After the horrible experience with the CLR and the dramatic incident at the 1954 24h, I hope Mercedes understood that the Circuit de la Sarthe hates them.
@SectF1 I didn't want to sound disrespectful. But Mercedes was never extremely lucky at the 24h of Le Mans: they only bought home one victory (In 1952), overshadowed by the accident in 1955 that saw a 300 SLR as a protagonist and left 84 persons dead, and those ridicule backflips in '99.
@SectF1 ; Mercedes may have beaten others in producing the first motor vehicle, but he didn't invent the first combustion engine etc, he just got it to the media first....
Also seeing as they have been producing cars for so long why are they among the few manufacturers that will build a car that begins to rust within warrenty?

@hissingsidney Actually, only two Mercedes´ crashed, the one with Webber and the one with Dumbreck. After this crash, Mercedes took the last car out, it didn´t crash
@dk95mp Yes I forgot that after the first flip in qualifying, Webber's car was rebuilt and he was allowed to use it in warm up, where it flipped again. So yeah 3 flips but only two of three Mercs actually flipped.
Mercedes tried to blame Webber for the 2 previous times the car flipped over. When this happened, they finally admitted it might just be an aerodynamic issue and withdrew their final car.
@gaz170 Really? That makes no sense since Mercedes made aero adjustments to the cars after the 1st and 2nd flips, so why would they change anything on the car if they felt the drivers were at fault?
its hard to beleive its real like one of the thunderbird shows when they have the small cars fly off the road, its crazy to see a car flip into the forrest, dam he luck,.
This Car was being driven by Mark Webber who is currently a driver for red bull racing for those of you that dont know, the car is the Mercedes CLR GTLM this was one of 3 accidents similar to this one that mark webber had over the 24hour LeMans race. the flip happens because when the car goes up the steep hill the air goes under the car and forces it to lift, because the car is travelling at such a high speed it therefore gets enough forces pushing against it to make it do a flip.
Another person who apparently didn't see the race and is not paying attention to what is being said. It was PETER DUMBRECK idiot. Weber had been in the car the other times but not this one. I was watching on tv when it happened and remember them saying then it was dumbreck driving. Where the hell do people keep getting this "weber was driving" crap? The reason i react this way is because there seems to be one or two commenting on every clip. It was 10 years ago, get it right people!
@G2IntegraDA well first there is a big..... lifting feeling.... than you feel waightless (as you see the world spin around you).... finaly comes the crash landing.... see the thing is nothing hurts you untill you land... it sucks
Its extremely Hard to stop it with le mans regulation.. full length diffusers arent used. its because the suspension allows the front end to lift... then the flat bottom creates practically a wing shape.. they've been trying to come up wwith ideas to stop it.
Mercedes has always been a danger for spectators at Le Mans...They stayed away for 30 years, then attacked again. What if this happened near the stands?
i read the luckiest part of the story was that he landed in a spot where the track staff had removed some trees a couple of weeks before the race as a general safety precaution
My point is that a lot of cars have done this in the past and still do it has little to do with aerodynamic flaws. It's just a matter of setting the ride height wrong too low or too high front to back bump and rebound setting all wrong wrong springs can make a car pitch and oscillate; then the aerodynamics do the rest of the flying.
Plus, that area of the track used to have like a hump, or dip........and it would pick them up off the track if hit the right way...and when the air got to the underbody of these prototypes.....
Yes you know my pont is that the angle or incidence of the track is not the primary cause of the flight of that Mercedes, to me it says that Mercedes did not do the right amount of development work on the CLR GTP since it was constructed to win at Le Mans, and they could have tested road incidence ina wind tunnel, but they clearly did not do that.
Why do people keep calling this a CLR?? I thought Mercedes called it the CLK-GTR?? I loved this car when it came out in1998, but obviously it did not have enough downforce on the front of the car which is the main reason it flipped to begin with! And then they came out with the updated version in 2000 I believe which had a totally different rear wing design, and a revamped front end design also.
Its impossible to predict aerodynamics that way. Such accidents have happened at Le mans even in recent past (I think Peugeot had a small flight lesson a few years back).
Besides, if shit decides to happen its going to happen no matter what.
It was the suspension settings that caused the car to takeoff. I f the ride height or damper settings were just right for this vehicle to pitch up or oscillate more than 1 cm on it's dampers then the car will fly! Once the suspension is set wrong or the car oscillates that's not the aerodynamics it's the suspension. Once the car is 1 cm off the ground the flat bottom acts as a sail and the car just takes off.
Not to insult your gangsterness video poster, but don't you mean "Join the group with (not whit) the ultimate clips" and "and EVERYONE is welcome (not are welcome)"? Just trying to help you guys out.
le mans is a very diffuclt track it takes years of experiance and reputation building to race in it.for a car going airbourne in le mans was no real suprise to me. in a f1 race yes but this? not really. i hope f1 race in le mans soon that would be awesome!
Webber's Mercedes went airbourne in qualifing, Peter Dumbrecks went airbourne during the race and mercedes pulled all the cars out, Webber never started the race
What are you talking about? Mercedes never even raced in US in 1999.
You must be talking about Bill Auberlen's BMW LMR V12 in 2000 and Porsche GT1 in 1998, both flipped at Road Atlanta, pretty much in the same exact spot even. Vids can be found here if you search for them.
This crash occurred just after the mercedes went over a crest in the track and was passing. In practice the same thing happened. The Mercedes engineers made aero adjustments to correct the problem of air getting under and hitting the car broadside as well, creating instability. Rules changes were promulgated to solve problems of lift, mainly to the flat underside of the cars. This I got from Racer mag, and I am sure that there are more knowledgeable people out there who can be more specific.
boy you are genius, I'm surprised the engineers of a million dollar car never thought of that. plus a rear wing doesn't help once your front end takes flight. That is why they have front wings too!
