  • great video=) hopefully the owners keep up with what u started that horse with

  • Having watched your videos over the past couple of days I can honestly say you are the best horseman I have ever seen. I am breaking a filly at the moment she is fine with the roller I have laid across her... no problems. When she gets a saddle on she flips over the girth doesn't even have to be tight and she does it. I have broken TB's for years and never came across one like her..... what advice would you give. She can be fine for 10 mins then she has a mental block and flips.

  • Once you do the girth up tight enough so the saddle won`t slip, turn her in circles and keep her on the move. You don`t want her to think flipping is a way out so tack up and get her going to keep her mind ticking over otherwise she`ll have time to "lock-on" to the flip. She should come around soom enough.

  • My thought is that this should be emphasised as something which is only used when all else has failed and the animal is in danger of going to the knackers' yard if it can't learn to behave. We humans have a lot to be ashamed of in our treatment of animals.

  • Last point : I know you state at the side of each of your videos that this technique is only meant for trainers & not beginners, but I fear that there are an awful lot of idiots out there who will think 'wow! I can bring a horse down just like that .That will make me look pretty darn good!'. There are plenty of people who will simply see this as an easy way to knock a horse into shape, overpower it rather than try to understand WHY it is misbehaving.(Need more space....)

  • The sending forward if they start to lay is cloaking and is why people are left in the dark because they never get to see whats really happening. I was also taught if a horse tried to lay down when riding to kick it and push it forward, oneday I decide to see for myself why and let the horse lay down. The result is what you called an "engineered" tool I call the TAP. Make no mistake though, this is no party trick and comes in very handle when needed.

  • Yes, in the wrong hands it could be abused but horses aren't silly, you'll only get one shot and they just won't put themselves in that position again. You abuse it, you lose it.. (trust)

  • Hi Endospink.Okay, to repeat my original comment /query: I am puzzled as to why you refer to this 'bowing',head-between-hooves posture as a NATURAL reflex.I have worked with/been around ponies and horses, including Thoroughbreds, broken and unbroken, for nearly 50yrs and I have never, ever, in any situation, seen an animal put itself into that position. As far as I can see, this is an unnatural trick that you have engineered.

  • Many people have contacted me about seeing this posture before but never joined the dots. If you can read body language you should be able to what the horse is doing by lowering the head is trying to get closer to the ground because the girth has sent it claustrophobic. You can't fool a horses natural reactions by engineering some trick and I think the numbers stand for themselves, what trick works on every horse?

  • Also, in 50yrsof working with horses, I know you have seen horse trying to lay down with gear on, it what you did to stop them that has kept you in the dark for this long. Your answer is also easy to find, gear your next yearling or starter up for the first time and slowly make them step back one step at a time then come back to me with an apology.

  • If they try to lie down with gear on just move them quietly forward and they instantly forget what they were trying to do and focus instead on where they're going. The only explanation I can think of is,(and I can only guess from your videos), that you usually work with 'problem' horses......animals that are very scarred mentally and the only way they can be controlled is by this extreme physical overpowering. (I have one more point to make, but need more space....)

  • Thank you for replying. I'm struggling to understand why I have never come up against this before and yet you seem to regard it as commonplace. I really can't relate to: "the girth has sent it claustrophobic".......perhaps over here,(England), we just expect to take a lot longer with training.....do things especially slowly.(To my mind, if it works on every horse than it most definitely IS a trick!)

  • Which user name did u post it under? I check and this is the 1st comment by eruthwain.

  • Same username

  • ok, can you ask again please.

  • Why didn't you post my observation/enquiry?

  • wow is the horse possessed or sumthin ive never seen a horse do that!!!

  • You're good, i want to learn... Do you have any course? Some pope should need youre experience ;)

Like me ^^, Well .. cya

  • Pretty horse, she looks a little like my horse. Love your vids.

  • why was she sinking in?

  • It was a natural reaction to having the girth on....

  • great to see a trainer with enough self-respect to wear proper safety attire - great techniques - well done!

  • Hey I spoke to the filly's owner yesterday, she's now a good ride like she has never done anything else in her life. Thanks again for the advice

  • Cool...be safe

  • LOL I wee my knickers laughing at the NH people ranting on about this being horse abuse, while you can clearly see no preasure at all is applied to the reins here.

