  • If I saw a real soldier or airmen coming I would have probably held down the transmit button on the enemies radio...

To save a life says the commander of the Tuskegee Air Men!!

  • Hu,

When the South Koreans and Japanese went toe to toe to see which one finished their side of the Petronus Twin towers first -and worked through the night -that was national pride...

    Here is ours...

I'm sorry, the rivets are your sorry ass reputations my little slaves...

Look, they're so proud they are skipping breakfast!!

    Try this prison master...

His economic policy is worse then ours and how will we ever rebuild our middle class and put us back to work!!

  • get that bull off the tv, i brought a couple of dvd's over

  • No one has ever matched his acting during his monologue on the bridge after it was completed and Sessue Hayakawa was also a phenomenal actor.

His "less is more" ideas played out beautifully!

  • A LEAN NIGHT!

  • Jack Hawkins////The most sensible thing for Major Shears to do is to go ahead and jump and hope for the best..........with or without parachute...ha ha ha ha ha very good with or without parachute......ha ha ha ha ha.

  • The first time I watched this film I remember toward the end I was perched off my seat, clenching my fists, gritting my teeth and at times shreiking in sheer anticipation at what would happen. This by far has been the most exhilarating film climax I have ever watched.

  • @FuelledByForties I watched this today and I was like. FUCK!!!!!!COME ON!!!!!KILL HIM!!! SHIT!!!!!ARGH!!!! FUCK!!!

  • do you have to use such foul language

  • @MrAlberto2118 sorry

  • very noble of you to apologise

  • Respect.

  • c'est super bien

  • were they the members of forgotten army?

  • @firefly361 They were mostly Allied troops taken prisoner during the opening months of the Pacific War when the Japanese went on the offensive almost everywhere :)

  • My favorite part was where the Brits added a sign to the Bridge "This bridge was designed and constructed by soldiers of the British army" or something like that.

It was like "In your face Japs it's our bridge"

  • Obi wan kanobi!!!!!!

  • To be seen were, exactly? Not in a nearby theatre for sure...

  • dope shit, you gotta love classical... you can feel the emotion

  • @rilingdo u know why we never make movies about the japs side? becuzz u lost nawwww was that to harsh? :P

  • I think bridge on the river cock is a nice touch

  • @hunky191 Further conversation with my wife leads me to the source of the confusion - it is a case of Romanization gone wrong.

Kwai = Water Buffalo or alternately used as an insult to call someone stupid.

Kwae = Tributary of a river. (Kwae Yai being the new name of the part of the Mae Klong river the bridge is built over.)

Kuai = A nasty word for penis. (My wife was rather reluctant to even say this one.)

There would be no confusion if we were talking face to face.

  • @hunky191 Well, I may be stupid, but, the information I gave you has been verified by my wife who has in depth knowledge of the area as she is from Kanchanaburi.

There are many ways to Romanize the spelling of Thai words - just changing the spelling does not change the meaning.

If you have proof that what you are saying is more accurate than what my wife says please stop by my home in Kanchanaburi and we can discuss it.

BTW - Mae Nam Noi is a small river - not kwai or khwae.

  • most moving part, A. Guinness ever played -- so nuanced. What an actor!

  • @hunky191 The bridges were built over the Mae Klong river which was later renamed the Khwae Noi river as a public relations response to this book/movie.

Kwai means water buffalo in Thai and is also used as a colloquial expression to say someone is stupid or an idiot.

  • Wait, they talk about Lawrence of Arabia yet this was made before it. WTF

  • I was in this film. I played the Indian bloke pulling the fan

  • The cynical William Holden tells it like it is to the injured Jack Hawkins,GREAT STUFF.

  • 1:00

    SWAN DIVE!

  • Love, love, love this movie! Obi Wan Kenobi fans check it out, one of Alec Guinness' best!

  • Nice looking flick. Will have to catch it on the late show.

  • My favorite movie of David Lean.

  • @ateniense7 there is a david lean club in myspace but all the clubs are temporarily shut off

  • dr zhivago

    brief encounter

and the bridge on the river kwai

    A LEAN NIGHT

  • @cheeseman4444 ITS UNFORGIVABLE

  • Percy Herbert was one of the actors in the film, he was actually a slave of the japs on the Burma railway during the war.

This info was brought to director David Lean's attention and Herbert then became the technical adviser.

  • Percy Herbert was one of the actors in the film, he was actually a slave of the japs on the Burma railway during the war.

This info was brought to director David Lean's attention and Herbert then became the technical advisor.

  • For your edification, Percy Herbert - one of the actors in the film was actually a slave of the japs on the Burma railway.

David lean - the director was informed of this and made Herbert a technical technical adviser on the film.

