I may have said it before, because i have been watching this video for 3 years, but this is THE BEST thing on YouTube. This was always one of my favorite tunes from my extensive collection of dead music, and i could not believe it when I found a video recording of it about 3 years ago. Thank you, rhcoopah.
One of the latter day Jerry/Hunter greats...just a few chords but he made it his own. I'm sure Bob didn't mind that the whole S M R chorus is a twin of the chorus of Kockin' on Heaven's Door.
@BladeofGrassMusic 10/1/94 Boston Gardens, He was wailing allnight long. Fire and the Stella Blue he's yelling praticlly. That fall tour I started to feel something wasn't right. It was like his fingers were not doing what the music was telling them to do. So he took that energy and It came out in his vocals.
Maybe one of those puppies really is yer son. I mean the dreads, the bo. the starry eyes.... the possibilities are endless. FInd a road and make it yours - some have white lines some have yellow lines and some have no sidewalks at all some have white lights, some have orange lights; rich with traffic light; poor with gas light a little bit of GD today and little bit of GD tonight' how do they decide wher to place those signs when you dotted your lines and pushed pedestrian buttons..
The pure emotion of Jerry and the heartfelt lyrics bring this night full circle...it had it all, from the opening,Help>Slip>Frank to SMR`s to Scarlet>Fire,Terrapin and Stella Blue..all of which surrpass the limits of joy that they bring!..I sat Phil-side,and danced an empty row up high, and solidly made a spot in my heart for Boston that Oct.1`94.
@JJETTE7 check out 9.18.94; as good as 10.1 is; the vocals and towering crescendo at the end of 9.18 easily beats it!!! it's slower pace of the song, but really builds. i was lucky enough to be front row dead center at shoreline that night thanks to GD ticketing!

Out of the 27 shows I saw,and out of the handful that contained this tune.I must say..this rendition is the most heartfelt and soulful of them all.Jerry performs with a passion during this, that I had never witnessed before. It was magical! It`s also a one of a kind version.Jer swapped,"EASE,"With,"HEAL,"and that alone...makes this one, hard to top!Jerry looks to be sining,as if he had written this ballad about his own"struggles"
Every time I hear Jerry play (sing) this song, I get butterflies inside, my head gets that rush that happens just before tears well up in my eyes & yes the tears come. Fuck do I miss Jerry so so so much. I'm a hopeless fan...
This is by far my favorite version of this song...of course, when I say "this song", what I mean is the repeated refrain at the end(ditto SOTM). Many Heads point to 9/18/94, and I understand why, but Jerry's vocal in this version (10/1/94) is simply astonishing in its strength and conviction. I've heard it a few hundred times, and I'm still blown away. The section from 5:43 through 6:15 is the most moving singing I've ever heard from ANYONE! EVER! His voice is what can never be replaced.
@BillyDaMountain Yo - check out the "So Many Roads" from 6/23/92 Starlake sometime. Another incredible Jerry vocal. 10/1/94 is great, too, but I like 6/23/92 better.
@btrhea1 jus' checked it out...damn!...another stunning, unique, inspiring, and moving gut-punch of a vocal outro...many thanx, my friend...I hadn't heard that one. The variations between different versions of this song's outro are fascinating. Amazing how the Starlake version was just weeks before his illness...and still so powerful. RIP JG
@BillyDaMountain I never got to see them until 7/29/94 Buckeye Lake... but then went crazy for them. Saw the final 3 Shoreline shows (Gyuoto Monks!), among my 12 total. Good times! We're the same age, by the way. Ha!
In the process of digitizing my GD tape collection. Just the other day I was listening to the last dead show. This song makes the hair on my arms stand up. Especially thinking of this song in the last show and playing the moment over in my head of Jerry throwing his fist up in the air! Just got the chills again!
Oh my,how he "healed my soul."I love how Jerry twisted the words and put "healed"in place of "ease."Had to be a method of reasoning behind such lyrics,he knew what he was saying. And the way he yells it out to us,with such heart....he healed alot of souls that walked the roads wherever the Grateful Dead traveled.
It's always interesting to see such outpouring of love and affection for Jerry Garcia. It has always been that way with Jerry, he was just that kind of guy.
r.i.p. mike smart we all know u had so many roads teased ur soul ,,,,,,wow can any1 see this in 69 or 76???? ya thought so ..post jers last smr or boston 94 2ed best vers to 95
Listen to the song. From 5:00 on he is singing "So many roads to heal my soul" not ease. Written lyrics are one thing but what he is saying is another.
i feel like the immense amount of love and good energy jerry (and people like him) put out into the world helped (and help) to balance out the bad energy like greed and fear, that is obviously very present in our daily, societal lives. thats why me and my fellow deadheads miss him so much; we miss this energy he put out into the world.