It's just simply "using" their natural reactions, what the hack is wrong with that?

  • nothing.. The more I see of this Hybrid horsemanship, the more I like it.

  • what is the 'tap' and how do you do it?I have been thinking about laying down my horse, the way you do it seems so easy?

  • The TAP is a tool every horseperson should learn because humans cannot match the strength or weight of a horse when needed. The way I lay horses down is very easy but this vid wasn't me. What you saw was a natural reaction.

  • I need to learn it too. We have a horse who is dangerous to work with and I think this would put him straight. Is there a site or somthing you recommend where I could go to learn the theory?

  • Go to my site. There is a link on my channel page.

  • Hey do you actually perform the tap though?

  • Go to my site. There is a link on my channel page.

  • hey endospink, i have a question.

if a horse is taking a long time to get to canter, and im not aloud to kiss to him what should i do?

im doin everything i can, and when i kick him he just bucks.

    help?

    (just message me)

  • hey, it's not endo, but i have a tip... give the leg aid, than kiss, do than a hundred times, she'll not the leg aid gets followed by a 'kiss' and than she'll start reacting before you even have to make any noise. good luck ;)

  • Circles....good to know. I knew I was watching your vids. over again for a reason lol.

  • what actually happens the day after the tap? or just the second day? Just mount up and move on?

  • Mount up and move on business as usual. Once is enough to get the message across I'm on their side. The rest is knowing when to hold them or fold them (I'm talking about the task or goal you set for the day)

  • sweet! I'm getting sick and tired of repeating myself day after day while starting a horse, when there is such an easy way to get things done...so first couple of days of riding you keep them in a closed envorinment?

  • Keep them inside until you can steer and stop, then take them outside to wander around walking and take everything in. It's all new to them out there and they won't be in any rush to speed off. Take them back inside when your ready trot then back outside again once you are ready etc..

  • This is just too easy, what's the catch? lol

So I take it when you ride horses that know the basics of steering and stopping, it just speeds up the process?

  • I haven't mouthed a horse from the ground since watch the RTTH 2005. Everything is done from horseback..But I can see having some steering would help and if you have the time take it. This is just my way of raising the bar higher and it's not for everyone.

  • It's actually about harness racers that are used to work infront of the sulky. Only thing they don't know is the rider(yay for me).

I'm gonna ride a horse somewhere next week who simply does nothing. Moment you get on she plants her feet and goes nowhere. Should I try getting her to turn circles(like this unriden filly?) and move her out of it? or just whack her one?

  • Circles dear circles...unless Johnny Knoxville is nearby..lol

  • aight, I'll be circling my arse off. and I don't think johnny will be going anywhere for the forthcoming time ;)

Thanks for the advice anyway. I'll let you know how it went down...or not down but in circles

  • Hey today I rode the trotter filly, she moved. she moved her feet all over the place. Took me about a minute or two of circling and after that took her out of the circle and let her walk about for a bit, everytime she stopped I turned her around and got her moving again. In total a little over 30 minutes of walking and trotting. She did it and thanks for the advice. I have it on tape evidence just need to upload it.. Thanks again.

  • oh goodie, make sure you tell your NH friends on the Dutch forum..

  • Hey Endo.. a lot of people hate that you have a bit in the horses mouth when you do the TAP... they think it is somehow inhuman and horribly painful for the horse. Can you elaborate on this so I can pass it along to those kids who think they must feed tons of treats in order to establish respect?

  • hunny, I quite capable of getting myself into enough trouble without your help..lol

You can pass on these are racehorses and it is regulation to use bits but I doubt they would listen besides if I decided to go bitless, their dear Alexander would need a new job.

  • hi there :) your work is absolutely brilliant and I have been watching transfixed for hours. I want to do some bareback work with my loan horse, and I was wondering if I should buy a bareback pad with the false stirrups or not bother? which is comfier?

  • what is the TAP? and how do you do it? I have been thinking of trying to teach my horse to lay down for me so as I can mount her,as I am only 5 feet, and my horse is 16 hands, plus I am nearly 50 years old, so i can't see myself doing the 'swing'. look forward to your answer, thanks.

  • I'm a retired tb trainer and I have seen a lot of riders in my time but none that can adapt to any situation like you can. If what you say is true and you rode this horse without previous groundwork, you will be untouchable in any colt challenge, best of luck my friend.

