A lot of modern Japanese stuff is borrowed from Kabuki. I'm down with the criticism of Memoirs of a Geisha, because that was patronising tripe. But watch a bit of Kurosawa, or even Tarantino - it's all there.
All actors in the play are men, and there is a global history of men also playing female actors.
It allows them to take a step into a woman's shoes, and take the experience. And it is possible on stage. It allows them to act out the elegance of the feminine side from their perspective.
The earliest groups were made up mainly of women performers or adolescent boys but the boundaries between prostitution and theatre became too cloudy and they were outlawed, so only adult males could perform Kabuki theatre
It wasn't so much about the differences between theatre and prostitution. The all male kabuki involved prostitution as well. It was more for a fear of the idea that women playing the roles of men might want to actually take on those roles in reality.
I also had a very similar impression as yours before I saw the Onnagata (actor imitating feminine role) , Onoe Baikou playing Wisteria lady on the stage. But I found the Onnagata was more erotic and elegant than any beautiful actress playng the same dance. The actress cannot act as if a female, bit simply is a female naturally whearas the Onnagata can imitate and play the role of an idealized female from the standpoint of a male.
I love this, but the only trouble with it is that traditionally they can only have male actors, meaning these people in these kimonos are all men. Not to say that's a detraction in the artistic sense, mind you. That was the tradition in europe until quite recently too. All the female roles in Shakespear's plays were played by men, after all.
I wish there was more Japanese entertainment here in England, I find it so beautiful, but there are no theatres or dance schools I know of where I could either see or learn traditional Japanese entertainment. How sad it is to be a small town girl in the middle of England!
kabuki is a family business. as in, you are born into it. thats why you wont find it anywhere else. plus most westerners couldnt sit through a 4.5 hour play.
Per kabuki21DOTcom website, "The "Heron Maiden" was a role performed by the star Segawa Kikunojô II in a 5-role hengemono, which was staged under the title "Yanagi Hina Shochô no Saezuri" in April 1762 at the Ichimuraza. This role was revived several times, under different forms, by actors like Nakamura Utaemon IV, who performed it in November 1839 at the Nakamuraza. The current version is based on the performance done by Ichikawa Danjûrô IX in May 1886 at the Shintomiza."
@Qandisha You're right. Mr. Marshall blatantly copied Sagi Musume for the "Miyako Odori" scene in Memoirs of a Geisha. It was epically lame...I do wonder if he ever figured out the "chick" in this is a dude. -_____- A very well respected and highly esteemed actor, at that!
Men play women's roles in kabuki because in the Edo period, when Kabuki became very popular, women also functioned as prostitues offstage, and so became banned from performing since males often saught after them, and caused scenes at theaters ect. The ban was eventually lifted a long time after, but men became essential to the women's roles and so it continued that way.
If that were the case and women are not forbidden to enter into kabuki today, have there been any women who have been kabuki actresses in recent years?
It depends of the roles. There are some actors trained as tachiyaku (male roles) or onnagata (female roles) it depends of how they were trained; there are some who specialize in old ladies or girls of town, spirits, bad men or heroes
Could someone get me the lyrics to the song? Yes this sounds weird, but I would like to have it. I'm trying to right it down while it is being sung, but that is making slow progress.
just to let you know, that woman is a man. Kabuki is played but men only.... and as for the kimono just try to find an asian store or go to a clothes maker kimono are fairly easy to make and as for the obi just try to find a website to learn how to tie it.....
Yes, I'd wanted to buy the DVD from 'amazon dot jp', but it's to expensive... Nearly € 70.- half for the DVD (which is ok from my opinion), but the other half goes to EU tolls...
always loved the male actors playing women

It's a shame they are not using an traditional Oriental, and by that I mean specifically Japanese music scale. This one is too westernized.

What are you talking about? It's in the same scale it's always been in. Don't say things just to make yourself sound smart.
