I know... I saw another idiot the other day who lost control coming down hill as they couldn't handle a bike without the ability to brake effectively or coast. Obviously they'd just bought into the hipster 'thing' and never paid much attention to where they needed to ride it. They're OK for pissing about on or if you live somewhere like Holland (i.e. Flat with a capital F), but not much fun anywhere else. Gears, brakes and freewheel were innovation... simply put. The fad will die.

@LIGHTRONIX coasting and shifting is chill....but it makes the expeerience feel like your riding a machine with gears.... the sizzling noize a regular coasting bike makes the experience fake. BORING

fixed gears however make you feel like your one with the bike.......wherever ur feet moves, the bike moves, ur more in controll, if u wanna go up a hill, u have to work for it FUN

fixed gears are a more fun and fullfilling experience just by riding it

tricks are just the icing on the cake :)

a smaller gear ratio is indeed more sufficient for tricks than a larger one. but consider the act of "getting" to where you trick, if its a good mile or two of hills, your legs will be burnt out from the excessive pedaling

A flipflop hub solves that problem. I ride 46/16 and flip to 46/19 for bike polo and tricks.

With a flipflop hub you can have a different cog on each side of the wheel, so you can "shift gears" by flipping the wheel. Note there are two different types of flipflops: fixed/free and fixed/fixed. You can mount a freewheel cassette on each one of them, but you can't mount two fixed cogs on a fixed/free hub.

Track/fixed gear bicycles have a very long history seeing as it's the simplest form of the bicycle. asians have not been doing it longer, just because the fad of having a fixie originated from the asian culture does not mean that people in america haven't been riding these for a longer period of time.