  • i have read several books written blokes imprisoned by the japs and one said that this film tho` it was good entertainment was an insult to anyone actually there

  • @unclemort1960

One funny thing is that the camp's so called brute, Colonel Saito in real life was actually second in command. Furthermore, he was oddly quite respected by the POWs and Colonel Philip Toosey even defended him during the war tribunals. They became good friends after that. Likewise, like you said its a good film but a bad historical references.

  • I told my OHS grade school music teacher, Ms. Gertrude Speck, of seeing the movie and hearing the Colonel Bogey March. I did not know the correct name of the song back in 57, but coming in after recess one day I got chills. The school orchestra was playing it very lively!! One thumb up!

  • ein excelenter film mit einer ausgezeichneten melodie - den sehr bekannten "river kwai march"

    danke für's posting

  • What have I done?

  • Hayakawa was the quintessential JAP, from his looks to his accent

when he spoke English. What would this film have been without him?

  • Ive only heard of this movies cuz of the UNFORGIVABLE guy

  • @djjasonlong lol me too

  • @djjasonlong get that bull offa the tv, i brought acouple of DVDs over bitch!!!

  • @Xr24manX Forget that, man! Bridge over River Kwai has been released on Bluray.

I watched it and I still can't tell what that war was good for. Perhaps when it gets released in 3D? Maybe? At least we got this masterpiece and a couple of fantastic bomb craters out of it.

  • A LEAN NIGHT!

  • one of the best films i've watched =)

  • Why of course this is a really fine movie but not without flaws. The time spent with the Holden plot line put a drag on the film to an extent, don't you agree?

  • Sessue Hayakawa, the actor playing the Japanese commandant, began his career in the silent era and became the first Asian-American superstar in Cecile B. DeMIlle's "The Cheat" 1915. He was one of the highest paid actors in Hollywood in the 20's. After WWI his career declined but rose again in the 40's. He reached the apex of his career in "Bridge..." for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor. A magnificent performance along with Alec Guinness.

  • This must be a trailer from a re-release, not 1957. Twice they refer to Lawrence of Arabia...which was 1962 !

  • i went white water rafting over where that bridge was built this summer.. yeahh

  • I am so fucking jealous of you :(

    peace

  • @IsmaelterVeer lol head down to sri lanka man.. nice place and pretty cheap too. whitewater rafting's the bomb!!!

  • @thepickledfish I live there :D

  • @uberkelvin sri lanka?

  • @thepickledfish Yes :)

  • Alex Guinness was perfect in this film

  • haha me too

    A LEAN NIGHT

    Unforgivable

  • LOL!!!! Obi-Wan was imprisoned in a Japanese concentration camp?

  • LOL, the only reason i looked up this movie is because of unforgivable, lol

  • lol me too man!

    A LEAN NIGHT!!

  • I can't remember how many times I saw this film. So much that I decided to go and to have a look myself in Thailand. It was a real experience standing on that bridge knowing that +/- 30.000 died over there.

  • they don't make like these any more.

  • One of the 10 greatest movies ever made along with "The Wizard Of Oz" "Lawrence of Arabia", "Casablanca", "Gone With The Wind", "The Birth of A Nation", "The Godfather", "King Kong" (1933), "Ben-Hur", "The Ten Commandments" and "Psycho".

  • This was one of the worst trailers ever, but it is for one of the greatest movies ever. funny how it turns out sometimes

  • Nie potrzeba słów,,prawda?!

  • it was filmed in Sri Lanka

  • una buena pelicula clasica, recomendada!!

  • excelent movie

  • Hey, the Japanese commander played the pirate captain in The Swiss Family Robinson.

  • one of the best

  • Comment removed

  • It isn't. Trust me. They just sucked at making trailers back then. The movie itself is epic.

  • oh you suck. It's one of the most epic movies of all time, especially the end.

  • How about modern movies that are black and white, like Ed Wood or Schindler's List. They are modern flicks, yet they keep a certain golden feel to them. Do you find them dull too? Just wondering.

I mean, I'm not bashing you or anything. Some people just can't stand the older movies for some reason, no matter how well they are made.

Anyways, I really need to see this movie. I haven't seen it yet, but I sure as hell plan to.

  • Well, to each his own.

At least we can agree that Schindlers List is a fantastic piece of work.

  • Probably because you've got a 5 minute attention span

  • A beautiful movie shot in a beautiful country called Sri Lanka

  • My primary school would play this while we marched onto the field.

    what memories

  • all time classic movie.

  • The Bridge On The River Kwai - A Classic!

  • i hardly remember this, i used to watch this movie with my grandfather when he was alive, and the only thing i remember was the music, and the bridge that they built was it bamboo??

  • The cool thing was Higgins from Magnum was one of the Major's.