  • you are absolutely amazing

  • Nice job! That filly is absolutely stunning. I mean wow is she a beauty! Can I ask how she is doing now? That is, if she is still training with you or not. She looks intelligent and that she picks things up pretty quickly (when she wants to!).

  • She's very switched on..I have her doing fast work and she'll probably go to the racecourse within the next month. She started a year behind the others but she has caught them now..

  • Like your way to find own ways to handels thing with a horse. Every horse is different, so one approach them different. So combinate ones own idees and experiences with others, that one learns from, a good combination. Thumbs up!

  • question...how do you think riding him bareback is related to carrying on while I am leading him? In the summer I swim the horses bareback in the river...he is fine bareback...once you get on...this is New Jersey so no swimming until the spring...another question...when is the DVD coming out I want to give them as Xmas presents...If you ever decide to take up bull riding, I think you would be successful..lots of parallels between the two sports.

  • Riding him in will eliminate him wanting to stay out there issue. If he does the same riding it's not the shank. I could've just said he is pee'd about that way the shank has been used but there would still a slight possibility he doesn't want to come in which the riding would check that off the list leaving one thing...the shank chain

    is anyone still with me...lol

  • Because the rider has got off her everytime she has put a foot out of line she now thinks she can get away with everything and so she doesnt get ridden anymore, we are jst wanting a bit of advise on how to start her off if you can give us it

  • Hiya, you need to clock up some riding hours on her and get her use to riding, especially after she has the hissy fit that the rider has been getting off for. So ride her thru the hissy fit no matter how long she does it for and finish on a high note, not when she`s being bad..She won`t play up for too long, every horse has a line they take it too before they go "oh crap" and give it up..Take it to her line and a bit further then call it a day..

  • ok well thanx for your advise we will deffinalty do that now as you have just basically explained what we were gunna do lol thanx

  • Just woundering if ou could give us any tips and a bit of help to start her off, we got a women to her and she doenst seem to have improved her so we are now doing her ourselves just a bit of advise needed please, She can be a very nervous horse but also can be extremely lazy when asking for walk or trot.

  • This is fantastic, we have a TB x Shire who has been broken in but keeps throwing th rider off she has had her back checked and there is no problem, we have searched every possible reason and our conclusion is that because the rider is quite nervous and jumps off at any slight wrong movement she thinks that she can now get away with it. We are experianced riders and have 7 horses.

  • Dear Endo, much experience in US, mostly hunters and jumpers, very interested in the Truck video, going down...shutting down...i have a Tb off track who stretches down like that when he is being led in from field and is having a temper tantrum.....he also pounds one front foot while he is in this position...does not do it when he is ridden...we think this is bizarre...we call it praying mantis...what are your thoughts. Let me know when DVD is available. Thanks so much.

  • hiya, are you leading from the side or in front ?

  • thanks for your attention, leading this rouge from the side, chain shank run under chin and up off side, sometimes under lip, sometimes thru mouth, he will try to get away from me, only does this going back to stall from field, never does it going out to field...this is a 16.3 hand bruiser, not a pony...feeling good kind of horse.

  • Take your bridle out and ride him in bareback. Then come back and tell me how he was..

  • Tackumup, you obviously have little experience whatsoever with green of problem horses. If you did, you would understand that this is not a drastic/harmful method at all. leave the commenting to those with experience in these areas.

  • wow i learned so much from this video! you are such a good trainer! (this is amber by the way....frm myspace lol) =)

    LOVE UR VID'S!!

  • do you have a book/vids? or is there a trainer you could give the name of so i could research?

    thanks

  • I have a DVD coming soon

  • Fabulous demo that the horse went to go down with you barely touching it! Perhaps her stablemates told her about you, so she decided to go ahead with it.

FYI, after watching your videos, just trying to absorb how you react and sit, your hands, etc, I have managed to sit through (and control) my horses bucking fits for the first time. You are Fab.

  • Since discovering your vids, I've watched a number of them. I've decided people resort to the physical forcing of horses, because 1.they dont have the physical ability 2.They just dont take the time to understand the nature and perception of the horse. You are both a master and artist. This horse is totally relaxed;totaly trusting. Isnt that the goal for every trainer:you want that horse so confident that they will follow you to the ends of the earth if you ask them to. This is a joy to watch!

