If I had been at that camp as a teenager, I have to admit I probably would have been ended up with the bunkhouse with the "bedwetters", because I sucked at sports and my social skills were almost non-existent.

This is like the original Breakfast Club. Coming of age films were rare in the 70s compared to the 80s. especially with R rated content. Ode to Billy Joe is one of the few others i can think of.
i saw this at summer camp around 1972. the theme song has been stuck in my brain for nearly 40 years since then. seeing these clips was amazing. i actually hated the summer camp itself, so seeing movies like this was real escape. looking it now it was really interesting to pick out Will Robinson from Lost in Space and Bruce Glover, father of actor Crispin Glover, as one of the owners of the hijacked Jeep. Glover played an awesome bit part in the james bond film diamonds are forever from ca. 1971
I saw this in 1977 at school and it really left an impression on me. I was lucky to rip a copy from a library VHS, but I would still love to have it on DVD. Beautiful music, too. I think I read somewhere that Bob Kramer, who played Lally 1 was actually 32-33 years old! Any truth?
It was misposted on imdb that Bob was that old --and DEAD--, but then they fixed that. No, actually Bob was about 17 or 18 when he made this movie. On the imdb site, go to the BB&C listing, scan the cast listing for Bob Kramer and go into his board--somebody wrote in that they knew him personally while in high school.
Try Ebay or Amazon; they may have a copy or two available in vhs format. Meanwhile, the whole world is waiting for this movie to be released on dvd--if you see one on dvd, chances are it's illegal, as this movie hasn't been officially released in dvd format.
I read the Glendon Swarthout novel and confused by the ending only to be shocked seeing it in the theater. Seeing Bill Mumy play a long hair after watching him on Lost In Space was also a shock. This entire film made me sad at the time and the Carpenters theme song certainly didn't help. I liked the film but was also haunted by it. I also remember on both the Academy Awards and the Grammys the song lost to Shaft.
Stanley Kramer's goal was to make this film as "shocking" as possible, and I guess having Cotton being shot really stunned the audiences more than having him drive over a cliff. The movie's message is loud and clear: if people get an opportunity to do something extreme, like killing buffalo, then they would do anything to achieve that goal--including eliminating a troublesome group of teenagers that may put a damper on their plans. It stunned me, I tell you!
I saw this movie a couple of times in the theater with my older brother and two sisters. It's funny seeing this after all this time and noticing that it looks like a cross between the Bad News Bears on acid and studio produced sitcoms. I remember the Cotton character and the journey to free the buffalo. As a 9 year old, the "gonna go blind" scene was hysterical, the Bill Mumy scene shooting a rifle was empowering, and Cotton's death was jolting.
"Jeasus Christ, you kids want to go blind"! LOL! I was just a little kid when I saw this I didn't understand what they where doing and why he said that to them! LOL! I loved this movie, thanks for posting.
I love this movie. I use to watch it when I was younger and couldnt get enough of it. My mom sold the movie and now I wish I still had it. this movie was so good. I hope it comes out on dvd soon. I am soo gonna buy it when it does, if it does.
BC! BC!! All the candy is gone! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!!! Well, the west ain't big enough for us westerners! Killers! Murderers! Move! You dumb pigs, MOVE!! They's just dumb animals!! Say "Church on fire". Dig our backs, man! Travel, or you'll be wearing earrings! If I was so angry with someone, I wouldn't kill myself, I'd kill THEM! Come on, Wheaties, it's stereo! This side goes OOMP, and this side goes PAH! You could shove it up your own anal oriface!
This is pretty cool! I saw this movie thirty years ago this month! It's hard to believe that it's been three whole decades since I've been introduced to Stanley Kramer's version of the Bedwetters! This video ROCKS!!!!
This is a heart breaking movie. Sadly underrated. I wondered what happened to Barry Robins after seeing this and found out. Death from Aids.
