Duncan is definitely more fundamentally sound. NO ONE would deny that. He's just not as effective as Shaq is in absolute terms. I'd guess that most coaches/analysts would take Shaq 100 times over before Duncan. If someone said, "I'm trying to put together a structurally perfect basketball team" Duncan's your guy. If they said, "Let's just win every game" THEN, you can't beat Shaq. Kobe, on the other hand would fit on both teams. Lebron, would be on the team with Shaq. That makes Kobe's case IMO.
day in and day out Duncan is a 20 10 guy for life. (points and rebounds) you'd be lucky to get 20 nd 10 from shaq these days. i love shaq but he's getting old and his percentages will continue to decrease as long as he keeps dragging on his career. jordan learned that the hard way.

I see where you're coming from but when it comes to the elite players, "effectiveness" isn't a good way of judging because they're all effective. If it were based on effectiveness, Shaq WOULD be the greatest player of all-time. With top players, basic, timeless skills have to be taken into consideration. Lebron is effective and he's talented. He's just not in Kobe Bryant's class as far as fundamental skills and the ability to parlay those into more flashy solutions to every defensive scheme go.
Neither KB or LJ is my favorite player but I can say, no question that Lebrons not close. He's not.....He's strong and fast. He jumps as high as anyone in the NBA. His jumpshot has come a long way. His freethrows.....are coming along. He's just not as good as Kobe Bryant. Watch Kobe play. The variety of moves indicates that he has almost mastered the offensive end of the court. He's not the master that MJ was but he's RIGHT THERE. Lebron's very effective but he's not nearly as talented as Kobe.

lebron is definately the runner up person in the nba, but i say kobe is 1 no doubt. Wade also looks even to lebron. but kobes view of the court and his all around talent of the game is magnificent. He had a game with cavs this season while he was sick, knocked 3 fades in lebrons face. By all around magnificent game i mean like Kobe is wonderful at any position of the court. I agree 100%. Kobe is better than James....Analysts (both professional and fan) are too quick to jump ships. Two years ago, Kobe was the better player and then last year, when his team was doing well, all of a sudden Lebron was said to be better than Kobe. Then his team got eliminated and now Kobe's better again. Kobe has ALWAYS been better. He's just too technically sound to be compared to Lebron James. Kobe's a great talent, top 20 all-time. But his PER numbers aren't anywhere near as high as LeBron or Wade. Kobe's never shot as high as Wade or LeBron. He's an average shooter who use to take tons of shot. Last year was his most efficient season. He's on the decline, but he'll still win a chip. The Lakers are monsters this year

So would I. Dwyane is GREAT in today's league but Kobe Bryant is just better. The only X-factor is when Kobe will start to slow down. Hopefully, it's no time soon. When he, Iverson and Shaq leave the NBA, then just about everyone who I grew up watching will be gone. The NBA is just tough to get excited about because there's so much hype and not enough attention paid to really good basketball anymore. Michael Jordan changed everything. Everyone's just looking for the next guy to put on a poster.

Yeah.....I expect the NBA to end up like pro-wrestling: just plain boring. Once you hit the point where someone is legitimately considered "the best EVER" the way that Michael Jordan is, it's bound to be mainly down-hill from there. No one will ever live up to Michael Jordan, no matter how good he/she is and so everyone after him will be, at best, second best. You can never get that type of excitement back. Like I said, they need to put the emphasis back onto the game and not the players.