  • This is sick!! I have never seen a horse do this when handled correctly!!!! You haven't introduced her properly or built a relationship with this horse at all. What sucks is that people are liking this.

  • My relationships are made under saddle and if this is new to you your still green. Go and get some experience before commenting..

  • Green you wish. You are green. You are only touching the surface. It is so sad.

You are the one who has stopped wanting to learn. You have your head stuck in the sand.

  • And I see tons of videos showing your superb skills working with TB's...

Please, leave commenting to those with knowledge and understanding of what he's doing. If you'd listen, he knows everything the horse is about to do and why it does it...

  • You've never seen a horse do what? You do understand he just got this horse handed to him and is expected to finish her- no luxury of introduction or time. How would you handle building this relationship? Dinner and roses?

  • If you'll notice every horse joins up with Paul at the end. If I were you I wouldn't talk for the horse. But what is it you've never seen a horse do when "handled correctly"? And what exactly would your recipe for correct handling be, given the situation being just what it is or even not... Heck, take a week.

  • Aw fantastic.

  • I have a girl at my barn who saw these videos and wanted to know if anyone could get their horse to do the "Tap" and I thought I would look.

  • Who is this trainer? And does he ever come to the United States?

  • I hear he wants to.. His name is Paul and he's as funny as hell..lol

  • He should look into the Equine Affaire. I bet they would use him.

  • did he say so? does he have any time left at all? ;P

maybe we should create a endo-clone...

  • HOWS SHE COMING ALONG? she liking the gate?

  • oooo i really liked that, that was really interesting good job!!!!

  • i jsut realized how frikkin tall this mare is!! by the way, anyone average shouldnt be trying wht Endo does, take what u see to wht yur ability allows u to do, he has the "gift", we r observers to this! enjoy it

  • BTW how old was that horse?

  • She's 2yo going on 3yo at the end of the year. She didn't get sold and got left behind for a bit..

  • Nice video. Like the way you explain how to stay safe doing this stuff. Sure would like to see you up against those cowboys!!!

  • Thanks , I will go back and put commentary on the older vids too soon..

  • Pretty mare. I liked the ending note.

  • endo, you should make a colt starting video for the average guy...not for someone with your talent...something we can use.

  • I am Bill, not fast like this but broken down over a few weeks..most people should be able to follow..

  • When do you think it will be available? And where would I get it?

    Debs

  • I'm talking about the training video you're doing...Doh

  • WOW!....loping a green horse you just met...unreal, but man....If I tried that I would get myself killed....

  • Paul,

Bravo my friend! Nobody does it better... That's your song! Baby ur the BEST!

  • I loved the ending.. "see she likes me"

  • Once again, nice job!!, looks like the horse is also pleased, happy and more confident..

    Ducks (clucks) rule..... :)

    Thanks Endo

  • I'm still working on a site called "hybrid horsemanship". Click on the link on the youtube contact box..

  • U r so right! All the 'bigs' have a HOOK. Monty-Join Up, Reis-Trailers, Parelli-Games Umm(Whatever)... There's ur hook. 'Hybrid' straight up, on, and move out.

It takes courage to start any horse. And confidence in ur ability to hang thru the job.

People are awed by that velcro butt! Most don't have that. But wish they did. Good HOOK for U! :~)

  • and that's basically it for me, I get on and take it from there. If something goes south, I ride it thru to the end because I know I only have to go one step further than the horse is willing to go and I own them. They are gonna try their best the first time, after that it's downhill.

  • I'm def with you Endo!! I always try and get inside the horses head before tackling things and have had really good results! My problem is being too gobby to the people who DONT take this approach! Hey I'm 4'11 and have a 11.hh shettie x (my daughters) wonder if i could start the swing up on him lol.

  • well no worried here, i've been on board! just saw julz "swingup" gotta get mine taped!! an hey, there will always be ONE Endo!! so chill........:)

  • I don't see how/why You should ever doubt yourself Endo, you do what you do soooo very well! I love all your videos, they are informative, sympathetic and make such good sense! It's a shame there are a lot of people with horses that are prize plonkers, that treat their horses like tractors *shudders to think of the person who fits this discription I have the misfortune to know*.Keep the vids coming Endo! Do you have a Q&A site anywhere BTW?

  • You might sound like a duck, but there's no quack here. Nice job!

