He was given a chance to see what would've happened if he hadn't been crushed by the Jet engine. Basically if he'd survived someone else would of had to take his place. Thats why he's sitting on the bed at the end laughing, Because he knows if he dies he'll save gretchen ,so he accepts his fate.

Donnie Darko was amazing, one of the best films of the last 10 years. And yet it's been followed up by the most pointless, gutless, shit sequel ever to come out of hollywood.
None of the actors are the same, the director isn't the same and neither is the writer. In fact, I reckon it shouldn't even be able to claim itself as a sequel.