Definitely one of the top 3 versions of this masterpiece. It's a tight version with few miscues and the vocal finale is just sick. Musically and emotionally tip top. So much soul.
Oh man, what great footage of THE man!! His voice is just full of emotion, and love, and he makes you feel it. Shed a tear for jerry, he truely made the world a better place.

I'm pretty sure this was from 10/1/94. It was one of the greatest moments of my musical life. The passion and energy Jerry puts in this version is amazing. RIP, Jerry. I still miss your ass...
What a treat to see this. This night was amazing and warrants a cd/dvd release if those folks at Rhino get their act together. When will they post more from this night? (((((((Stella Blue)))))))
This song only gets better as time passes. From living in Colorado in the mid 90's when I'd drive 500 miles on a day-long road trip (over bluebird hill near Divide, CO) to driving countless miles where I now live Alaska (in the land of midnight sun where the ice-blue roses grow) this song is always on hand and only becomes more powerful to me over time. Thanks, Jerry.
this has always been one of my favorite renderings of SMRoads! Thankyou for the post...other than the one in Albany95 i witnessed, this one is wicked clear and REAL! GodBless! Pete
I've was born in 82. I'm sorry to say i've never been to a concert but my parents have. I just got sirius radio in my car for my birthday and I have to say listening to all the live music on the Grateful dead channel is awesome. I think some of their best music was done live.
I was at this show, we stayed at a friends dorm room in Boston proper, still dont think he and roomies knew what was going on. one of the best times ever had, 10-01-94. tear down the boston garden the next night rocked too.....if I had my way....I would tear this ol' building down....
It is amazing to me to see young people (who were born after Jerry's passing) into the Grateful Dead. I think it is wonderful. I saw Jerry over 100 times. With the Grateful Dead and solo. I will share one vivid memory: I remember crying my eyes out listing to Jerry play the solo to Row Jimmy in 1990. The Dead were truly magical. That magic will never die. I am eternally Grateful.
i am 15 years old and the only dead concert i saw was in 93 when i was 5 weeks old and when i watch this i just cant beleive i missed out on jerrys life. i wish i could remember
This is from 10/1/94 and easily the best version I have ever heard. Listen closely... this is the first version where Jerry croons 'So Many Roads to HEAL my soul...' The energy in the Garden was INSANE!!!
This is one of my favorite songs that Jerry did during the last few years of his life. Some versions are unbelievable. This one is ok, not great. Try getting a hold of the Atlanta Omni 1993 version. Classic
Check out the 6-26-94 version..a little cleaner. This one is more passionate. You can really feel for Jerry. He knew the end of his life was near..i've listened to countless hours of the dead and this tune was chilling to say the least..RIP Jerry!
I may have said it before, because i have been watching this video for 3 years, but this is THE BEST thing on YouTube. Now this is a truly EPIC version of this song. Possibly the best ending I've ever heard/seen. Thank you so much for posting.

Amazing vocal climax. Reminds me of the '94 versions of Stella Blue from Auburn Hills and Richfield... amazing stuff!

This is from 10/1/94 and easily the best version I have ever heard. Listen closely... this is the first version where Jerry croons 'So Many Roads to HEAL my soul...' The energy in the Garden was INSANE!!!

Good version.

This is one of my favorite songs that Jerry did during the last few years of his life. Some versions are unbelievable. This one is ok, not great. Try getting a hold of the Atlanta Omni 1993 version. Classic

Ok, not great? WTF are you on?
This is the best SMR. Jer is practically howling at the end there, it's fuckin' awesome.

Check out the 6-26-94 version..a little cleaner. This one is more passionate. You can really feel for Jerry. He knew the end of his life was near..i've listened to countless hours of the dead and this tune was chilling to say the least..RIP Jerry!
