are a completely different breed. Some of the airs that are on world cup downhills are comparable to some freestyle airs, with the exception that the racers are going 70mph+ when they hit them. (Try watching a downhill run from ARE) I have a friend who does both and she says racing is a greater test of courage.

ive been to some of the most dangerous downhill and super g tracks in the world (situated in the swiss and austrian alps) and the kind of shit they do at top speed is insane... fastest ive been is about 80 on my board, and that was freaky as shit, but ive also done a 8-10 meter jump, and that was way easier and less freaky...

I think the one at :44 or so is the Brian Stemmle crash. Apparently his leg caught in the fencing and it basically caused him to do the splits so violently that it kinda broke his lower half apart. I saw a show about it and it was pretty nasty.

Yes it is. The accident was due to a ski tip getting caught in the netting. He broke his pelvis in half and had massive internal injuries, was in a drug induced coma for 3 weeks, hospital for 3 months and rehab for well over a year, He returned in 1990 to win gold the first time on the slopes and 4 years later skied on the same course adn took a 14th! His crash was the reason they revamped ski netting. He is the only Canadian Alpine skier to ski 4 Olympics.
