  • This is an insightful comment, because it is really the air that is moving into the lungs to cause the stomach to move out. It is very possible to move your stomach in and out without breathing at all! The secret to singing is to find true sound of your voice without unhelpful muscular tension. I find breathe in stomach out to be helpful for most singers, because it is a sign that you aren't pulling up the shoulders and tightening around the larynx. But it is no guarantee.

  • While I like the concept of breath in, stomach out, I do have to question it. I used to follow that rule, but found out I was actually manipulating the muscle instead of letting it expand with the breath. It made it much harder for me to release from the uppper abdominals and ribcage (since I had been pushing the stomach for so long). Furthermore, this active engagement in the stomache made it near impossible to release the breath freely.

Really, I feel it should be "breath in, body expands"