  • Ranked no.13 on the AFI's top 100 best movies of all time, this movie is noted for the performance of Alec Guinness........considered to be the closest an actor will get to portraying his true character in a film.

  • This movie is excellent and wasn't meant to accurately depict the War.. wah wah wah like little babies you're all idiots.... this movies a classic.

  • @ThunderStormV5000 I agree I think it was all about the depiction of our cultural differences.

  • @ThunderStormV5000 The problem is that most people think that movies do accurately depict the war.

  • @ThunderStormV5000 The book by boule was differant than the movie nicholson was a hero in the movie he was a fool that fell into the anti war ending

  • that song of casuality no its from blancanieves.........

  • What an amazing film, with a strong performance by Alec Guiness. One of the greatest war films ever developed beside apocalypse now, all quiet on the western front and saving private ryan

  • David Lean is the best!

  • LOL. a slap in the face to the guys that were there in terms of what it was really like. watch this movie once for the ending, and then bury it.

  • Indeed, it was a work of fiction and it's a shame so many think it was somehow based on fact. i certainly doesn't show how awful the soldiers had it in Jap POW camps. A large percentage of them of them didn't survive.

  • right. i know they can't show all the blood and guts in the 50's, but they should have still done a better job. maybe a remake will do the pows justice.

  • Well, at least it's better than Hogan's Heroes LOL.

  • You are very correct, the only film that comes near to the atrocities committed in the POW camps is probably, The Deer Hunter, which was set in the Vietnam War

  • @barflewk true it was 50% death rate in some of the smaller camps

  • I searched this movie cuz McNulty from The Wire referenced this movie. supposingly his famous line, "whut did i do?" came from this.

  • It's "What have I done"!

  • Better yet; "What have I done?"!

  • A simple phenomenal masterpiece. Great performances and very interesting story. It deserves all ot It's Oscars. One of my favourite films of all time. Don't forget also the "Corporal Boogey march" ;). Cult!!!

  • On doit ce film a: PIERRE BOULE qui fut l'auteur du roman, ainsi que le film: "La planète des singes"

  • I FOUND A LINK TO WATCH THIS MOVIE ONLINE FULL AND FREE:

    blogger-films.blogspot.*com/2008/10/bridge-on-river-kwai.html

  • los ingleses fueron, unos valientes en la guerra contra los nipones, demostraron lo que es el honor.

  • COMMANDOS 2 has a level about that, even a capitan is named Guiness

  • Wikipaedia does a fair job of the true story.

  • A good film but an insult to Britain. The book was written by Pierre Boule and was a stitch-up of the British by a Frenchman who could never forgive a favour. he had to denigrate Britains role in WW2 because of France's shame. To have the folly of a British Officer rescued by an American was a travesty. In Reality, there were no Americans in the camp and after American planes tried to blow up the bridge (and missed)5 times, it was finally bombed(and hit) by the RAF.

  • one of the best movies ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, and an historical travesty.

  • my name is habeeb from sri lanka. my uncle Mr. Joonus lebbe Jaleel was working with this film com, to build the wooden bridge at kithulgala. its a memory of the old. still you can imagin if you travel to sri lanka, you may visit this place. kithulgala, colombu hatton highway.

  • it is a good movie but it dose not tell what really happened there. The Japanese were far more brutal and many of the Prisoners were killed not only by there guards but by disease it was a hell hole. There were also Asian Laborers.

  • Excellent film!

  • this movie blows my mind

  • The greatest war movie ever produced.

  • A LEAN KNIGHT!

  • The change in Japan after the war - does it have anything to do with the real story behind the bridge over the river Kwai? Is there a similar potential for a change toward better in the world at large today? At least the culture of my homecountry Finland thinks that there is a lot that others could learn from us: things that would be very beneficial to them.

  • What wouldn't one do to show that our culture is better than theirs, that they should learn from us. For a better world, by very cynical means.

  • my bird can whistle this tune ,,, it is aewsome .......look at my page :)

  • very good film.ok

  • Steady on there, chaps.

  • --I'm sorry, I thought you were the enemy.

--Well I'm an American if that's what you mean.

  • whats this film about? what war what year or years was the war etc etc????

  • It's set in WW2 in a Japanese Prisoner of war camp.

  • GREAT movie!!

  • SUPERB CANT WAIT TO SEE AGAIN

  • bloody great film

far better than saving private ryan and other yank films

  • The movie was an epic WWII adventure/action, drama about war. I loved watching it when I grew up. Showed me that British Colonel didn't care about winning any war, but to build those bridges as a monument to himself. It was & still is one of my favorite movies. And yes William Holden was a hottie in it lol

  • UNFORGIVABLE!

  • british is best

  • best movie!