  • one more thing, because of U, i am even more aware of the thought process of the horse. and tend to challenge myself more now. please dont let these flybynites bother u. u r the one we're watching, not them!!!HHHMMMM

  • from what i've read here, we are seeing a small sample of wht u do everyday, where some start only a few at a time, usually doing ground work first. reactions wouldnt be quite the same!!!y does everyone have such a hard time with this? Paul, whtever u do, never doubt yourself!! keep up your cheekieness!!!, it fits u well my friend:)

  • I know how important groundwork is to some people but I'm gonna keep starting horses this way till it's second language. It's the only way to step away from the crowd. Look in the yellow pages under "Natural Horsemanship Trainers" I refuse to be another number..I'm stepping away from the crowd and I would like you guys to come with me..

  • Wherever you go, master, we shall follow :P

  • Cool, don't shave your heads just yet though..we'll save that for E-day..lol

  • Fab video Endo! I like your all or nothing approach lol It obviously is the best way to do it too, your success with your horses prooves it! Now...hmmm.....I must at least master the swing up lol.

  • I'm gonna upload the full version start to finish to my homepage tonight but it won't have any commentary ok..

  • Very good, as usual! =)

  • If I should see a 'cowboy kick her in the guts' I would walk away! That'd be a 'cowboy' (in the worse sense of the word) all right... NOT a 'horseman'. No one I'd care to learn from any ways.

    Was this a FIRST ride?

Are you sure you hadn't 'tapped' her along the line somewhere? She seemed almost conditioned for that response.

Perhaps it is something subtle that you naturally do that isn't so obvious to the viewer???

  • It happens everywhere, the horse sinking down scares the handler and they put the boot in to get it up because they don't know what's happening. Julz, I had never seen that horse before and I'm sorry if it looked rehearsed but what can I do? The guy brang it on a truck 30mins before I got on it. I tried to upload the whole thing but it got rejected for being over 10 mins..

  • I don't panic in any situaton but if it makes the way I work with horses look fake I suppose I could bite my nails or something..

I suppose the sooner I get over there and show everyone, the sooner people will stop doubting me.

  • No, Endo. Not doubting you, and not saying rehearsed. Bit vague on the vid. Moved like her first ride, wanted to clarify.

It's interesting they respond to you like that(kneeling). You're the 'King of Tap'. If you hadn't 'tapped' her, perhaps there is something in your handling that gets this response. Something you don't even know you're doing. Colts go UP and SIDEWAYS or BACK but rarely DOWN. There's something to that, Endo. Why was down first option and up as her second?

  • I'm not the reason they go down, I'm the reason evrybody gets to see it. It was pure coicidental. That was the TAP in it's most natural form which is, next to zero human interaction.

  • Most have to learn to lay down or be thrown down. They give it to you Endo. Trying to understand the 'why'.

Respect what you do! When you're a jerk I'll tell ya.

The multitudes will try and shred you in the 'big time'. I'll be on your side!

  • It will be very hard to shred me at the "Road to the Horse" in front of 6000 people..

  • You start them right. Up, on, and moving out. All'ranges of motion' from the 1st ride. Forever they will be asked to go forward. So let them GO, encourage it! Love that you have thoroughly grasped that concept.

Hey, Endo, I'm a FAN and a 'student' of sorts too. :~)

  • Julz, I hope you do more than tell me I'm a jerk when I deserve it..

  • In cyberspace you take a LOT of criticism I'm sure. Pull your 'gloves' off and get ready for the questions. If you want to be a 'star' get ready with answers. Serious answers! You'll get a lot of questions. I'd like to say I knew you when you were just a cheeky SOB on Youtube. Grooming you for the future, Endo. Listen to 'old age'. Ha, ha, ha!

  • I know but it was just a bit of a shock thinking my own fans were doubting me..thats all

    Lets move on..

  • so did he decide NOT ot get on her first?! whats the time frame on this one now? a reasonable time i hope.. good luck

  • The guy said he was gettin too old to be ridin, his 50ish..The whole process took 13 mins but youtube rejected it and I had to cut it. I don`t like cutting because people said it was edited..

  • i'm the first?!!!!! she seemed pretty levelheaded. brings me back to the days of my colt i broke:)may he r.i.p.! is this the one u were expecting from that trainer/breeder?, of the last one?

  • Thats the one..
